New insight into knockout reactions from the two-proton halo nucleus 17 Ne

The unexplained disagreement in the dependence of spectroscopic factors (𝐶2⁢𝑆 exp ) on the binding energy obtained by nucleon knockout using different targets is still a puzzle that needs to be addressed. To find an explanation of this riddle through exclusive measurements using different targets. The exclusive measurements were performed by using a 17 Ne beam with an energy of 500 MeV/u incident on C and CH 2 targets. Through the standard theoretical approach, 𝐶 2⁢ 𝑆 exp were derived from the analysis of the experimental data on proton ejection from the proton halo in 17 Ne as well as from its core 15 O. For the C target, proton ejection from the proton halo gave 𝐶 2 ⁢𝑆 exp about 37% smaller than for the H target. But when protons are ejected from the core of 17 Ne, 𝐶 2 ⁢𝑆 exp are identical within statistical uncertainties. An explanation for the difference in 𝐶 2 ⁢𝑆 exp could be the removal of both halo protons, a more important reaction pathway for the C target. The 𝐶 2 ⁢𝑆 exp values obtained by analyzing the proton ejection from the core indicate that it is not affected by the interaction with the halo protons.

Dipole Strength Distribution of 8 He and Decay Characteristics

The weak binding and spatially extended neutron densities characteristic of drip-line nuclei give rise to a distinctive low-energy dipole response. The drip-line nucleus 8 He is the most neutron-rich bound nucleus with a mass-to-charge ratio of 𝐴/𝑍 = 4. We measure the dipole response of 8 He, including for the first time the four-neutron decay channel. A total dipole strength of ∑𝐵⁡(𝐸⁢1)(𝐸*< 15 MeV) = 0.95⁢(16)⁢𝑒 2 fm 2 and a dipole polarizability of 𝛼 𝐷 = 0.61⁢(1) fm 3 are extracted from the differential Coulomb-excitation cross section and compared to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations employing coupled cluster and three-body approaches. We find that the dipole continuum is dominated, even at high excitation energies well above the 4⁢𝑛 decay threshold, by two-neutron emission, pointing to a 6 He + 2⁢𝑛 structure of the excited dipole mode. No indication was found for a 4⁢𝑛 final-state correlation, while pronounced 𝑛⁢𝑛 and 6 He−𝑛 final-state correlations are apparent.

Structural Simluation Toolkit (SST) v.12.0

The Structural Simulation Toolkit (SST) was developed to explore innovations in highly concurrent computing systems where the instruction set architecture (ISA), micro-architecture, and memory interact with the programming model and communications system. The package provides a fully modular design for extensive exploration of an individual system parameter as well as a parallel simulation environment based on message passing interface (MPI) which enable a high level of performance as well as the ability to look at large systems. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

2024 NMDC Ambassador Training Materials [Slides]

The NMDC is a sustainable data discovery platform that promotes open science and shared-ownership across a broad and diverse community of researchers, funders, publishers, societies, and other collaborators. The NMDC aims to enable multi-omic microbiome research to accelerate scientific discovery. The NMDC is a Department of Energy funded program that is a collaboration between 3 National Laboratories: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

Lunar lander conceptual design

A conceptual design is presented of a Lunar Lander, which can be the primary vehicle to transport the equipment necessary to establish a surface lunar base, the crew that will man the base, and the raw materials which the Lunar Station will process. A Lunar Lander will be needed to operate in the regime between the lunar surface and low lunar orbit (LLO), up to 200 km. This lander is intended for the establishment and operation of a manned surface base on the moon and for the support of the Lunar Space Station. The lander will be able to fulfill the requirements of 3 basic missions: A mission dedicated to delivering maximum payload for setting up the initial lunar base; Multiple missions between LLO and lunar surface dedicated to crew rotation; and Multiple missions dedicated to cargo shipments within the regime of lunar surface and LLO. A complete set of structural specifications is given.

Gulf of Mexico Helicopter Offshore System Technologies Engineering Needs Assessment

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is conducting a research and development program to modernize the National Airspace System (NAS). The mission of NASA's Advanced Air Transportation Technologies (AATT) project is to develop advanced Air Traffic Management (ATM) concepts and decision support tools for eventual deployment and implementation by the FAA and the private sector. One major objective of the NASA AATT project is to understand and promote the needs of all user classes. The Gulf of Mexico (GoMex) airspace has unique needs. A large number of helicopters operate in this area with only limited surveillance and sometimes-severe environmental conditions. Thunderstorms are the most frequent weather hazard during the spring, summer, and fall. In winter, reduced hours of daylight, low ceilings, strong winds, and icing conditions may restrict operations. Hurricanes impose the most severe weather hazard. The hurricane season, from June through October, normally requires at least one mass evacuation of all offshore platforms.

Gulf of Mexico Helicopter Offshore System Technologies Recommended Development Path

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Advanced Air Transportation Technologies (AATT) project in cooperation with the Department of Transportation (DOT) Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (VNTSC) contracted with the System Resources Corporation (SRC) for the evaluation of the existing environment and the identification of user and service provider needs in the Gulf of Mexico low-altitude Offshore Sector. The results of this contractor activity are reported in the Gulf of Mexico Helicopter Offshore System Technologies Engineering Needs Assessment. A recommended system design and transition strategy was then developed to satisfy the identified needs within the constraints of the environment. This work, also performed under contract to NASA, is the subject of this report.

Formally Verified Practical Algorithms for Recovery from Loss of Separation

In this paper, we develop and formally verify practical algorithms for recovery from loss of separation. The formal verification is performed in the context of a criteria-based framework. This framework provides rigorous definitions of horizontal and vertical maneuver correctness that guarantee divergence and achieve horizontal and vertical separation. The algorithms are shown to be independently correct, that is, separation is achieved when only one aircraft maneuvers, and implicitly coordinated, that is, separation is also achieved when both aircraft maneuver. In this paper we improve the horizontal criteria over our previous work. An important benefit of the criteria approach is that different aircraft can execute different algorithms and implicit coordination will still be achieved, as long as they all meet the explicit criteria of the framework. Towards this end we have sought to make the criteria as general as possible. The framework presented in this paper has been formalized and mechanically verified in the Prototype Verification System (PVS).

Remote Detection Sodium Cell Magnetometry Using Amplitude Modulated Light

We have investigated the performance of a remote-detection sodium cell magnetometer using synchronous optical pumping with amplitude modulated light. The magnetometer is used to measure ambient geomagnetic field with high-sensitivity using backscattered resonance fluorescence.
