Cassini VIMS Preliminary Exploration of Titan's Surface Hemispheric Albedo Dichotomy

We present preliminary evidence that suggests a hemispheric albedo dichotomy on Titan, the largest planetary satellite in the Solar System. We have also studied the photometric properties of several dark circular features on Titan's surface to test if they might be of impact origin. The evidence is derived from photometric analysis of selected surface regions taken at different Titanian longitudes and solar phase angles using images from the Cassini Saturn Orbiter Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS). The VIMS instrument is able to image Titan's surface at spectral windows (e.g. 2.02 microns) in its atmosphere where methane, the principal atmospheric absorber is transparent. Additional information is included in the original extended abstract.

Clay Bearing Units in the Region around Mawrth Vallis: Stratigraphy, Extent, and Possible Alteration Fronts

The largest exposure of phyllosilicates on Mars occurs on the highland plains around Mawrth Vallis. This exposure extends for about 300 km southward from the edge of the dichotomy boundary, covering an area greater than 200 x 300 kilometers over an elevation range of approximately 2000 meters. At least two different types of hydrated phyllosilicates (Fe/Mg-rich and Al-rich phyllosilicates) have been identified in OMEGA data based on absorption bands near 2.3 and 2.2 micrometers, respectively. These clay-bearing units are associated with layered, indurated light-toned units with complex spatial and stratigraphic relationships, and are unconfomably overlain by a darker, indurated, more heavily cratered unit. Ongoing analysis of OMEGA (approximately 1 kilometer/pixel) and CRISM multi-spectral (MSP, 200 meters/pixel) data reveal hydrated minerals with absorptions at approximately 2.2 or 2.3 micrometers in locations up to 300 kilometers away from the borders of the previously identified extent of clay-bearing units. We seek to: 1) further constrain the mineralogy of the hydrated species identified in [5], and 2) understand spatial and stratigraphic relationships between the different hydrated minerals and the cratered plains units in which they are found. In this work we perform mineralogical and stratigraphic comparisons between units to test whether these extended units may be related, in order to establish a broad zone of alteration.

Mars Express: The Exploration of Phobos

The origin, structure and composition of Phobos are essentially still unresolved issue, with major outcomes for understanding the origin and evolution of the Solar system, and of the Mars system. Several missions have been designed with this unique body the only target. Is Phobos a captured small body (and in this case, can we identify the degree of differentiation such a small object has undergone ?), or is there any co-generic process with Mars involved ? Are there still volatile species trapped, and if so where, and in what form ? What are the reciprocal contributions of Mars and Phobos material accreted in the other body? The number of key clues for deciphering the early solar system processes, the Mars-Phobos binary evolution, and the role Phobos could play in the future of Mars exploration (including human expeditions), are numerous, and exciting for a large community. Part of the answers are in the high resolution coverage of this object (optical and IR, for composition variation), and in its full spectral analysis, from UV to thermal IR : Mars Express is the unique mission to provide this opportunity, and orbit 756, August 22, a totally unique opportunity to approach Phobos so closely. OMEGA should provide all across Stickney, the deepest accessible material, and over more than 20 km along, a spatial resolution less than 200 m, and assess the composition (and possibly their variations) wrt silicates (mafic materials), oxides, and eventually hydrated minerals and organics. By no means we should miss this opportunity: no one would understand the rationale not to turn the instruments ON while so close, and pointing them towards the Phobos surface.

The Atmospheres of Saturn and Titan in the Near-Infrared: First Results of Cassini/VIMS

The wide spectral coverage and extensive spatial, temporal, and phase-angle mapping capabilities of the Visual Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) onboard the Cassini-Huygens Orbiter are producing fundamental new insights into the nature of the atmospheres of Saturn and Titan. For both bodies, VIMS maps over time and solar phase angles provide information for a multitude of atmospheric constituents and aerosol layers, providing new insights into atmospheric structure and dynamical and chemical processes. For Saturn, salient early results include evidence for phosphine depletion in relatively dark and less cloudy belts at temperate and mid-latitudes compared to the relatively bright and cloudier Equatorial Region, consistent with traditional theories of belts being regions of relative downwelling. Additional Saturn results include (1) the mapping of enhanced trace gas absorptions at the south pole, and (2) the first high phase-angle, high-spatial-resolution imagery of CH4 fluorescence. An additional fundamental new result is the first nighttime near-infrared mapping of Saturn, clearly showing discrete meteorological features relatively deep in the atmosphere beneath the planet's sunlit haze and cloud layers, thus revealing a new dynamical regime at depth where vertical dynamics is relatively more important than zonal dynamics in determining cloud morphology. Zonal wind measurements at deeper levels than previously available are achieved by tracking these features over multiple days, thereby providing measurements of zonal wind shears within Saturn's troposphere when compared to cloudtop movements measured in reflected sunlight. For Titan, initial results include (1) the first detection and mapping of thermal emission spectra of CO, CO2, and CH3D on Titan's nightside limb, (2) the mapping of CH4 fluorescence over the dayside bright limb, extending to approximately 750 km altitude, (3) wind measurements of approximately 0.5 ms(exp -1), favoring prograde, from the movement of a persistent (multiple months) south polar cloud near 88 deg S latitude, and (4) the imaging of two transient mid-southern-latitude cloud features.

Thermally Altered Subsurface Material of Asteroid 162173 Ryugu

Studies of meteorite analysis and theoretical modeling have indicated the possibility that some carbonaceous near-Earth asteroids are thermally altered due to radiative heating during close approaches to the Sun in addition to parent body processes (Nakamura, 2005; Marchi et al., 2009; Chaumard et al., 2012). In April 2019, the Hayabusa2 mission successfully completed an artificial impact experiment on the carbonaceous near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu (Arakawa et al., 2020), which provided an opportunity to investigate the effects of radiative heating through the exposed subsurface material. Here we report observations of the Ryugu’s subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Spectra of the subsurface material exhibit a slightly stronger and peak-shifted hydroxyl absorption feature compared to that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating caused a subtle change in the spectrum of Ryugu surface. However, the shape of the absorption feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 ˚C similar to the surface. In contrast, our thermal modeling shows that radiative heating does not increase the subsurface temperature at 1 m depth above 200 ˚C even if the semimajor axis is reduced down to 0.344 au. This supports that the Ryugu material would have been preferentially altered due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on the parent body rather than radiative heating.
