Theoretical study of the spectroscopy of NO(+)

The spectroscopy of the NO(+) molecule has been studied using multireference configuration-interaction calculations. The peak at 21.7 eV in the photoelectron spectrum of NO is assigned to the (2) 3Pi state (c 3Pi) and the vibrational progression centered at 23.1 eV is assigned to the diabatic (3) 1Pi state (B 1Pi). Several additional bound states with binding energies in excess of 1 eV are characterized in the present work. Radiative lifetimes are presented for many of the states.

Excitation of He/+/ by electron impact

A five-state close-coupling approximation, in which the exact He(+) bound states 1s, 2s, and 2p are retained along with 3s and 3p pseudostates, is employed to calculate 1s-to-2s and 1s-to-2p excitation of He(+) by electron impact in the energy range 61.2-136 eV. The inclusion of pseudostates is to allow in some average manner for the infinity of bound and continuum states that are neglected in a truncated close-coupling expansion. The pseudostates are constructed orthonormal to lower states of the same symmetry, and they have the same threshold energy of 0.2 Ry. The inclusion of pseudostates reduces considerably the excitation cross section, yielding better agreement with measurements.

Calculation of a mirror asymmetric effect in electron scattering from chiral targets

A dynamical calculation is presented of the helicity induced in an initially unpolarized electron beam after elastic scattering from an optically active medium, a process analogous to the circular polarization induced in unpolarized light following Rayleigh scattering from chiral targets. The calculation is based on the bound helical electron model of a chiral molecule, according to which the major contribution to the helicity is provided by the perturbation of the electron bound state by the spin-orbit interaction of the bound electrons moving in the electric field of the molecular core. The net helicity acquired is found to depend directly on a molecular asymmetry factor and the square of the atomic number of the heaviest atom in an asymmetric environment. For the case of carbon, the induced helicity is on the order of 0.00001, which would account for its lack of observation in a recent experiment. Results may have implications for the origin of optical activity in biological molecules by the differential ionization of D and L isomers by beta-decay electrons.

Harmonic oscillator representation in the theory of scattering and nuclear reactions

The following questions, concerning the application of the harmonic oscillator representation (HOR) in the theory of scattering and reactions, are discussed: the formulation of the scattering theory in HOR; exact solutions of the free motion Schroedinger equation in HOR; separable expansion of the short range potentials and the calculation of the phase shifts; 'isolated states' as generalization of the Wigner-von Neumann bound states embedded in continuum; a nuclear coupled channel problem in HOR; and the description of true three body scattering in HOR. As an illustration the soft dipole mode in the (11)Li nucleus is considered in a frame of the (9)Li+n+n cluster model taking into account of three body continuum effects.

A new effect in the depolarization of resonant light scattering from molecules in the vapor phase: I2

Theoretical discussions of the depolarization ratios in two types of resonance processes are given. These processes are discrete state resonance fluorescence, and Raman scattering when the resonance is between a bound state and evanescent-dissociative states. Theory predicts a dramatic difference for these two cases due to a quantum mechanical phase cancellation in the case of virtual dissociative states. The predictions have been verified experimentally.

Explicit Hilbert-space representations of atomic and molecular photoabsorption spectra - Computational studies of Stieltjes-Tchebycheff functions

Computational methods are reported for construction of discrete and continuum Schroedinger states in atoms and molecules employing explicit Hilbert space procedures familiar from bound state studies. As theoretical development, the Schroedinger problem of interest is described, the Cauchy-Lanczos bases and orthonormal polynomials used in constructing L-squared Stieltjes-Tchebycheff (ST) approximations to the discrete and continuum states are defined, and certain properties of these functions are indicated. Advantages and limitations of the ST approach to spectral studies relative to more conventional calculations are discussed, and aspects of the approach in single-channel approximations to larger molecules are described. Procedures are indicated for construction of photoejection anisotropies and for performing coupled-channel calculations employing the ST formalism. Finally, explicit descriptive intercomparisons are made of the nature and diagnostic value of ST functions with more conventional scattering functions.

Ab initio studies of low-lying 3Sigma(-), 3Pi, and 5Sigma(-) states of NH. I - Potential curves and dipole moment functions

Configuration interaction wave functions, potential energy curves, and dipole moment functions have been calculated for the four lowest 3Sigma(-) and the three lowest 3Pi states and 5Sigma(-) states of NH. The electronic wave functions were constructed to give a balanced description of valence-Rydberg interactions. Two repulsive states have been identified as important photodissociation pathways. Spectroscopic constants are presented for the bound states, and results are compared to other theoretical and experimental work. The possible predissociation of the A 3Pi state by the 1 5Sigma(-) state is discussed.

Photoionization from excited states of helium

The cross sections for photoionization from the 2 1S, 2 3S, 2 1P and 2 3P excited states of helium are calculated for photoelectron energies below the n = 2 threshold of He(+) using Hylleraas bound state wave functions and 1s-2s-2p close coupling final state wave functions. The resonant structures associated with the lowest-lying 1S, 1P, 3P, and 1D autoionizing states of helium are found to be characterized by large values of the line profile parameter q. The cross sections and the photoelectron angular distribution asymmetry parameters for the P-states are calculated for various polarization states of the target atom and the incident photon. Experiments which would lead to the separate determinations of the S- and D- wave partial photoionization cross sections are discussed.

Use of the Wigner representation in scattering problems

The basic equations of quantum scattering were translated into the Wigner representation, putting quantum mechanics in the form of a stochastic process in phase space, with real valued probability distributions and source functions. The interpretative picture associated with this representation is developed and stressed and results used in applications published elsewhere are derived. The form of the integral equation for scattering as well as its multiple scattering expansion in this representation are derived. Quantum corrections to classical propagators are briefly discussed. The basic approximation used in the Monte-Carlo method is derived in a fashion which allows for future refinement and which includes bound state production. Finally, as a simple illustration of some of the formalism, scattering is treated by a bound two body problem. Simple expressions for single and double scattering contributions to total and differential cross-sections as well as for all necessary shadow corrections are obtained.

Two-body problem in a many-particle system

The energy and wave functions of two-particle states in a dense plasma are essentially influenced by the surrounding medium. However, the two-particle bound-state energies may remain unshifted over a large density interval. Two simple examples are given to demonstrate the compensation of many-particle effects such as the self-energy and effective two-particle potentials in hydrogen plasmas. Neglecting self-energy and Pauli blocking, energy values that follow from numerical solutions of the Schroedinger equation with a Debye potential are obtained.

Saha equation, single and two particle states

Single- and two-particle properties in a dense plasma are discussed in connection with their role in the mass action law for a partially ionized plasma. The two-particle-bound states are nearly density independent, while the continuum is essentially shifted. The single-particle states are damped, and their energy has a negative shift and a parabolic behavior for small momenta.

The low-lying electronic states of LiC

The spectroscopic constants for the doublet and quartet states of LiC below about 30,000/cm are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction approach in conjunction with a [6s 5p 3d 2f] atomic natural orbital basis sets. All of the strongly bound states, X(sup 4)(SIGMA)(sup -),(1)(sup 2)(DELTA), (1)(sup 2)(SIGMA)(sup +), and (2)(sup 2) II, very ionic in character. The only bound-bound quartet transition in this energy range is (2)(sup 4)SIGMA(sup -) and Franck-Condon factors, Einstein A values, and lifetimes are reported for this transition.

On the periodicity of symbolic observations of piecewise smooth discrete-time systems

A study is made of the behavior of discrete-time systems composed of a set of smooth transition maps coupled by a quantized feedback function. The feedback function partitions the state space into disjoint regions and assigns a smooth transition function to each region. The main result is that under a constraint on the norm of the derivative of the transition maps, a bounded state trajectory with limit points in the interior of the switching regions leads to a region index sequence that is eventually periodic. Under these assumptions, it is shown that eventually the feedback function is determined by a finite state automaton. A similar result is proved in the case of finite state dynamic feedback.

The equation of state for stellar envelopes. II - Algorithm and selected results

A free-energy-minimization method for computing the dissociation and ionization equilibrium of a multicomponent gas is discussed. The adopted free energy includes terms representing the translational free energy of atoms, ions, and molecules; the internal free energy of particles with excited states; the free energy of a partially degenerate electron gas; and the configurational free energy from shielded Coulomb interactions among charged particles. Internal partition functions are truncated using an occupation probability formalism that accounts for perturbations of bound states by both neutral and charged perturbers. The entire theory is analytical and differentiable to all orders, so it is possible to write explicit analytical formulas for all derivatives required in a Newton-Raphson iteration; these are presented to facilitate future work. Some representative results for both Saha and free-energy-minimization equilibria are presented for a hydrogen-helium plasma with N(He)/N(H) = 0.10. These illustrate nicely the phenomena of pressure dissociation and ionization, and also demonstrate vividly the importance of choosing a reliable cutoff procedure for internal partition functions.

Delta excitations and shell-model information in heavy-ion, charge-exchange reactions

We calculate total cross sections for coherent pion production using localized plane-wave approximations for the shell-structure of valence nucleons that are excited to delta particles in the intermediate state in the (12C, 12B) and (12C, 12N) charge-exchange, heavy-ion reactions. We find comparable agreement to projectile downshift data for 12C(12C, 12B)12N. Then we improve the formalism by replacing the localized plane wave bound states with harmonic oscillator states which are imbedded in a multipole expansion approach and calculate pion differential cross sections to test for the sensitivity of the spectra to the single-particle mass parameter.

Resonant tunneling through mixed quasibound states in a triple-well structure

A triple-well resonant-tunneling structure made from the In(0.53)Ga(0.47)As/AlAs material system yields a broad negative differential resistance (NDR) region without the precipitous drop in current that occurs in single-well structures. This NDR characteristic is attributed to resonant tunneling through mixed quasi-bound states. A diode made from this structure is used to generate a nearly constant power of 0.5 mW up to 16 GHz.
