A COMPACT model reduction methodology for articulated, multi-flexible bodies structures

To simulate the dynamical motion of articulated, multiflexible body structures, one can use multibody simulation packages such as DISCOS. To this end, one need appropriate reduced-order models for all the flexible components involved. The component modes projection and assembly model reduction methodology is one way to construct these reduced-order component models. However, the generated reduced-order system models typically contain high frequency extraneous modes. The presence of high frequency extraneous modes in a reduced-order system model forces us to use a small stepsize in the numerical integration of that model, resulting in an increase in the elapsed time of the integration process. To eliminate these high-frequency modes, we first identify and discard the component modes that 'contributed' to the generations of these modes. A sensitivity analysis is then used to determine how the remaining component modes should be perturbed in order to still closely capture the selected system modes. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology has been successfully verified using a finite-element model of the Galileo spacecraft.

Component modes damping assignment methodology for articulated, multiflexible body structures

To simulate the dynamical motion of articulated, multiflexible body structures, one can use multibody simulation packages such as DISCOS. To this end, one must supply appropriate reduced-order models for all of the flexible components involved. The component modes projection and assembly model reduction (COMPARE) methodology is one way to construct these reduced-order component models, which when reassembled capture important system input-to-output mapping of the full-order model at multiple system configurations of interest. In conjunction, we must also supply component damping matrices which when reassembled generate a system damping matrix that has certain desirable properties. The problem of determining the damping factors of components' modes to achieve a given system damping matrix is addressed here. To this end, we must establish from first principles a matrix-algebraic relation between the system's modal damping matrix and the components' modal damping matrices. An unconstrained/constrained optimization problem can then be formulated to determine the component modes' damping factors that best satisfy that matrix-algebraic relation. The effectiveness of the developed methodology, called ModeDamp, has been successfully demonstrated on a high-order, finite element model of the Galileo spacecraft.

Long-Term Properties of Accretion Discs in X-ray Binaries: The Variable Third Period in SMC X-1 - 1

Long term X-ray monitoring data from the RXTE All Sky Monitor (ASM) reveal that the third (superorbital) period in SMC X-1 is not constant but varies between 40-60 days. A dynamic power spectrum analysis indicates that the third period has been present continuously throughout the five years of ASM observations. This period changed smoothly from 60 days to 45 days and then returned to its former value, on a timescale of approximately 1600 days. During the nearly 4 years of overlap between the CGRO & RXTE missions, the simultaneous BATSE hard X-ray data confirm this variation in SMC X-1. Sources of systematic error and possible artefacts are investigated and found to be incapable of reproducing the results reported here. Our disco cry of such an instability in the superorbital period of SMC X-1 is interpreted in the context of recent theoretical studies of warped, precessing accretion discs. We find that the behaviour of SMC X-1 is consistent with a radiation - driven warping model.

Forensic Analysis of SOHO Router Binaries

Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) routers are used by millions of consumers across the United States, and are commensurately vulnerable. Forensic analysis of SOHO router firmware helps to understand and mitigate those vulnerabilities. This poster focused particularly on analysis of BusyBox executables, a software suite that provides several Unix utilities in a single file. Three main tools were used to analyze the binaries. BinWalk was used to extract the files, but also to build entropy graphs, extract Linux kernel images, and identify CPU architectures; WiiBin processed the binaries to find endianness, architecture, the percent compressed/encrypted, and compiler data; and @DisCo, a machine learning tool used to determine function similarity in disassembled binaries, analyzed similarities and determined versions of extracted BusyBox files from each router. These tools found that venders from all five routers utilized the same version of the BusyBox software across different firmware updates, demonstrating the importance of constant firmware scrutiny to protect against security vulnerabilities.

Intern Poster: STIG Shouldn't Drop ACID

STIG (Structured Threat Intelligence Graph) is an open-source graph database tool from INL. It’s used to create and process cyber intelligence graphs, which are shared in the cyber threat intelligence community and used to train INL machine learning products like @DisCo. For quality machine learning and critical infrastructure defense, STIG’s database must be ACID: Atomic, Consistent, Isolated, Durable. Various ACID tests were designed and applied to STIG to ensure its behavior follows these properties.
