Multiplexed noise shaping structures for Delta-Sigma modulators

A new structure for realizing a multiplexed noise-shaping A/D convertor is proposed. It improves the performance of first- or second-order Delta-Sigma modulators by employing additional feedback paths for suppressing the quantizer error. The structure, its theoretical analysis, and simulations confirming the improved resolution are presented.

Entropy encoding applied to a video DM bit stream

This paper investigates bandwidth compression of delta modulated video signals using a variety of novel techniques. The video signal is encoded at 16 MHz with an adaptive delta modulator (ADM) using the Song video mode algorithm. One method of achieving bandwidth compression is through the detection and reduction of steady state patterns in the DM bit stream. Further reduction is obtained by deleting the horizontal and vertical drive information. Finally, a modified ADM algorithm is introduced to increase the frequency of steady state patterns. When the modified ADM is combined with entropy coding a 30-50% data compression can be realized.

A digital audio/video interleaving system

A method of interleaving an audio signal with its associated video signal for simultaneous transmission or recording, and the subsequent separation of the two signals, is described. Comparisons are made between the new audio signal interleaving system and the Skylab Pam audio/video interleaving system, pointing out improvements gained by using the digital audio/video interleaving system. It was found that the digital technique is the simplest, most effective and most reliable method for interleaving audio and/or other types of data into the video signal for the Shuttle Orbiter application. Details of the design of a multiplexer capable of accommodating two basic data channels, each consisting of a single 31.5-kb/s digital bit stream are given. An adaptive slope delta modulation system is introduced to digitize audio signals, producing a high immunity of work intelligibility to channel errors, primarily due to the robust nature of the delta-modulation algorithm.

Multifunction audio digitizer

An illustrative embodiment of the invention includes apparatus which simultaneously produces both direct delta modulation and pulse code modulation. An input signal, after amplification, is supplied to a window comparator which supplies a polarity control signal to gate the output of a clock to the appropriate input of a binary up-down counter. The control signals provide direct delta modulation while the up-down counter output provides pulse code modulation.

Non-parametric PCM to ADM conversion

An all-digital technique to convert pulse code modulated (PCM) signals into adaptive delta modulation (ADM) format is presented. The converter developed is shown to be independent of the statistical parameters of the encoded signal and can be constructed with only standard digital hardware. The structure of the converter is simple enough to be fabricated on a large scale integrated circuit where the advantages of reliability and cost can be optimized. A concise evaluation of this PCM to ADM translation technique is presented and several converters are simulated on a digital computer. A family of performance curves is given which displays the signal-to-noise ratio for sinusoidal test signals subjected to the conversion process, as a function of input signal power for several ratios of ADM rate to Nyquist rate.

Methods and Devices for Modifying Active Paths in a K-Delta-1-Sigma Modulator

The invention relates to an improved K-Delta-1-Sigma Modulators (KG1Ss) that achieve multi GHz sampling rates with 90 nm and 45 nm CMOS processes, and that provide the capability to balance performance with power in many applications. The improved KD1Ss activate all paths when high performance is needed (e.g. high bandwidth), and reduce the effective bandwidth by shutting down multiple paths when low performance is required. The improved KD1Ss can adjust the baseband filtering for lower bandwidth, and can provide large savings in power consumption while maintaining the communication link, which is a great advantage in space communications. The improved KD1Ss herein provides a receiver that adjusts to accommodate a higher rate when a packet is received at a low bandwidth, and at a initial lower rate, power is saved by turning off paths in the KD1S Analog to Digital Converter, and where when a higher rate is required, multiple paths are enabled in the KD1S to accommodate the higher band widths.

Field oriented control of an induction machine in a high frequency link power system

A field-oriented controlled induction machine drive operating with a high-frequency single-phase sinusoidal voltage link is presented. System performance is investigated by computer simulation and is verified by a test on a prototype system. A novel control loop to minimize the link voltage fluctuation is proposed. The capability of rapid demagnetization of the induction machine by current regulation is investigated. A current-modulation technique termed mode control is proposed, and its performance is compared with that of the conventional delta-modulation technique.

A study of FM threshold extension techniques

The characteristics of three postdetection threshold extension techniques are evaluated with respect to the ability of such techniques to improve the performance of a phase lock loop demodulator. These techniques include impulse-noise elimination, signal correlation for the detection of impulse noise, and delta modulation signal processing. Experimental results from signal to noise ratio data and bit error rate data indicate that a 2- to 3-decibel threshold extension is readily achievable by using the various techniques. This threshold improvement is in addition to the threshold extension that is usually achieved through the use of a phase lock loop demodulator.

Dynamic testing of a single-degree-of-freedom strapdown gyroscope

Test methods and results are presented for the equivalent average input rate of a single-degree-of-freedom gyroscope operated both open loop and with a ternary-logic pulse-torque-to-balance loop during multiaxis angular oscillation. For the open-loop tests, good agreement was obtained with theoretical results. Two-axis testing was performed for oscillations about the Input-Output axes, the Input-Spin axes, and the Spin-Output axes. These tests run in the torque-to-balance mode revealed significant departures from open-loop results in the induced drift rate. An analysis is developed explaining much of the closed-loop data presented. Test data for the gryoscope in a ternary torque-to-balance loop with constant input rates is presented. The tests demonstrate that the instrument rate linearity does not change with interrogation frequency from 3,600 to 14,400 Hz if the torque coil is tuned to offer a resistive load to the current switch. Analysis cited shows that gyroscope lag compensation eliminates multiple pulsing and other equivalent forms of degraded resolution in a wide variety of quantizing loops. This result is test verified for the ternary delta-modulator loop.

A TDM link with channel coding and digital voice.

The features of a TDM (time-division multiplexed) link model are described. A PCM telemetry sequence was coded for error correction and multiplexed with a digitized voice channel. An all-digital implementation of a variable-slope delta modulation algorithm was used to digitize the voice channel. The results of extensive testing are reported. The measured coding gain and the system performance over a Gaussian channel are compared with theoretical predictions and computer simulations. Word intelligibility scores are reported as a measure of voice channel performance.

A digital communications system for manned spaceflight applications.

A highly efficient, all-digital communications signal design employing convolutional coding and PN spectrum spreading is described for two-way transmission of voice and data between a manned spacecraft and ground. Variable-slope delta modulation is selected for analog/digital conversion of the voice signal, and a convolutional decoder utilizing the Viterbi decoding algorithm is selected for use at each receiving terminal. A PN spread spectrum technique is implemented to protect against multipath effects and to reduce the energy density (per unit bandwidth) impinging on the earth's surface to a value within the guidelines adopted by international agreement. Performance predictions are presented for transmission via a TDRS (tracking and data relay satellite) system and for direct transmission between the spacecraft and earth. Hardware estimates are provided for a flight-qualified communications system employing the coded digital signal design.
