Bipolar nebulae and mass loss from red giant stars

Observations of several bipolar nebulae are used to learn something of the nature of mass loss from the probable red-giant progenitors of these nebulae. Phenomena discussed are: (1) probable GL 2688's optical molecular emissions; (2) newly discovered very high velocity knots along the axis of OH 0739 - 14, which reveal evidence for mass ejections of + or 300 km/s from the M9 III star embedded in this nebula; (3) the bipolar structure of three extreme carbon stars, and the evidence for periodic mass ejection in IRC + 30219, also at high speed (about 80 km/s); and (4) the curious cool TiO-rich region above Parsamian 13, which may represent the very recent shedding of photospheric material from a cool, oxygen-rich giant. Several general key questions about bipolar nebulae that relate to the process of mass loss from their progenitor stars are raised.

SEU In An Advanced Bipolar Integrated Circuit

Report summarizes investigation of single-event upsets (SEU) in bipolar integrated-circuit set of flip-flops (memory cells). Device tested made by advanced digital bipolar silicon process of Honeywell, Inc. Circuit chip contained 4 cells. Construction enabled study of effect of size on SEU behavior. Each cell externally biased so effect of bias current on SEU behavior. Results of study provides important information for optimal design of devices fabricated using buried-layer bipolar process operating in heavy-ion SEU environments. Designers use information to provide required levels of suppression of SEU in specific applications via combinations of size and/or cell-current scaling.

Characterization testing of a 40 Ahr bipolar nickel hydrogen battery

In a continuing effort to develop NiH2 bipolar technology to a point where it can be used efficiently in space flight, testing of a second 40 Ahr, 10-cell bipolar battery has begun. This battery has undergone extensive characterization testing to determine the effects of such operating parameters as charge and discharge rates, temperature, and pressure. The fundamental design of this actively cooled bipolar battery is the same as the first battery. Most of the individual components, however, are from different manufacturers. Different testing procedures as well as certain unique battery characteristics make it difficult to directly compare the two sets of results. In general, the performance of this battery throughout characterization produced expected results. The main differences seen between the first and second batteries occurred during the high-rate discharge portion of the test matrix. The first battery also had poor high-rate discharge results, although better than those of the second battery. Minor changes were made to the battery frame design used for the first battery in an attempt to allow better gas access to the reaction sites for the second build and hopefully improve performance. The changes, however, did not improve the performance of the second battery and could have possibly contributed to the poorer performance that was observed. There are other component differences that could have contributed to the poorer performance of the second battery. The H2 electrode in the second battery was constructed with a Goretex backing which could have limited the high-rate current flow. The gas screen in the second battery had a larger mesh which again could have limited the high-rate current flow. Small scale 2 x 2 batteries are being tested to evaluate the effects of the component variations.

Bipolar Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery Being Developed

The NASA Lewis Research Center has contracted with Electro Energy, Inc., to develop a bipolar nickel-metal hydride battery design for energy storage on low-Earth-orbit satellites. The objective of the bipolar nickel-metal hydride battery development program is to approach advanced battery development from a systems level while incorporating technology advances from the lightweight nickel electrode field, hydride development, and design developments from nickel-hydrogen systems. This will result in a low-volume, simplified, less-expensive battery system that is ideal for small spacecraft applications. The goals of the program are to develop a 1-kilowatt, 28-volt (V), bipolar nickel-metal hydride battery with a specific energy of 100 watt-hours per kilogram (W-hr/kg), an energy density of 250 W-hr/liter and a 5-year life in low Earth orbit at 40-percent depth-of-discharge.

A Massive Bipolar Outflow and a Dusty Torus with Large Grains in the Preplanetary Nebula IRAS 22036+5306

We report high angular resolution (approx.1") CO J=3-2 interferometric mapping using the Submillimeter Array (SMA) of IRAS 22036+5306 (I22036), a bipolar preplanetary nebula (PPN) with knotty jets discovered in our HST snapshot survey of young PPNs. In addition, we have obtained supporting lower resolution (approx.10") CO and 13CO J=1-0 observations with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) interferometer, as well as optical long-slit echelle spectra at the Palomar Observatory. The CO J=3-2 observations show the presence of a very fast (approx.220 km/s), highly collimated, massive (0.03 Solar Mass) bipolar outflow with a very large scalar momentum (about 10(exp 39) g cm/s), and the characteristic spatiokinematic structure of bow shocks at the tips of this outflow. The H(alpha) line shows an absorption feature blueshifted from the systemic velocity by approx.100 km/s, which most likely arises in neutral interface material between the fast outflow and the dense walls of the bipolar lobes at low latitudes. The fast outflow in I22036, as in most PPNs, cannot be driven by radiation pressure. We find an unresolved source of submillimeter (and millimeter-wave) continuum emission in I22036, implying a very substantial mass (0.02-0.04 Solar Mass) of large (radius > or approx.1 mm), cold (< or approx.50 K) dust grains associated with I22036's toroidal waist. We also find that the C-13/C-12 ratio in I22036 is very high (0.16), close to the maximum value achieved in equilibrium CNO nucleosynthesis (0.33). The combination of the high circumstellar mass (i.e., in the extended dust shell and the torus) and the high C-13/C-12 ratio in I22036 provides strong support for this object having evolved from a massive (> or approx.4 Solar Mass) progenitor in which hot-bottom-burning has occurred.

Imer-product array processor for retrieval of stored images represented by bipolar binary (+1,-1) pixels using partial input trinary pixels represented by (+1,-1)

An inner-product array processor is provided with thresholding of the inner product during each iteration to make more significant the inner product employed in estimating a vector to be used as the input vector for the next iteration. While stored vectors and estimated vectors are represented in bipolar binary (1,-1), only those elements of an initial partial input vector that are believed to be common with those of a stored vector are represented in bipolar binary; the remaining elements of a partial input vector are set to 0. This mode of representation, in which the known elements of a partial input vector are in bipolar binary form and the remaining elements are set equal to 0, is referred to as trinary representation. The initial inner products corresponding to the partial input vector will then be equal to the number of known elements. Inner-product thresholding is applied to accelerate convergence and to avoid convergence to a negative input product.

The impact of hydrogen contamination on the Total Dose Response of Linear Bipolar Microcircuits

Recent enhanced low dose rate sensitivity (ELDRS) investigations carried out by RLP Research, Crane, Arizona State University (ASU), and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have shown significant differences in the degradation of bipolar microcircuits with total dose in the presence of molecular hydrogen (H2) in packages. This has a significant impact on radiation hardness assurance and opens up opportunity to improve device performance. The objectives of this program are 1) to investigate and confirm the causal relationship between packaging recipes, hydrogen contamination, and total dose response of linear bipolar microcircuits; and 2) to develop a guideline that will take into account these effects at the radiation level for future NASA space missions. This program is geared to benefit all future NASA space missions using bipolar or BiCMOS linear devices.

Understanding how molecular hydrogen impacts the total dose and dose rate response of linear bipolar circuits

Recent Enhanced Low Dose Rate Sensitivity (ELDRS) investigations carried out by RLP Research, Arizona State University (ASU) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have shown significant differences in the degradation of bipolar micro-circuits with total dose in the presence of molecular hydrogen (H2) in packages. This has a significant impact on radiation hardness assurance and opens up opportunities to improve device performance. The general objectives of this program are to: 1. Determine the extent to which hydrogen contamination affects the total dose and dose rate response of linear bipolar circuits; 2. Develop a model that will enable the prediction of high dose rate (HDR) and low dose rate (LDR) response asymptotes and transition dose rates as a function of total dose, temperature, pressurized hydrogen, defect precursors, and other process dependent variables; 3. Explore the possibility of an accelerated hardness assurance method and possible hardening approaches; and 4. Extend the work to other technologies that have total dose response affected by hydrogen contamination. In this document, we xperimentally demonstrate with test transistors and circuits that hydrogen is correlated with ELDRS in bipolar linear circuits. We show that the amount of hydrogen determines: 1) the total dose response versus dose rate and 2) the transition dose rates between the high and low dose rate responses. The experimental results are supported with a steady state drift/diffusion analytical model as well as modeling calculations using COMSOL Multiphysics.

Progress in three-terminal heterojunction bipolar transistor solar cells

Conventional solar cells, including multijunction solar cells, are based on pn junctions as building blocks. In contrast, the three-terminal heterojunction bipolar transistor solar cell (3T-HBTSC) explores the use of a bipolar transistor structure to build a solar cell. The limiting efficiency of this transistor structure equals that of a double-junction solar cell. However, since the 3T-HBTSC does not require tunnel junctions, its minimal structure has only three semiconductor layers, while the minimal structure of a double junction solar cell has six. This work reviews the operation principles of this solar cell and the steps carried out towards its practical implementation. Experimental results on a GaInP/GaAs HBTSC prototype with bottom interdigitated contacts are presented.

Bipolar transport in diamond under photo-excitation: Evidence of free charge scattering by excitons

The fundamental characteristics of the Coulomb e-h interactions in ultra-pure diamond are investigated through time-resolved photoconductivity measurements in homogeneously photoexcited samples with ohmic-like low resistive B + sandwich contacts. Here, we demonstrate that, in the electric field, the bipolar charge mobility exhibits drastic reduction for photo-injected densities of 10 14 ‐10 16 cm ‐3 that cannot be explained only by mutual scattering between free e-h particles. This phenomenon is clarified by adding scattering caused by excitons whose density grows in the photo-exited system. The comparison of drift mobilities at 300 K in diamond obtained in this study and in pure Si and Ge obtained from literature, where exciton scattering is insignificant, is presented. We derive the empirical expression for the density dependences of bipolar mobility for the electric fields up to 1 kV/cm that could be useful for the development of diamond electronic devices.

Pyromellitic diimide based bipolar molecule for total organic symmetric redox flow battery

Non-aqueous redox flow batteries based on total organic electrolytes, consisting of earth-abundant elements, i.e., C, H, N, O, are regarded as a promising technology for sustainable and large-scale energy storage. In particular, bipolar redox-active organic materials (BROMs) are distinctly fascinating as electroactive species because they have multiple oxidation states and can undergo multiple redox processes. By virtue of this unique characteristic, BROMs can be utilized as both anolyte and catholyte in symmetric flow batteries, consequently, helping alleviate cross-contamination issues. Here, in this paper, we report an all-organic symmetric redox flow battery based on diimide molecule as a bipolar electroactive material. The potential interval between the cathodic peak and the inner and outer anodic peaks led to a promising cell voltage of 2.22 V. The symmetric battery can be operated at a current density of 20 mA cm -2 , with a coulombic efficiency of 90% for over 100 cycles. This work proposes an alternative approach to designing multi-electron organic redox active materials to facilitate the advancement of high-density symmetric flow batteries.

Neutralization Short-Circuiting with Weak Electrolytes Erodes the Efficiency of Bipolar Membranes

Bipolar membranes (BPMs) are critical components of a variety of electrochemical energy technologies. Many electrochemical applications require the use of buffers to maintain stable, nonextreme pH environments, yet the impact of buffers or weak acids/bases on the electrochemical behavior of BPMs remains poorly understood. Here, our data for a cell containing weak electrolytes is consistent with internal pH gradients within the anion exchange membrane (AEM) or cation exchange membrane (CEM) component of the BPM that form via ionic short-circuiting processes at open-circuit. Short-circuiting results from the coupling of co-ion crossover and parasitic neutralization and leads to buffering of the bipolar interface. This phenomenon, which we term neutralization short-circuiting, serves to erode BPM efficiency by attenuating the open-circuit membrane voltage and introducing parasitic reverse bias currents associated with weak acid/base dissociation at the interface. These findings establish a mechanistic basis for the operation of BPM cells in the presence of weak acid/base electrolytes.
