Rotational fluid coupling eliminates hose entanglements

Rotational fluid coupling mechanism circulates a temperature controlled fluid between a stationary heat exchanger and a coolant plate on a rotating platform. The mechanism consists of two concentric cylinders containing one or more flexible tubes which are controlled and positioned in such a way that it eliminates tubing entanglement.

Correlation of windage-loss data for a Lundell alternator

Viscous torque (windage) of a Lundell-shaped rotor having a major diameter of 20.3 cm (8 in.) rotating within a concentric housing was measured at speeds up to 36,000 rpm. The center cylindrical section of the housing was tested with both a smooth surface and axial slots to simulate alternator winding slots. For concentric cylinders, the range of Reynolds numbers was extended to 70,000. Three radial clearances, 1, 2, and 4 mm (0.04, 0.08, and 0.16in.), corresponding to 1, 2, and 4 percent of the rotor radius, were tested.

Shielding of longitudinal magnetic fields with thin, closely, spaced concentric cylindrical shells with applications to atomic clocks

A general formula is given for the longitudinal shielding effectiveness of N closed concentric cylinders. The use of these equations is demonstrated by application to the design of magnetic shields for hydrogen maser atomic clocks. Examples of design tradeoffs such as size, weight, and material thickness are discussed. Experimental results on three sets of shields fabricated by three manufacturers are presented. Two of the sets were designed employing the techniques described. Agreement between the experimental results and the design calculations is then demonstrated.

Elastic lithosphere thickness on the moon from mare tectonic features - A formal inversion

The thickness (T) of the lunar elastic lithosphere at the time (3.6 to 3.8 billion years ago) of the earliest preserved basalt flows in circular mare basins can be estimated by inverting the observed locations of extensional tectonic features in and surrounding the maria. In performing the inversion, the lithosphere is modeled as an elastic shell with a liquid interior, and the basalt load for each mare is approximated by a set of concentric cylinders. To permit solving the forward problem of placing radial limits on the positions of the rilles around a given mare, an additional parameter F, the ratio of the radial stress at the radial limits to the maximum radial stress, is introduced. T and F are chosen to give the best weighted-squares fit of the radial limits to the observations, and are used as the initial values in a linearized matrix inversion to check the resolution and estimate errors. The application of the procedure to three maria with prominent extensional features, Humorum, Orientale, and Serenitatis, gives values of T from about 40 + or - 10 to 50 + or - 10 km, and in each case the linearized matrix equation has an exact inverse.

Retractable Rotating Door Latch

New mechanism turns door latch, latching or unlatching door, then retracts until latch is flush with surface of door frame. Concentric cylinders have cam grooves machined in surfaces. When rotated relative to each other cylinders impart rotation and translation to shaft of door latch. Motions may proceed separately or simultaneously.

Flow Resistivity Instrument

A method and apparatus for making in-situ measurements of flow resistivity on the Earth's ground surface is summarized. The novel feature of the invention is two concentric cylinders, inserted into the ground surface with a measured pressure applied to the surface inside the inner cylinder. The outer cylinder vents a plane beneath the surface to the atmosphere through an air space. The flow to the inner cylinder is measured thereby indicating the flow from the surface to the plane beneath the surface.

Formation of turbulence around flow singularities

The formation of turbulence around singular points of a flow such as stagnation points, tangential jumps of velocity, are analyzed. It is proved that turbulence is inevitably generated by the rear stagnation point, but cannot be generated by the nose stagnation point of a streamlined body. Special attention is paid to an evolution of turbulence induced by a tangential jump of velocity. A qualitative analysis of a turbulent flow between two rotating concentric cylinders and around a streamlined cylinder is given.

Complex eigenvalues for the stability of Couette flow

The eigenvalue problem for the linear stability of Couette flow between rotating concentric cylinders to axisymmetric disturbances is considered. It is shown by numerical calculations and by formal perturbation methods that when the outer cylinder is at rest there exist complex eigenvalues corresponding to oscillatory damped disturbances. The structure of the first few eigenvalues in the spectrum is discussed. The results do not contradict the principle of exchange of stabilities, namely, for a fixed axial wavenumber the first mode to become unstable as the speed of the inner cylinder is increased is nonoscillatory as the stability boundary is crossed.

Improved heat switch for gas sorption compressor

Thermal conductivities of the charcoal bed and the copper matrix for the gas adsorption compressor were measured by the concentric-cylinder method. The presence of the copper matrix in the charcoal bed enhanced the bed conductance by at least an order of magnitude. Thermal capacities of the adsorbent cell and the heat leaks to two compressor designs were measured by the transient method. The new gas adsorption compressor had a heat switch that could transfer eight times more heat than the previous one. The cycle time for the new prototype compressor is also improved by a factor of eight to within the minute range.

On the secondary instability of Taylor-Goertler vortices to Tollmien-Schlichting waves in fully-developed flows

There are many flows of practical importance where both Tollmien-Schlichting waves and Taylor-Goertler vortices are possible causes of transition to turbulence. The effect of fully nonlinear Taylor-Goertler vortices on the growth of small amplitude Tollmien-Schlichting waves is investigated. The basic state considered is the fully developed flow between concentric cylinders driven by an azimuthal pressure gradient. It is hoped that an investigation of this problem will shed light on the more complicated external boundary layer problem where again both modes of instability exist in the presence of concave curvature. The type of Tollmein-Schlichting waves considered have the asymptotic structure of lower branch modes of plane Poisseulle flow. Whilst instabilities at lower Reynolds number are possible, the latter modes are simpler to analyze and more relevant to the boundary layer problem. The effect of fully nonlinear Taylor-Goertler vortices on both two-dimensional and three-dimensional waves is determined. It is shown that, whilst the maximum growth as a function of frequency is not greatly affected, there is a large destabilizing effect over a large range of frequencies.

Strange attractors in weakly turbulent Couette-Taylor flow

An experiment is conducted on the transition from quasi-periodic to weakly turbulent flow of a fluid contained between concentric cylinders with the inner cylinder rotating and the outer cylinder at rest. Power spectra, phase-space portraits, and circle maps obtained from velocity time-series data indicate that the nonperiodic behavior observed is deterministic, that is, it is described by strange attractors. Various problems that arise in computing the dimension of strange attractors constructed from experimental data are discussed and it is shown that these problems impose severe requirements on the quantity and accuracy of data necessary for determining dimensions greater than about 5. In the present experiment the attractor dimension increases from 2 at the onset of turbulence to about 4 at a Reynolds number 50-percent above the onset of turbulence.

Combined conduction and radiation heat transfer in concentric cylindrical media

The exact radiative transfer expressions for gray and nongray gases which are absorbing, emitting and nonscattering, contained between infinitely long concentric cylinders with black surfaces, are given in local thermodynamic equilibrium. Resulting energy equations due to the combination of conduction and radiation modes of heat transfer, under steady state conditions for gray and nongray media, are solved numerically using the undetermined parameters method. A single 4.3-micron band of CO2 is considered for the nongray problems. The present solutions for gray and nongray gases obtained in the plane-parallel limit (radius ratio approaches to one) are compared with the plane-parallel results reported in the literature.

The isothermal fatigue behavior of a unidirectional SiC/Ti composite and the Ti alloy matrix

The high temperature fatigue behavior of a metal matrix composite (MMC) consisting of Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn (Ti-15-3) matrix reinforced by 33 vol percent of continuous unidirectional SiC fibers was experimentally and analytically evaluated. Isothermal MMC fatigue tests with constant amplitude loading parallel to the fiber direction were performed at 300 and 550 C. Comparative fatigue tests of the Ti-15-3 matrix alloy were also conducted. Composite fatigue behavior and the in-situ stress state of the fiber and matrix were analyzed with a micromechanical model, the Concentric Cylinder Model (CCM). The cyclic stress-strain response of the composite was stable at 300 C. However, an increase in cyclic mean strain foreshortened MMC fatigue life at high strain ranges at 550 C. Fatigue tests of the matrix alloy and CCM analyses indicated this response was associated with stress relaxation of the matrix in the composite.

A numerical study of bifurcations in a barotropic shear flow

In the last few years, more and more evidence has emerged suggesting that transition to turbulence may be viewed as a succession of bifurcations to deterministic chaos. Most experimental and numerical observations have been restricted to Rayleigh-Benard convection and Taylor-Couette flow between concentric cylinders. An attempt is made to accurately describe the bifurcation sequence leading to chaos in a 2-D temporal free shear layer on the beta-plane. The beta-plane is a locally Cartesian reduction of the equations describing the dynamicss of a shallow layer of fluid on a rotating spherical planet. It is a valid model for large scale flows of interest in meteorology and oceanography.
