Coplanar waveguide aperture-coupled microstrip patch antenna

The performance characteristics of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) aperture-coupled microstrip patch antenna was investigated experimentally. A grounded CPW with a series gap in the center strip conductor was used to couple microwave power to the antenna through an aperture in the common ground plane. Results indicate good coupling efficiency and confirms the feasibility of this feeding technique.

Attenuation of epsilon(sub eff) of coplanar waveguide transmission lines on silicon substrates

Attenuation and epsilon(sub eff) of Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) transmission lines were measured on Silicon substrates with resistivities ranging from 400 to greater than 30,000 ohm-cm, that have a 1000 angstrom coating of SiO2. Both attenuation and epsilon(sub eff) are given over the frequency range 5 to 40 GHz for various strip and slot widths. These measured values are also compared to the theoretical values.

New Techniques for Exciting Linearly Tapered Slot Antennas with Coplanar Waveguide

Two new techniques for exciting a linearly tapered slot antenna (LTSA) with coplanar waveguide (CPW) are introduced. In the first approach, an air bridge is used to couple power from a CPW to an LTSA. In the second approach, power is electromagnetically coupled from a finite CPW (FCPW) to an LTSA. Measured results at 18 GHz show excellent return loss and radiation patterns.

A comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of coplanar waveguide shunt stubs

A comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of straight and bent coplanar waveguide (CPW) shunt stubs is presented. In the theoretical analysis, the CPW is assumed to be inside a cavity, while, the experiments are performed on open structures. A hybrid technique was developed to analyze the CPW discontinuities which proved to be accurate since the theoretical and experimental results agree very well. The effect of the cavity resonances on the behavior of the stubs with and without air-bridges is investigated. In addition, the encountered radiation loss due to the discontinuities is evaluated experimentally.

A theoretical and experimental study of coplanar waveguide shunt stubs

A comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of straight and bent coplanar waveguide (CPW) shunt stubs is presented. In the theoretical analysis, the CPW is assumed to be inside a cavity while, the experiments are performed on open structures. For the analysis of CPW discontinuities with air-bridges, a hybrid technique was developed which was validated through extensive theoretical and experimental comparisons. The effect of the cavity resonances on the behavior of the stubs with and without air-bridges is investigated. In addition, the encountered radiation loss due to the discontinuities is evaluated experimentally.

Ka-Band, MEMS Switched Line Phase Shifters Implemented in Finite Ground Coplanar Waveguide

Ka-band MEMS switched line phase shifters implemented in finite ground coplanar waveguide are described in this paper. The phase shifters are constructed of single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switches with additional reference and phase offset transmission line lengths. The one- and two-bit phase shifters are fabricated on high resistivity (HR) silicon with a dielectric constant, Epsilon(sub T) = 11.7 and a substrate thickness, t = 500microns. The switching architectures integrated within the phase shifters consist of MEMS switches that are doubly anchored cantilever beam capacitive switches with additional high inductive sections (MEMS LC device). The SPDT switch is composed of a T-junction with a MEMS LC device at each output port. The one-bit phase shifter described in this paper has an insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) of 0.9 dB and 30 dB while the two-bit described has an IL and RL of 1.8 dB and 30 dB respectively. The one-bit phase shifter's designed offset phase is 22.5deg and actual measured phase shift is 21.8deg. The two-bit phase shifter's designed offset phase is 22.5deg, 45deg, and 67.5deg and the actual measured phase shifts are 21.4deg, 44.2deg, and 65.8deg, respectively.

Slot-coupled patch antenna with coplanar waveguide feed

Two slot-coupled feeding techniques for exciting a patch antenna with a coplanar waveguide (CPW) were experimentally investigated. In the first technique, a CPW with two notches on both sides of the slot lines is used to couple power to the antenna through a narrow rectangular slot. In the second technique, a grounded CPW with a series gap in the center strip conductor is used to couple power to the antenna through a 'dumbbell' slot. Results indicated that both techniques are feasible and yield high coupling efficiency.

Folded Coplanar Waveguide Slot Antenna on Silicon Substrates With a Polyimide Interface Layer

A novel mm-wave Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) folded slot antenna is characterized on low-resistivity Si substrate (1 omega-cm) and a high resistivity Si substrate with a polyimide interface layer for the first time. The antenna resonates around 30 GHz with a return loss greater than 14.6 dB. Measured radiation patterns indicate the existence of a main lobe, but the radiation pattern is affected by a strong surface wave mode, which is greater in the high resistivity Si wafer.

Characteristics of Coplanar Waveguide on Sapphire for High Temperature Applications (25 to 400 C)

This paper presents the characteristics of coplanar waveguide transmission lines fabricated on R-plane sapphire substrates as a function of temperature across the temperature range of 25 to 400 C. Effective permittivity and attenuation are measured on a high temperature probe station. Two techniques are used to obtain the transmission line characteristics, a Thru-Reflect-Line calibration technique that yields the propagation coefficient and resonant stubs. To a first order fit of the data, the effective permittivity and the attenuation increase linearly with temperature

Temperature Dependent Performance of Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) on Substrates of Various Materials

The attenuation (a) and effective dielectric constant (E(sub eff)) of Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) transmission lines on high-resistivity silicon and diamond substrates as a function of both temperature and frequency are presented. The technique used to obtain the values for a and E(sub eff) involves the use of a unique cryogenic probe station designed and built by NASA. Attenuation of gold CPW lines on diamond substrates is compared with that of superconducting CPW lines.

Finite width coplanar waveguide patch antenna with vertical fed through interconnect

The paper presents the design, fabrication and characterization of a finite width Coplanar waveguide (FCPW) patch antenna and a FCPW-to-FCPW vertical interconnect. The experimental results demonstrate the antenna and interconnect performance. A scheme to integrate an eight element FCPW patch array with MMIC phase shifters and amplifiers using vertical interconnects is described. The antenna module has potential applications in an advanced satellite to ground transmit phased array at K-Band.
