Swift J045106.8-694803: A Highly Magnetised Neutron Star in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We report the analysis of a highly magnetised neutron star in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The high mass X-ray binary pulsar Swift J045106.8-694803 has been observed with Swift X-ray telescope (XRT) in 2008, The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in 2011 and the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission - Newton (XMM-Newton) in 2012. The change in spin period over these four years indicates a spin-up rate of 5.010.06 s/yr, amongst the highest observed for an accreting pulsar. This spin-up rate can be accounted for using Ghosh and Lambs (1979) accretion theory assuming it has a magnetic field of (1.2 +/= 0.20/0.7) x 10(exp 14) Gauss. This is over the quantum critical field value. There are very few accreting pulsars with such high surface magnetic fields and this is the first of which to be discovered in the LMC. The large spin-up rate is consistent with Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) observations which show that Swift J045106.8-694803 has had a consistently high X-ray luminosity for at least five years. Optical spectra have been used to classify the optical counterpart of Swift J045106.8-694803 as a B0-1 III-V star and a possible orbital period of 21.631 +/- 0.005 days has been found from MACHO optical photometry.

Magnetic studies of high Tc superconducting (La0.9Sr0.1)2CuO4-y

The magnetic moment of La(0.9Sr0.1)2CuO4-y was measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field, and the onset of superconductivity was found to occur at a temperature of 35 K. At 2 K, the dc magnetic susceptibility was found to reach 83 percent of perfect diamagnetism. Field studies have shown that the sample is a type-II superconductor and that the temperature dependences of the critical fiedls are anomalous. Its critical fields, kappa, and lambda(eff) are much larger than those for (La0.9Ba0.1)2CuO4-y, and their temperature dependences cannot be explained in terms of BCS theory.

Niobium-germanium superconducting tapes for high-field magnet applications

A process of fabricating superconducting Nb3Ge tapes by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been developed and tapes up to 10 meters long fabricated. The typical properties achieved were: critical temperature T sub c = 20 K, upper critical field H sub c2 = 29 tesla at 4.2 K, and J sub c = 3 to 4 x 10 to the 8th power A m(-2) at 4.2 K, 18 tesla. The relative depression of T sub c and H sub c2 compared with the best thin film samples sputtered on sapphire was due to the presence of Nb5Ge3 second-phase particles used as flux pinning centers and to strains induced by thermal mixmatch with Hastelloy B tape substrates. A peculiar field dependence of flux pinning force that was observed in both CVD and sputtered Nb3Ge indicated a premature pin-breaking mechanism or a phase inhomogeneity. Directions of further optimization work were defined.

Cirrus Susceptibility to Changes in Ice Nuclei: Physical Processes, Model Uncertainties, and Measurement Needs

In this talk, I will begin by discussing the physical processes that govern the competition between heterogeneous and homogeneous ice nucleation in upper tropospheric cirrus clouds. Next, I will review the current knowledge of low-temperature ice nucleation from laboratory experiments and field measurements. I will then discuss the uncertainties and deficiencies in representations of cirrus processes in global models used to estimate the climate impacts of changes in cirrus clouds. Lastly, I will review the critical field measurements needed to advance our understanding of cirrus and their susceptibility to changes in aerosol properties.

Separating the from the Imagined: Flight Research at the NACA and NASA, 1915-1998

One of the most important, but under-appreciated, aspects of the NACA/NASA mission is its aeronautical R&D efforts. Within a short time of the first flight of the Wright brothers in 1903, the United States government recognized the importance of fostering development in the new and critical field of aeronautics. NASA's predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), was chartered by Congress in 1915 specifically "to supervise and direct the scientific study of the problems of flight, with a view to their practical solution. " This became an enormously important government research and development activity for the next half century, materially enhancing the development of aeronautics 'in America. The results of the NACA's research appeared in more than 16,000 research reports of one type or another, distributed widely for the benefit of all. Many of the reports documenting R&D conducted under NACA auspices are still being used today. Since the creation of NASA in 1958, the critical R&D function has continued but is not well known. This work documents the historical R&D program of the agency by focusing on flight research.

Chemical spray pyrolysis of Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O high-T(sub c) superconductors for high-field bitter magnets

The deposition of Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O thick films by spray pyrolyzing a Ba-Ca-Cu-O precursor film and diffusing thallium into the film to form the superconducting phase is examined. This approach was taken to reduce exposure to thallium and its health and safety hazards. The Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O system was selected because it has very attractive features which make it appealing to device and manufacturing engineering. Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O will accommodate a number of superconducting phases. This attribute makes it very forgiving to stoichiometric fluctuations in the bulk and film. It has excellent thermal and chemical stability, and appears to be relatively insensitive to chemical impurities. Oxygen is tightly bound into the systems, consequently there is no orthorhombic (conductor) to tetragonal (insulator) transition which would affect a component's lifetime. More significantly, the thallium based superconductors appear to have harder magnetic properties than the other high-Tc oxide ceramics. Estimates using magnetoresistance measurements indicate that at 77 K Tl2Ba2CaCu2O10 will have an upper critical field, H(sub c2) fo 26 Tesla for applied fields parallel to the c-axis and approximately 1000 Tesla for fields oriented in the a-b plane. Results to date have shown that superconducting films can be reproducibly deposited on 100 oriented MgO substrates. One film had a zero resistance temperature of 111.5 K. Furthermore, x ray diffraction analysis of the films showed preferential c-axis orientation parallel to the plane of the substrate. These results have now made it possible to consider the manufacture of a superconducting tape wire which can be configured into a topology useful for high-field magnet designs. The research which leads to the preparation of these films and plans for further development are reviewed.

Superconductivity in d- and f- band metals; Proceedings of the Conference, University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y., October 29, 30, 1971.

High critical field measurements are discussed together with the lattice dynamics of transition metals, energy bands for transition metals and compounds, the importance of transverse acoustic phonons in A-15 superconductors, and aspects of electron-phonon coupling in transition metals. Other subjects considered include the superconductivity of Nb3Ga, the transition temperature of transition-metal superconductors, the relation of normal and superconducting properties to the electronic density of states, and questions of the superconductivity of various ternary thorium compounds. Individual items are abstracted in this issue.

High temperature superconductor NB3Ga

The discovery of superconductivity at 20.3 K in the Nb-Ga system by applying chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques to the materials preparation problem is reported. Films on ceramic substrates have been grown with superconducting onsets of up to 20.3 K. Critical fields at 4.2 K in excess of 300 kG and alpha's of 1100,000 T-A/sq cm have been obtained. The results confirm that the outstanding properties of Nb-Ga are due to an equilibrium configuration of the system, namely, the stoichiometric A-15 compound Nb3Ga, which is stable at relatively low temperatures. Practical materials preparation problems center on the codeposition of an adjacent Nb5Ga3 phase and the requirement that the deposition temperature be low. Some ternary alloys were also prepared, with part of the Ga replaced by Sn, Sb, Al, or Ge.

Chemical vapor deposition of high T sub c superconductors

The results are reported of an investigation into the synthesis and properties of high temperature superconducting materials. A chemical vapor deposition apparatus was designed and built which is suitable for the preparation of multicomponent metal films This apparatus was used to prepare a series of high T sub c A-15 structure superconducting films in the binary system Nb-Ge. The effect on T sub c of a variety of substrate materials was investigated. An extensive series of ternary alloys were also prepared. Conditions allowing the brittle high T sub c (approximately 18 K) A-15 structure superconductor Nb3A1 to be prepared in a low T sub c but ductile form were found. Some of the ways that the ductile (bcc) form can be cold worked or machined are described. Measurements of rate of transformation of cold worked bcc material to the high T sub c A-15 structure with low temperature annealing are given. Preliminary measurements indicate that this material has attractive high field critical current densities.

Velocity overshoot effect on a short-gate microwave MESFET

The device parameters of short-gate GaAs and InP FETs have been found to be dependent on the nonequilibrium velocity overshoot phenomenon. Both saturation velocity and critical field are found to be larger for shorter gates. The v-E characteristics of Pucel et al. (1975) are modified. The cutoff frequency and other parameters for GaAs, InP, and Si are given as a function of gate length and bias. The cutoff frequency of InP MESFETs with a doping density of 10 to the 17th per cu cm is only 20% higher than those of equivalent GaAs MESFETs at 300 K. Comparison with other work is also presented.

Superconductivity, cohesive energy density, and electron-atom ratio in metals

It is shown that superconductivity above 8 K occurs in alloys and metallic compounds within relatively narrow regions of cohesive energy density with a sharp peak which includes Nb3Ge, SiV3, Nb3Ga, and NbN. When cross-correlated with the electron-atom ratio, high-temperature superconductivity can be observed in only a few regions. This suggests a search for superconductors with high-transition temperatures and critical fields within these regions.

Anderson localization and the theory of dirty superconductors

A study is made of the effect of Anderson localization in dirty superconductors. The scale dependence of the diffusion in the vicinity of the mobility edge results in a strong renormalization of the zero-temperature coherence length. This implies the breakdown of the Ginzburg criterion close to the metal-insulator transition and thus the importance of fluctuations in this regime. The upper critical field is calculated, and possible experiments are also discussed.
