Residents-as-Teachers Curriculum for Radiation Oncology: A Targeted Needs Assessment

Achieving competency as educators is increasingly recognized as a critical part of residents’ training in graduate medical education across specialties. In addition to teaching medical students, radiation oncology residents often play a vital role in peer and interprofessional education. We conducted a survey to identify the needs of radiation oncology residents for developing skills in teaching.

BLDAP Intro to Python/Data Science Curriculum v1

The Github repository contains the Jupyter notebooks for the intro to Python / Data Science course for Berkeley Lab Director's Apprenticeship Program (BLDAP). This course is designed for students with little to no experience in coding to learn skills in Python necessary for data science. Students utilize Jupyter notebooks throughout the course. The overall goal is for students to learn how to use Python to clean, analyze, and visualize large data sets in order to communicate effectively their conclusions about the data set. Students apply the skills they learned on actual data sets provided by researchers in Berkeley Lab.

A core lighting curriculum for university students and lighting professionals

Here, in collaboration with a group of lighting professionals, learning outcomes were defined, prioritized, organized and mapped to a three-course sequence of lighting courses within a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering degree programme. Syllabi and educational exercises were developed to support the learning outcomes – including classroom activities, homework assignments and design projects. The learning exercises balance the technical foundations of applied illuminating engineering with the artistic aspects of applied lighting design and are intended to promote significant and lasting learning by providing students with education that is useful and relevant to current lighting practice. The process for identifying and prioritizing lighting content is described, a process that could be adapted by other lighting educators to other pedagogical contexts. The syllabi and learning exercises are disseminated for reuse or adaptation, or for self-study by independent learners.

Myco-Ed: Mycological curriculum for education and discovery

Fungi are important and hyperdiverse organisms, yet chronically understudied. Most fungal clades have no reference genomes, impeding our understanding of their ecosystem functions and use as solutions in health and biotechnology. Also, opportunities for training in fungal biology and genomics are lacking, creating a bottleneck that hinders the recruitment and cultivation of a talented future mycological workforce. To address these issues, we developed Myco-Ed, an educational program offering training and scientific contributions through genome sequencing and analysis. Myco-Ed empowers students to pursue careers in fungal biology while improving fungal resources. Myco-Ed has been piloted at 12 institutions (15 classrooms) ranging from online e-Campuses to R1 universities, resulting in hundreds of fungal observations and many new high-quality reference genomes.

MESA-Web: A cloud resource for stellar evolution in astronomy curriculum

Here, we present MESA-Web,a cloud resource with an online interface to the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) software instrument. MESA-Web allows learners to evolve stellar models without the need to download and install MESA. Since being released in 2015, MESA-Web has delivered over 17,000 calculations to over 2,200 unique learners and currently performs about 11 jobs per day. MESA-Web can be used as an educational tool for stars in the classroom or for scientific investigations. We report on new capabilities of MESA-Web introduced since its 2015 release including learner-supplied nuclear reaction rates, custom stopping conditions, and an expanded selection of input parameters. To foster collaboration we have created a Zenodo MESA-Web community hub, where instructors can openly share examples of using MESA-Web in the classroom. We discuss two examples in the current community hub. The first example is a lesson module on Red Giant Branch stars that includes a suite of exercises designed to fit a range of learners and a Jupyter workbook for additional analysis. The second example is lesson materials for an upper-level Astronomy majors course in Stars and Radiation that includes an assignment verifying some of the expected trends that are presented in a popular stellar physics textbook.

Sustainable Development in Basic Education Sciences in Portugal—Perspective of Official Curriculum Documents

This study aims to identify and characterize the understanding of the concept of Sustainable Development in the official scientific educational documents of basic education in Portugal. Methodologically, it is a qualitative study that fits into the interpretive paradigm; its implementation is based on an interpretative-descriptive strategy of exploratory nature. The study involved the organization of the analysis corpus and the subsequent content analysis of the selected documents. The documents included in this corpus are the official educational documents on the teaching and learning of Natural Sciences in Basic Education (1st to 9th grade—ages 6 to 15): the Essential Learning and two transversal documents (the Student Profile on Leaving Compulsory Schooling and the Environmental Education Framework for Sustainability). The obtained results show that these documents frame and guide the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development, in all its dimensions, throughout basic education. However, this does not happen in an equitable way, neither in all documents nor in all years of schooling.

A Hands-On Curriculum for Training in HPC Cluster Deployment and Management

This paper presents the design, methodology, and outcomes of the High-Performance Computing Technologies (HPCT) course, a hands-on training program focused on the system-side of HPC cluster deployment and administration. Delivered as part of the Master in High Performance Computing (MHPC) program, the course introduces students to key concepts in cluster configuration, including networking, software stack provisioning, job scheduling, and monitoring. Initially taught in person, the course was transitioned to an online format during the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift led to the development of openly available instructional material and a flipped-classroom approach that continues to support both in-person and hybrid delivery. All course materials are publicly available at www.hpc.temple.edu/mhpc/hpc-technology/index.html. By documenting the structure, infrastructure, and evolution of HPCT, this paper offers a model for accessible HPC system training that supports workforce development in computational science.

Curriculum for modern aeronautics

Methods for improving the university training of aeronautical engineering students are discussed. Specific topics considered are: (1) the kind of students which should be developed through aeronautical engineering education, (2) to what extent should aerospace engineering be prepared for diversity and change, (3) to what extent should theory be emphasized as compared with practical engineering and design, and (4) a suggestion for NASA/Industry/University collaboration.

College curriculum-sharing via CTS

Domestic communication satellites and video compression techniques will increase communication channel capacity and reduce cost of video transmission. NASA Ames Research Center, Stanford University and Carleton University are participants in an experiment to develop, demonstrate, and evaluate college course sharing techniques via satellite using video compression. The universities will exchange televised seminar and lecture courses via CTS. The experiment features real-time video compression with channel coding and quadra-phase modulation for reducing transmission bandwidth and power requirements. Evaluation plans and preliminary results of Carleton surveys on student attitudes to televised teaching are presented. Policy implications for the U.S. and Canada are outlined.
