Crystal structure of perfluorononanoic acid, C 9 HF 17 O 2

The crystal structure of perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) was solved via parallel tempering using synchrotron powder diffraction data obtained from the Brockhouse X-ray Diffraction and Scattering (BXDS) Wiggler Lower Energy (WLE) beamline at the Canadian Light Source. PFNA crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2 1 /c (#14) with lattice parameters a = 26.172(1) Å, b = 5.6345(2) Å, c = 10.9501(4) Å, and β = 98.752(2)°. The crystal structure is composed of dimers, with pairs of PFNA molecules connected by hydrogen bonds via the carboxylic acid functional groups. The Rietveld-refined structure was compared to a density functional theory-optimized structure, and the root-mean-square Cartesian difference was larger than normally observed for correct powder structures. The powder data likely exhibited evidence of disorder which was not successfully modeled.

Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 : A Noncentrosymmetric Polar Crystal Structure with Disordered Trimers

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 was prepared and determined to adopt the noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure (space group Cmc2 1 ) based on results of second harmonic generation, convergent beam electron diffraction, and Rietveld refinements using powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure features zigzag chains of corner-shared trimers, which contain three distorted face-sharing octahedra. The three metal sites in the trimers are occupied by disordered Ru/Mn with three different ratios: Ru1:Mn1 = 0.202(8):0.798(8), Ru2:Mn2 = 0.27(1):0.73(1), and Ru3:Mn3 = 0.40(1):0.60(1), successfully lowering the symmetry and inducing the polar crystal structure from the centrosymmetric parent compounds Ba 4 T 3 O 10 (T = Mn, Ru; space group Cmca). The valence state of Ru/Mn is confirmed to be +4 according to X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 is a narrow bandgap (~0.6 eV) semiconductor exhibiting spin-glass behavior with strong magnetic frustration and antiferromagnetic interactions.

Crystal structure prediction with host-guided inpainting generation and foundation potentials

Unconditional crystal structure generation with diffusion models faces challenges in identifying symmetric crystals as the unit cell size increases. Here, we present the crystal host-guided generation (CHGGen) framework to address this challenge through conditional generation using an inpainting method, which optimizes a fraction of atomic positions within a predefined and symmetrized host structure to improve the success rate for symmetric structure generation. By integrating inpainting structure generation with a foundation potential for structure optimization, we demonstrate the method on the ZnS–P 2 S 5 and Li–Si chemical systems, where the inpainting method generates a higher fraction of symmetric structures than unconditional generation. The practical significance of CHGGen extends to enabling the structural modification of crystal structures, particularly for systems with partial occupancy or intercalation chemistry. The inpainting method also allows for seamless integration with other generative models, providing a versatile framework for accelerating materials discovery.

Influence of shape on crystal structure and optical properties of heterocyclic conjugated molecules

Organic optoelectronics are increasingly important due to their tunablilty, flexibility, and solution processability. Tuning optical properties of these materials as solids relies on the balance of weak non-covalent interactions that dictate crystal structure, but are difficult to predict. Our research aims to improve our understanding of how electrostatic interactions can direct and facilitate intramolecular interactions that dictate emergent properties of crystalline materials. This paper focuses on exploring how multi-fused thiophene ring systems that are popular in modern organic optoelectronic materials impact intramolecular interactions, while also investigating the role of molecular shape. In these examples, the shape of heterocyclic systems correlate with the crystal structures: while the bent heterocyclics show no discrete and discernable intramolecular interactions, those with bent shapes interact cofacially with one of the electron poor ArF pendants by twisting the arylene ethynylene backbone. Two of the control molecules, which bear non-fluorinated benzyl ester substituents, show intramolecular edge-face interactions, and several of these molecules show clear polymorphic behavior. Furthermore, these findings further our understanding of how discrete interactions can be altered not only by electrostatics, but also by shape, allowing for increasingly nuanced control over the crystal structures and optical properties of optoelectronic materials.
