Subleading corrections to the S 3 free energy of necklace quiver theories dual to massive IIA

We investigate the S 3 free energy of N = 3 Chern-Simons-matter quiver gauge theories with gauge group U(N) r (r ≥ 2) where the sum of Chern-Simons levels does not vanish, beyond the leading order in the large-N limit. We take two different approaches to explore the sub-leading structures of the free energy. First we evaluate the matrix integral for the partition function in the ’t Hooft limit using a saddle point approximation. Second we use an ideal Fermi-gas model to compute the same partition function, but in the limit of fixed Chern-Simons levels. The resulting expressions for the free energy F = – log Z are then compared in the overlapping parameter regime. The Fermi-gas approach also hints at a universal 1/6 log N correction to the free energy. Since the quiver gauge theories we consider are dual to massive Type IIA theory, we expect the sub-leading correction of the planar free energy in the large ’t Hooft parameter limit to match higher-derivative corrections to the tree-level holographic dual free energy, which have not yet been fully investigated.

Non-invertible global symmetries and completeness of the spectrum

It is widely believed that consistent theories of quantum gravity satisfy two basic kinematic constraints: they are free from any global symmetry, and they contain a complete spectrum of gauge charges. For compact, abelian gauge groups, completeness follows from the absence of a 1-form global symmetry. However, this correspondence breaks down for more general gauge groups, where the breaking of the 1-form symmetry is insufficient to guarantee a complete spectrum. We show that the correspondence may be restored by broadening our notion of symmetry to include non-invertible topological operators, and prove that their absence is sufficient to guarantee a complete spectrum for any compact, possibly disconnected gauge group. In addition, we prove an analogous statement regarding the completeness of twist vortices: codimension-2 objects defined by a discrete holonomy around their worldvolume, such as cosmic strings in four dimensions. We discuss how this correspondence is modified in various, more general contexts, including non-compact gauge groups, Higgsing of gauge theories, and the addition of Chern-Simons terms. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for the Swampland program, as well as the phenomenological implications of the existence of twist strings.

The inflated Chern-Simons number in spectator chromo-natural inflation

The chromo-natural inflation (CNI) scenario predicts a potentially detectable chiral gravitational wave signal, generated by a Chern-Simons coupling between a rolling scalar axion field and an SU(2) gauge field with an isotropy-preserving classical background during inflation. However, the generation of this signal requires a very large integer Chern-Simons level, which can be challenging to explain or embed in a UV-complete model. We show that this challenge persists in the phenomenologically viable spectator field CNI (S-CNI) model. Furthermore, we show that a clockwork scenario giving rise to a large integer as a product of small integers can never produce a Chern-Simons level large enough to have successful S-CNI phenomenology. We briefly discuss other constraints on the model, both in effective field theory based on partial-wave unitarity bounds and in quantum gravity based on the Weak Gravity Conjecture, which may be relevant for further explorations of alternative UV completions.

$T\bar{T}$ in JT Gravity and BF Gauge Theory

JT gravity has a first-order formulation as a two-dimensional BF theory, which can be viewed as the dimensional reduction of the Chern-Simons description of 3d 3 d gravity. We consider {T\overbar{T}} T T ¯ -type deformations of the (0+1) ( 0 + 1 ) -dimensional dual to this 2d 2 d BF theory and interpret the deformation as a modification of the BF theory boundary conditions. The fundamental observables in this deformed BF theory, and in its 3d 3 d Chern-Simons lift, are Wilson lines and loops. In the 3d 3 d Chern-Simons setting, we study modifications to correlators involving boundary-anchored Wilson lines which are induced by a {T\overbar{T}} T T ¯ deformation on the 2d 2 d boundary; results are presented at both the classical level (using modified boundary conditions) and the quantum-mechanical level (using conformal perturbation theory). Finally, we calculate the analogous deformed Wilson line correlators in 2d 2 d BF theory below the Hagedorn temperature where the principal series dominates over the discrete series.

Axion-gauge coupling quantization with a twist

The possible couplings of an axion to gauge fields depend on the global structure of the gauge group. If the Standard Model gauge group is minimal, or equivalently if fractionally charged color-singlet particles are forbidden, then the QCD axion’s Chern-Simons couplings to photons and gluons obey correlated quantization conditions. Specifically, the photon coupling can have a fractional part which is a multiple of 1/3, but which is determined by the gluon coupling. A consequence of this result is that, among all theories with a minimal gauge group and minimal axion coupling to gluons, the smallest possible axion-photon amplitude |g aγγ | arises for E/N = 8/3. This provides a new motivation for experiments targeting this axion-photon coupling.

Non-orientable AdS 3 and its holography

Known solutions to three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant consist of either AdS 3 or its orbifolds (or orientifolds). We geometrically derive a novel non-orientable AdS 3 spacetime that is an orientifold of a spinor double cover of AdS 3 . This spacetime’s universal cover contains a lightlike compact direction instead of AdS 3 ’s spacelike compact direction. We show that its gravity theory possesses a simpler excited state spectrum and a Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino-Witt (CS/WZW) correspondence between a single independent CS term and boundary chiral WZW term. This leads us to suggest that CS theory is able to more fully describe non-orientable pure gravity theory compared to orientable gravity.

Effective fractonic behavior in a two-dimensional exactly solvable spin liquid

In this work we propose a \mathbb{Z}_N ℤ N clock model which is exactly solvable on the lattice. We find exotic properties for the low-energy physics, such as UV/IR mixing and excitations with restricted mobility, that resemble fractonic physics from higher dimensional models. We then study the continuum descriptions for the lattice system in two distinct regimes and find two qualitative distinct field theories for each one of them. A characteristic time scale that grows exponentially fast with N^2 N 2 (and diverges rapidly as function of system parameters) separates these two regimes. For times below this scale, the system is described by an effective fractonic Chern-Simons-like action, where higher-form symmetries prevent quasiparticles from hopping. In this regime, the system behaves effectively as a fracton as isolated particles, in practice, never leave their original position. Beyond the large characteristic time scale, the excitations are mobile and the effective field theory is given by a pure mutual Chern-Simons action. In this regime, the UV/IR properties of the system is captured by a peculiar realization of the translation group.

The anomaly that was not meant IIB

Type IIB supergravity enjoys a discrete non-Abelian duality group, which has potential quantum anomalies. In this paper we explicitly compute these, and present the bordism group that controls them, modulo some physically motivated assumptions. Quite surprisingly, we find that they do not vanish, which naively would signal an inconsistency of F-theory. Remarkably, a subtle modification of the standard 10d Chern-Simons term cancels these anomalies, a fact which relies on the specific field content of type IIB supergravity. We also discover other ways to cancel this anomaly, via a topological analog of the Green-Schwarz mechanism. These alternative type IIB theories have the same low energy supergravity limit as ordinary type IIB, but a different spectrum of extended objects. They could either be part of the Swampland, or connect to the standard theory via domain walls.

Anomalous hydrodynamics effective actions from holography

We derive an effective action for charged plasmas with an anomalous (abelian) global current charge current using holography. The holographic description is captured by the dynamics of an Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in an asymptotically AdS spacetime. The ’t Hooft anomaly contribution, which is encoded in the Chern-Simons term, contributes at the Gaussian order in the effective action only in the momentum diffusion sector, where it leads to chiral shear waves. However, as we demonstrate, beyond the Gaussian order, there is non-trivial imprint of the parity-violating anomaly term in sound and charge diffusion dynamics as well.

Conformal boundary conditions for a 4d scalar field

We construct unitary, stable, and interacting conformal boundary conditions for a free massless scalar in four dimensions by coupling it to edge modes living on a boundary. The boundary theories we consider are bosonic and fermionic QED _3 3 with N_f N f flavors and a Chern-Simons term at level k k , in the large- N_f N f limit with fixed k/N_f k / N f . We find that interacting boundary conditions only exist when k≠ 0 k ≠ 0 . To obtain this result we compute the \beta β functions of the classically marginal couplings at the first non-vanishing order in the large- N_f N f expansion, and to all orders in k/N_f k / N f and in the couplings. To check vacuum stability we also compute the large- N_f N f effective potential. We compare our results with the the known conformal bootstrap bounds.

Noncommutative gauge symmetry in the fractional quantum Hall effect

Abstract We show that a system of particles on the lowest Landau level can be coupled to a probe U(1) gauge field$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A μ in such a way that the theory is invariant under a noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry. While the temporal component$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A 0 of the probe field is coupled to the projected density operator, the spatial components$$ \mathcal{A} $$ A i are best interpreted as quantum displacements, which distort the interaction potential between the particles. We develop a Seiberg-Witten-type map from the noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry to a simpler version, which we call “baby noncommutative” gauge symmetry, where the Moyal brackets are replaced by the Poisson brackets. The latter symmetry group is isomorphic to the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms. By using this map, we resolve the apparent contradiction between the noncommutative gauge symmetry, on the one hand, and the particle-hole symmetry of the half-filled Landau level and the presence of the mixed Chern-Simons terms in the effective Lagrangian of the fractional quantum Hall states, on the other hand. We outline the general procedure which can be used to write down effective field theories which respect the noncommutative U(1) symmetry.

Electric polarization in inhomogeneous crystals

In this work, we derive the charge density up to second order in spatial gradient in inhomogeneous crystals using the semiclassical coarse graining procedure based on the wave packet method. It can be recast as divergence of polarization, whose first-order contribution consists of three parts, a perturbative correction to the original Berry connection expression, a topological part that can be written as an integral of the Chern-Simons 3-form, and a previously-unknown, quadrupolelike contribution. The topological part can be related to the quantized fractional charge carried by a vortex in two-dimensional systems. We then generalize our results to the multiband case and show that the quadrupolelike contribution plays an important role, as it makes the total polarization gauge-independent. Finally, we verify our theory in several model systems.

Dynamical piezomagnetic effect in time-reversal-invariant Weyl semimetals with axionic charge density waves

Charge density waves (CDWs) in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been shown to induce an exotic axionic insulating phase in which the sliding mode (phason) of the CDW acts as a dynamical axion field, giving rise to a large positive magnetoconductance. In this work, we predict that dynamical strain can induce a bulk orbital magnetization in time-reversal (TR)-invariant WSMs that are gapped by a CDW. Here, we term this effect the “dynamical piezomagnetic effect” (DPME). Unlike in J. Gooth et al., the DPME introduced in this work occurs in a bulk-constant (i.e., static and spatially homogeneous in the bulk) CDW, and does not rely on fluctuations, such as a phason. By studying the low-energy effective theory and a minimal tight-binding (TB) model, we find that the DPME originates from an effective valley axion field that couples the electromagnetic gauge field with a strain-induced pseudogauge field. In particular, whereas the piezoelectric effects studied in previous works are characterized by 2D Berry curvature, the DPME represents the first example of a fundamentally 3D strain effect originating from the Chern-Simons 3-form. We further find that the DPME has a discontinuous change at a critical value of the phase of the CDW order parameter. We demonstrate that, when there is a jump in the DPME, the surface of the system undergoes a topological quantum phase transition (TQPT), while the bulk remains gapped. Hence, the DPME provides a bulk signature of the boundary TQPT in a TR-invariant Weyl CDW.

Supersymmetry and superstrata in three dimensions

We analyze the supersymmetry transformations of gauged SO(4) supergravity coupled to extra hypermultiplets in three dimensions, and find large families of smooth BPS solutions that preserve four supersymmetries. These BPS solutions are part of the consistent truncation of some families of six-dimensional superstrata. From the three-dimensional perspective, these solutions give rise to “smoothly-capped BTZ” geometries. We show how the twisting of the spin connection, the holomorphy of the fields, and the Chern-Simons connections all play an essential role in the existence of these supersymmetric solutions. This paper also closes the circle on the consistent truncation of superstrata, showing precisely how every feature of the superstratum enters into the three-dimensional BPS structure.

Proving the 6d Cardy formula and matching global gravitational anomalies

A Cardy formula for 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) conjectured by Di Pietro and Komargodski in [1] governs the universal behavior of the supersymmetric partition function on S^1_\beta \times S^5 S β 1 × S 5 in the limit of small \beta β and fixed squashing of the S^5 S 5 . For a general 6d SCFT, we study its 5d effective action, which is dominated by the supersymmetric completions of perturbatively gauge-invariant Chern-Simons terms in the small \beta β limit. Explicitly evaluating these supersymmetric completions gives the precise squashing dependence in the Cardy formula. For SCFTs with a pure Higgs branch (also known as very Higgsable SCFTs), we determine the Chern-Simons levels by explicitly going onto the Higgs branch and integrating out the Kaluza-Klein modes of the 6d fields on S^1_\beta S β 1 . We then discuss tensor branch flows, where an apparent mismatch between the formula in [1] and the free field answer requires an additional contribution from BPS strings. This ``missing contribution’’ is further sharpened by the relation between the fractional part of the Chern-Simons levels and the (mixed) global gravitational anomalies of the 6d SCFT. We also comment on the Cardy formula for 4d \mathcal{N}=2 𝒩 = 2 SCFTs in relation to Higgs branch and Coulomb branch flows.

Dark Grand Unification in the axiverse: decaying axion dark matter and spontaneous baryogenesis

The quantum chromodynamics axion with a decay constant near the Grand Unification (GUT) scale has an ultralight mass near a neV. We show, however, that axion-like particles with masses near the keV–PeV range with GUT-scale decay constants are also well motivated in that they naturally arise from axiverse theories with dark c gauge groups. We demonstrate that the correct dark matter abundance may be achieved by the heavy axions in these models through the misalignment mechanism in combination with a period of early matter domination from the long-lived dark glueballs of the same gauge group. Heavy axion dark matter may decay to two photons, yielding mono-energetic electromagnetic signatures that may be detectable by current or next-generation space-based telescopes. We project the sensitivity of next-generation telescopes including Athena, AMEGO, and e-ASTROGAM to such decaying axion dark matter. If the dark sector contains multiple confining gauge groups, then the observed primordial baryon asymmetry may also be achieved in this scenario through spontaneous baryogenesis. We present explicit orbifold constructions where the dark gauge groups unify with the SM at the GUT scale and axions emerge as the fifth components of dark gauge fields with bulk Chern-Simons terms.
