Voltage controller/current limiter for ac

Circuit protects ac power systems for overload failures, limits power surge and short-circuit currents to 150 percent of steady state level, regulates ac output voltage, and soft starts loads. Limiter generates dc error signal in response to line fluctuations and dumps power when overload is reached. Device is inserted between ac source and load.

Transistor current and voltage limiting switch

Limiting circuit protects the main power supply of electronic modules and limits the current drawn by each module should a short circuit occur. It limits current within one mA when used with direct current of either polarity, or with pulse or ac power sources from direct current to 100 kHz.

Latent-failure risk estimates for computer control

It is shown that critical computer controls employing unmonitored safety circuits are unsafe. Analysis supporting this result leads to two additional, important conclusions: (1) annual maintenance checks of safety circuit function do not, as widely believed, eliminate latent failure risk; (2) safety risk remains even if multiple, series-connected protection circuits are employed. Finally, it is shown analytically that latent failure risk is eliminated when continuous monitoring is employed.

Binary-selectable detector holdoff circuit

High-speed switching circuit protects detectors from sudden, extremely-intense backscattered radiation that results from short-range atmospheric dust layers, or low-level clouds, entering laser/radar field of view. Function of circuit is to provide computer-controlled switching of photodiode detector, preamplifier power-supply voltages, in approximately 10 nanoseconds.

Protective Socket For Integrated Circuits

Socket for intergrated circuits (IC's) protects from excessive voltages and currents or from application of voltages and currents in wrong sequence during insertion or removal. Contains built-in switch that opens as IC removed, disconnecting leads from signals and power. Also protects other components on circuit board from transients produced by insertion and removal of IC. Makes unnecessary to turn off power to entire circuit board so other circuits on board continue to function.

Inherent overload protection for the series resonant converter

The overload characteristics of the full bridge series resonant power converter are considered. This includes analyses of the two most common control methods presently in use. The first of these uses a current zero crossing detector to synchronize the control signals and is referred to as the alpha controller. The second is driven by a voltage controlled oscillator and is referred to as the gamma controller. It is shown that the gamma controller has certain reliability advantages in that it can be designed with inherent short circuit protection. Experimental results are included for an 86 kHz converter using power metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs).

ARC-SAFE: Accelerated Response semiconducting Contactors and Surge Attenuation For DC Electrical systems (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

The landscape of power transmission and distribution is quickly evolving as more power conversion is done through power electronics and transmitted or distributed at medium voltage direct current (MVDC). As power electronics tend to store less energy and be less resilient to faults than conventional power transformers, a reliable and fast protection against faults is critical to protect power electronics (PE) based infrastructure, especially for medium- and high-voltage applications. This motivates the development of PE based protection circuits to replace slower contemporary electromechanical breakers. In this project a novel PE based MVDC circuit breaker is developed; the new design is comprised of 1) a normally-on leg made of commercially-available, cascaded SiC junction field effect transistors (JFETs) with a passive balancing network, and 2) a normally-off leg based on an optically-triggered gallium nitride (GaN) photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS). The normally-off leg was designed to be quickly turned on, to divert current to an auxiliary dissipative circuit, as the normally-on leg is turned off. This approach, using solid-state devices, was selected for a high-performance, fast-switching operation for the DC circuit breaker as compared to approaches that use slower mechanical switches. To be practical, the circuit breaker must have low conduction loss (low Ron) in the normally-on leg and fast coordinated triggering of the normally-off leg to avoid damage from inductive flyback, which could be considerable for long lengths of cable.

Design analysis and computer-aided performance evaluation of shuttle orbiter electrical power system. Volume 1: Summary

Studies were conducted to develop appropriate space shuttle electrical power distribution and control (EPDC) subsystem simulation models and to apply the computer simulations to systems analysis of the EPDC. A previously developed software program (SYSTID) was adapted for this purpose. The following objectives were attained: (1) significant enhancement of the SYSTID time domain simulation software, (2) generation of functionally useful shuttle EPDC element models, and (3) illustrative simulation results in the analysis of EPDC performance, under the conditions of fault, current pulse injection due to lightning, and circuit protection sizing and reaction times.
