Radar observations of the migratory habits of passerine birds over a 10 year period are presented. The relationships between intensity of cloud cover and the frequency and density of migration are illustrated. The aspects of migration which were determined by the radar were: (1) migration under total overcast, (2) compensation for wind drift, (3) changes in flight direction during migration, and (4) effects of meteorological parameters.
An attempt has been made to chemically characterize the basalts from four islands, Rhum, Eigg, Canna, and Muck that, together with Skye, comprise the Inner Hebrides. The basalts are shown to be chemically distinct from tertiary basalts described from the Faroes and Iceland, but have the low concentrations of Rb, Sr found in some mildly alkaline basalts dredged from the Atlantic. Possible evolution of these rocks is discussed.
The ERTS-1 color composite picture of the Vancouver-Victoria region illustrates the value of ERTS data for coastal oceanography. The water of the Fraser River plume which is so clearly visible in the center of the scene has been of interest to oceanographers on the west coast of Canada for a long time as an easily visible tracer of surface water circulation in the strait of Georgia. Maps of the plume at different states of the tide and with different river flow and weather were compiled from oblique aerial photographs in 1950 and used in the siting of sewage and other outfalls in the Vancouver area. More recently high level aerial photomosaics have been used to map the plume area, but the plume can spread over distances of 30 to 40 miles and many photographs, with the uneven illumination inherent in wide angle coverage, are needed for the mosaic. The ERTS satellite gives the first complete view of the plume area. Electronic enhancement of the images shows that the satellite's narrow angle coverage allows very weak surface turbidity features to be made visible to give information on surface currents over a wide area.
The use of the Timation satellite for navigation purposes is discussed. The advantages of the satellite for navigation and time transfer are defined as: (1) well-known position, (2) line-of-sight signal which allows use of ultrahigh frequency signals, (3) worldwide coverage, and (4) celestial navigation solution similar to the conventional celestial navigation practices. A diagram of range measurement by phase measure is provided. The application of an intercept chart for determining position using the navigation satellite is demonstrated. The results of a ground based time transfer experiment are reported.

The CAD/CAM interactive computer graphics system was described; uses to which it has been put were shown, and current developments of the system were outlined. The system supports batch, time sharing, and fully interactive graphic processing. Engineers using the system may switch between these methods of data processing and problem solving to make the best use of the available resources. It is concluded that the introduction of on-line computing in the form of teletypes, storage tubes, and fully interactive graphics has resulted in large increases in productivity and reduced timescales in the geometric computing, numerical lofting and part programming areas, together with a greater utilization of the system in the technical departments.
The author has identified the following significant results. This stage of the study has confirmed the initial supposition that LANDSAT data could be analyzed to provide useful data on cloud amount, and that useful light would be thrown thereby on the performance of the ground observer of this aspect of the state of the sky. This study, in comparison with previous studies of a similar nature using data from meteorological satellites, has benefited greatly from the much higher resolution data provided by LANDSAT. This has permitted consideration of not only the overall performance of the surface observer in estimating total cloud cover, but also his performance under different sky conditions.

The author has identified the following significant results. It was demonstrated that satellites with sufficiently high resolution capability in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum could be used to check the accuracy of estimates of total cloud amount assessed subjectively from the ground, and to reveal areas of performance in which corrections should be made. It was also demonstrated that, in middle latitude in summer, cloud shadow may obscure at least half as much again of the land surface covered by an individual LANDSAT frame as the cloud itself. That proportion would increase with latitude and/or time of year towards the winter solstice. Analyses of sample multispectral images for six different categories of clouds in summer revealed marked differences between the reflectance characteristics of cloud fields in the visible/near infrared region of the spectrum.
