Preparing for Delivery of the Lunar Ice Cube Compact IR Spectrometer Payload

Lunar Ice Cube, scheduled to be launched on ARTEMIS I in late 2021, is a deep space cubesat mission with the goalsof demonstrating 1) a cubesat-scale instrument (BIRCHES) capable of addressing NASA HEOMD Strategic KnowledgeGaps related to lunar volatile distribution (abundance, location, and transportation physics of water ice), and 2) cubesatpropulsion, via the Busek BIT 3 RF Ion engine. The mission will also demonstrate the AIM/IRIS microcryocooler for thefirst time in deep space. BIRCHES integration is nearly complete, with several changes made to the thermal design toimprove detector performance. Final preflight instrument testing and calibration, our ongoing concern to be emphasizedhere, have been delayed due to the mandated closure rules of NASA facilities. Lunar Ice Cube, along with two othercubesats deployed from ARTEMIS I, Lunar Flashlight and LunaH-Map, will be the first deep cubesat missions to deliverscience data to the Planetary Data System.

Corner cube model for internal metrology system of Space Interferometer Mission (SIM)

A corner cube (CC) articulation model has been developed to evaluate the SIM internal metrology (IntMet) optical delay bias (with the accuracy of picometer) due to the component imperfections, such as vertex offset, reflection coating index error, dihedral error, and surface figure error at each facet. This physics-based and MATLAB-implemented geometric optics model provides useful guidance on the flight system design, integration, and characterization. The first portion of this paper covers the CC model details. Then several feature of the model, such as metrology beam footprint visualization, roofline straddling/crossing analysis, and application to drive the sub-system design and the error budget flow-down, are demonstrated in the second part.

Root-cubing and general root-powering methods for finding the zeros of polynomials

Mathematical analysis technique generalizes a root squaring and root cubing method into a general root powering method. The introduction of partitioned polynomials into this general root powering method simplifies the coding of the polynomial transformations into input data suitable for processing by computer. The method includes analytic functions.

Analysis of requirements for GEOS-C laser cube-corner reflector panels

A mathematical analysis of the tradeoffs and requirements was performed to develop an improved array design which will give stronger returns at lower elevation angles and reduce pulse spread in the return. It was determined that a zenith angle of 75deg can be obtained with an array with an area of 0.28 sq m, if the array is shaped on the surface of a 45 deg cone whose axis is coincident to the satellite axis. The total weight of the truncated pyramid array with 270 cube corners is calculated to be not more than 50% greater than the GEOS 2 array, while the efficiency is increased 275%.

Double floating probe measurements on S-cubed A

Results of plasmapause measurements made onboard S cubed A (explorer 45) satellite are presented. Data cover model calculations made to explain the observed probe potential behavior, comparison of satellite data with VLF data to establish that certain effects seen are interpretable as the plasmapause, and plasmapause behavior during the December 17, 1971 magnetic storm.

The statistics of laser returns from cube-corner arrays on satellite

A method first presented by Goodman is used to derive an equation for the statistical effects associated with laser returns from satellites having retroreflecting arrays of cube corners. The effect of the distribution on the returns of a satellite-tracking system is illustrated by a computation based on randomly generated numbers.

Measurement of the lidar cross sections of cube corner arrays for laser ranging of satellites

The satellite coordinate system necessary to describe the location and orientation of each cube corner in the array is discussed. The method of optical testing is described along with the gain function, and computational methods for deriving the gain function and experimental values for it. The velocity aberration is derived as a function of satellite orbit, a complete method for cross section evaluation is described, and finally the radar equation is described.

Cube corner retroreflector test and analysis

Cube corner retroreflectors with nominal dihedral angles of 90 deg 0 min 1.5 sec were fabricated, tested, and analyzed to determine the return energy in the annular ring of the far field diffraction pattern required by the Laser Geodynamic Satellite. Performance was assessed for variations in the dihedral angles, optical surfaces, and thermal environment. Despite relatively high independent axial and radial sensitivities, the changes caused by the anticipated thermal environment were found to be negligible; however, there were substantial variations between the analytical predictions and measured performance.-

The indirect binary n-cube array

The array is built from a large number (hundreds or thousands) of microprocessors or microcomputers linked through a switching network into an indirect binary n-cube array. Control is two level, the array operating synchronously, or in lock step, at the higher level, and with the broadcast commands being locally interpreted into rewritable microinstruction streams in the microprocessors and in the switch control units. The key to the design is the switching array. By properly programming it, the array can be made into a wide variety of virtual arrays which are well adapted to a wide range of applications. It is believed that the flexibility of the switching array can be used to obtain fault avoidance, which appears necessary in any highly parallel design.

Light scattering by randomly oriented cubes and parallelepipeds

In this paper, the geometric ray tracing theory for the scattering of light by hexagonal cylinders to cubes and parallelepipeds has been modified. Effects of the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index and aspect ratio of the particle on the scattering phase function and the degree of linear polarization are investigated. Causes of the physical features in the scattering polarization patterns are identified in terms of the scattering contribution due to geometric reflections and refractions. The single-scattering phase function and polarization data presented in this paper should be of some use for the interpretation of observed scattering and polarization data from planetary atmospheres and for the physical understanding of the transfer of radiation in an atmosphere containing nonspherical particles.

Single-color laser ranging with a cube-corner-retroreflector array

Lidar cross section of some typical types of cube-corner retroreflectors (CCRs) having a three corner mirror system is investigated for the case that the CCR is tilted from the normal illumination axis. Analytic expressions for the effective aperture area for the two typical window types (circular and hexagonal) of CCRs are obtained for the case that the CCR is tilted. The range of incidence angle in which only the total reflection occurs at all three uncoated corner mirrors has been found to vary considerably with the orientation of CCR and the refractive index of the CCR prism. The analytical expression for the far-field diffraction pattern of a tilted CCR is obtained by taking different polarization transformation of the six sectors of the effective reflecting aperture into account. This expression is essential when evaluating the lidar cross section of a moving CCR which is tilted in general. Formulas for the angles defining the six sectors have also been obtained.

Isothermal magnetostatic atmospheres. II - Similarity solutions with current proportional to the magnetic potential cubed

The paper presents a family of isothermal magnetostatic atmospheres with one ignorable coordinate corresponding to a uniform gravitational field in a plane geometry. The distributed current in the model J is directed along the x-axis, where x is the horizontal ignorable coordinate. The current J is taken to be proportional to the cube of the magnetostatic potential A and falls off exponentially with distance vertical to the base with an e-folding distance equal to the gravitational scale height. A range of similarity solution examples are displayed depending on the values of the similarity parameters. Each similarity parameter corresponds to a symmetry of the underlying nonlinear elliptic equation for A. The similarity parameters also determine the source currents for the potential field solution of the family. The solutions show the interplay between the gravitational force, the J & B force (B, magnetic field induction) and the gas pressure gradient.

Effects of Cobalt Concentration on the Relative Resistance to Octahedral and Cube Slip in Nickel-Base Superalloys

Compression yielding tests were performed at 760 C on crystals of the Ni base superalloys Rene 150 and a modified MAR-M247, both having two different Co concentrations. For both alloy bases, increasing Co concentration was shown to decrease the critical resolved shear stress for octahedral slip, but to have little effect on that for cube slip. The results suggest that decreasing complex stacking fault energy in the gamma-prime with increasing Co could account for the observed effects.
