Wireless Augmented Reality Communication System
The system of the present invention is a highly integrated radio communication system with a multimedia co-processor which allows true two-way multimedia (video, audio, data) access as well as real-time biomedical monitoring in a pager-sized portable access unit. The system is integrated in a network structure including one or more general purpose nodes for providing a wireless-to-wired interface. The network architecture allows video, audio and data (including biomedical data) streams to be connected directly to external users and devices. The portable access units may also be mated to various non-personal devices such as cameras or environmental sensors for providing a method for setting up wireless sensor nets from which reported data may be accessed through the portable access unit. The reported data may alternatively be automatically logged at a remote computer for access and viewing through a portable access unit, including the user's own.

Wireless Augmented Reality Communication System
A portable unit is for video communication to select a user name in a user name network. A transceiver wirelessly accesses a communication network through a wireless connection to a general purpose node coupled to the communication network. A user interface can receive user input to log on to a user name network through the communication network. The user name network has a plurality of user names, at least one of the plurality of user names is associated with a remote portable unit, logged on to the user name network and available for video communication.

Autonomous Diagnostic Imaging Performed by Untrained Operators using Augmented Reality as a Form of "Just-in-Time" Training
We will address the Human Factors and Performance Team, "Risk of performance errors due to training deficiencies" by improving the JIT training materials for ultrasound and OCT imaging by providing advanced guidance in a detailed, timely, and user-friendly manner. Specifically, we will (1) develop an audio-visual tutorial using AR that guides non-experts through an abdominal trauma ultrasound protocol; (2) develop an audio-visual tutorial using AR to guide an untrained operator through the acquisition of OCT images; (3) evaluate the quality of abdominal ultrasound and OCT images acquired by untrained operators using AR guidance compared to images acquired using traditional JIT techniques (laptop-based training conducted before image acquisition); and (4) compare the time required to complete imaging studies using AR tutorials with images acquired using current JIT practices to identify areas for time efficiency improvements. Two groups of subjects will be recruited to participate in this study. Operator-subjects, without previous experience in ultrasound or OCT, will be asked to perform both procedures using either the JIT training with AR technology or the traditional JIT training via laptop. Images acquired by inexperienced operator-subjects will be scored by experts in that imaging modality for diagnostic and research quality; experts will be blinded to the form of JIT used to acquire the images. Operator-subjects also will be asked to submit feedback to improve the training modules used during the scans to improve future training modules. Scanned-subjects will be a small group individuals from whom all images will be acquired.

Enhancing Situation Awareness of Automated Procedures Using Adaptive Multimodal Augmented Reality Displays
In future missions, crew must be more autonomous and perform tasks with limited help from MCC. Virtual Intelligent Task Assistant (VITA) will stand-in for MCC and help crew perform tasks. Prepare for and perform manual tasks to increase efficiency and accuracy. Take over partially completed task by summarizing progress made so far, and reviewing remaining tasks. Maintain situation awareness of ongoing automated procedures while crew is performing manual tasks.

Developing Extended Reality Projects in Support of Design, Fabrication and Procedure
The goal of this internship was to improve and create virtual reality simulations and visualizations for use in parallel with the design, fabrication, and analysis of flight ready hardware for areas like the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) and also Space Systems. Specifically, my work was done in the XRSpace lab at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) with assistance directly and indirectly from workers at KSC, JSC and LaRC. Led by David Reynolds, the XRSpace lab develops products for various entities at NASA. The work done in the XRSpace lab focuses on Extended Reality (XR) solutions for both simulations and visualization capabilities. The goal of the lab is to support the larger systems of NASA and to help find ways that XR technologies can streamline and optimize the design process. Extended Reality is an umbrella term that encompasses Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality. In this capacity, I was able to complete several elements in the design, building, testing, and deployment for a variety of immersive experiences, including a VR procedure simulation, visualization aids, and a 360-image capture tool.
Human Systems Intergration & Engineering: HSI & E Design Influence
The design of space systems is a long and complicated process where changes to the design increase cost and schedule as the design progresses into implementation. Human Systems Integration uses tools such as mockups, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and human simulations early in the design process to evaluate designs for usability, operability, and maintainability. This early design influence provides cost and schedule savings during manufacturing and operations. Examples of how MSFC EV74 Human Systems Integration Team have used these tools to evaluate hardware designs will be discussed.
