Analysis of thrust augmentation of turbojet engines by water injection at compressor inlet including charts for calculating compression processes with water injection

A psychrometric chart having total pressure (sum of partial pressures of air and water vapor) as a variable, a Mollier diagram for air saturated with water vapor, and charts showing the thermodynamic properties of various air-water vapor and exhaust gas-water vapor mixtures are presented as aids in calculating the thrust augmentation of a turbojet engine resulting from the injection of water at the compressor inlet. Curves are presented that show the theoretical performance of the augmentation method for various amounts of water injected and the effects of varying flight Mach number, altitude, ambient-air temperature, ambient relative humidity, compressor pressure ratio, and inlet-diffuser efficiency. Numerical examples, illustrating the use of the psychrometric chart and the Mollier diagram in calculating both compressor-inlet and compressor-outlet conditions when water is injected at the compressor inlet, are presented.

Charts relating the compressive buckling stress of longitudinally supported plates to the effective deflectional and rotational stiffness of the supports

A stability analysis is made of a long flat rectangular plate subjected to a uniform longitudinal compressive stress and supported along its longitudinal edges and along one or more longitudinal lines by elastic line supports. The elastic supports possess deflectional and rotational stiffness. Such configuration is an idealization of the compression cover skin and internal structure of a wing and tail surfaces. The results of the analysis are presented in the form of charts in which the buckling-stress coefficient is plotted against the buckle length of the plate for a wide range of support stiffnesses. The charts make possible the determination of the compressive buckling stress of plates supported by members whose stiffness may or may not be defined by elementary beam bending and twisting theory but yet whose effective restraint is amenable to evaluation. The deflectional and rotational stiffness provided by longitudinal stiffeners and full-depth webs is discussed and numerical examples are given to illustrate the application of the charts to the design of wing structures.

SeaWiFS Science Algorithm Flow Chart

This flow chart describes the baseline science algorithms for the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) Data Processing System (SDPS). As such, it includes only processing steps used in the generation of the operational products that are archived by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC). It is meant to provide the reader with a basic understanding of the scientific algorithm steps applied to SeaWiFS data. It does not include non-science steps, such as format conversions, and places the greatest emphasis on the geophysical calculations of the level-2 processing. Finally, the flow chart reflects the logic sequences and the conditional tests of the software so that it may be used to evaluate the fidelity of the implementation of the scientific algorithm. In many cases however, the chart may deviate from the details of the software implementation so as to simplify the presentation.

An Investigation of Applications for Thermodynamic Work Potential Methods: Working Tables and Charts for Estimation of Thermodynamic Work Potential in Equilibrium Mixtures of Jet-A and Air

The objective of this report is to provide a tool to facilitate the application of thermodynamic work potential methods to aircraft and engine analysis. This starts with a discussion of the theoretical background underlying these methods, which is then used to derive various equations useful for thermodynamic analysis of aircraft engines. The work potential analysis method is implemented in the form of a set of working charts and tables that can be used to graphically evaluate work potential stored in high-enthalpy gas. The range of validity for these tables is 300 to 36,000 R, pressures between between 0.01 atm and 100 atm, and fuel-air ratios from zero to stoichiometric. The derivations and charts assume mixtures of Jet-A and air as the working fluid. The thermodynamic properties presented in these charts were calculated based upon standard thermodynamic curve fits.

Performance Charts for the Turbojet Engine

Charts are presented for computing the thrust, fuel consumption, and other performance values of a turbojet engine for any given set of operating conditions and component efficiencies. The effects of the pressure losses in the inlet duct and combustion chamber, the variation in the physical properties of the gas as it passes through the cycle, and the change in mass flow by the addition of fuel are included. The principle performance charts show the effects of the primary variables and correction charts provide the effects of the secondary variables.

Higher-order space-charge stability in anisotropic beams: Vlasov-Poisson derivation, refined dispersion relations, and stability charts

The Hofmann stability chart is used to screen working points in space-charge-dominated linacs. We identify two errors in its published higher-order dispersion relations: missing $(1\mp2\hatη^2/α)$ factors in the third-order $S^4$ coupling residues, and a sign error in the stated isotropic reduction of the fourth-order relation. Both corrections follow from Hofmann's Vlasov-Poisson equations without fitted parameters. They reproduce coherent tune-shift coefficients in the author's later monograph that the printed forms miss by 24% and 127%. Mode-resolved figures from a published application agree with the corrected relations and reject the printed forms, indicating an inconsistency between the 1998 equations and the calculations underlying those tested figures. We quantify the effect on the non-oscillatory stability chart. Inside the adopted $S^2\le10$ comparison domain, printed and corrected forms disagree on 0.73-2.11% of cells, with no preferred direction. Among excluded cells, disagreement reaches 22%, and the printed relation over-predicts instability at every sampled anisotropy. This concentration may help explain why the errors persisted, although it does not establish their historical cause. For PIP-II, the corrected chart flags four of thirty-two evaluable periods, including one on a third-order odd branch missed by a second-order screen. This count covers non-oscillatory modes only and remains conditional on an unresolved factor-five disagreement between two codes on transverse emittance growth.

Learning nuclear cross sections across the chart of nuclides with graph neural networks

We explore the use of deep learning techniques to learn how nuclear cross sections change as we add or remove protons and neutrons. As a proof of principle, we focus on the neutron-induced reactions in the fast energy regime. Our approach follows a two-stage learning framework. First, we apply representation learning to encode cross section data into a latent space using either variational autoencoders (VAEs) or implicit neural representations (INRs). Then, we train graph neural networks (GNNs) on the resulting embeddings to predict missing values across the nuclear chart by leveraging the topological structure of neighboring isotopes. We demonstrate accurate cross section predictions within a 9 × 9 block of missing nuclei. We also find that the optimal GNN training strategy depends on the type of latent representation used, with VAE embeddings performing best under end-to-end optimization in the original space, while INR embeddings achieve better results when the GNN is trained only in the latent space. Furthermore, using clustering algorithms, we map groups of latent vectors into regions of the nuclear chart and show that VAEs and INRs can discover some of the neutron magic numbers. These findings suggest that deep-learning models based on the representation encoding of cross sections combined with graph neural networks hold significant potential in augmenting nuclear theory models, e.g., by providing reliable estimates of covariances of cross sections, including cross-material covariances.

Primary fission fragment mass yields across the chart of nuclides

In this work, we have calculated a complete set of primary fission fragment mass yields, Y(A), for heavy nuclei across the chart of nuclides, including those of particular relevance to the rapid neutron capture process (r process) of nucleosynthesis. We assume that the nuclear shape dynamics are strongly damped, which allows for a description of the fission process via Brownian shape motion across nuclear potential-energy surfaces. The macroscopic energy of the potential was obtained with the Finite-Range Liquid-Drop Model (FRLDM), while the microscopic terms were extracted from the single-particle level spectra in the fissioning system by the Strutinsky procedure for the shell energies and the BCS treatment for the pairing energies. For each nucleus considered, the fission fragment mass yield, Y(A), is obtained from 50 000 to 500 000 random walks on the appropriate potential-energy surface. The full mass and charge yield, Y(Z,A), is then calculated by invoking the Wahl systematics. With this method, we have calculated a comprehensive set of fission-fragment yields from over 3800 nuclides bounded by 80 ≤ Z ≤ 130 and A ≤ 330; these yields are provided as an ASCII formatted database in the Supplemental Material. We compare our yields to known data and discuss general trends that emerge in low-energy fission yields across the chart of nuclides.
