Impact of Spatial Variation in Flexibility on System Operations in Electric Power Systems

With the expansion of renewable energy resources in the electric power systems, having flexibility in the setup will allow to maintain the system's reliability and prevailing operations. Such flexibility can be extracted from utility operated and/or consumer owned devices, such as, storage devices, electric vehicles, etc. For the demand side, generally consumer preferences, incentives, etc. enact on the availability of the flexibility; besides, both the spatial and temporal dimension dictates the degree of the flexibility. Consequently, the optimal dispatch of the grid resources might appear intractable as the considerable amount of flexibility are obliquely stemming from the ungovernable consumer devices. Thus characterizing the consequences of diverged feasible flexibility in the system is crucial for operations. In this paper, a procedure is developed to quantify the degree of flexibility of power systems in terms of resource dispatch reconfiguration. Specifically, we develop optimization problems to attain equivalent resource configurations for the power systems to evaluate the spatial volatility of the network and asses the flexibility of the system. The developed process is then validated using numerical simulations for IEEE-30 bus test system.

Concordance

Dimension reduction techniques have long been an important topic in statistics, and active subspaces (AS) have received much attention this past decade in the computer experiments literature. The most common approach towards estimating the AS is to use Monte Carlo with numerical gradient evaluation. This software takes a new approach towards estimating the active subspace, in which Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) is used as a surrogate model, and relevant calculation are obtained analytically. Using a MARS surrogate has many advantages including improved scaling, better estimation of active subspaces in high dimensions and the ability to handle a large number of prior distributions in closed form. This software is also capable of conducting a so-called "concordance analysis", using a generalization of ASs which we refer to as "Co-Active" subspaces.

Utah FORGE Hydrothermal Friction-Hydraulic Transmissivity Laboratory Experiments

Submission includes data from laboratory slide-hold-slide tests, combined with flow through tests, conducted on Westerly granite with 30 degree sawcut. Tests were conducted with a constant confining pressure of 30 MPa with an average pore pressure of 10 MPa at temperatures of 23 and 200 degC. Three fluid flow conditions were examined (1) no flow, (2) cycled flow, and (3) continuous flow. Data were collected to asses the effect of temperature and pore fluid on frictional healing rates in granite at geothermal conditions. Data is available in XML and JSON data types.

Assessing Low-Temperature Geothermal Play Types: Relevant Data and Play Fairway Analysis Methods

This data catalog contains information on low temperature geothermal play types. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) supports the Geothermal Heating and Cooling Geospatial Datasets and Analysis project, conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This project is part of a broader effort to demonstrate the multifaceted value of integrating geothermal power and geothermal heating and cooling technologies into national decarbonization strategies and community energy plans. There is a need to establish baseline low-temperature geothermal resource data sets and evaluate methods for deploying these technologies. This project aims to reduce exploration risk of low temperature geothermal systems by collecting baseline datasets that can be used for Play Fairway Analysis methodologies. This data catalog contains links to publicly available datasets from different sources that can be relevant for the low temperature geothermal systems. This submission contains data catalogs for Alaska, Hawaii, and the Conterminous United States, as well as a technical report on the methods used to classify and asses the geothermal play types.

Estimate of Lorentz force effects on charged particles

Thermonuclear (TN) fusion reaction between deutrons are D + D → T + P D + D → 3 He + n where P is the proton, D is the deuteron, T is the triton, n is the neutron, and 3 He is the helion. They are born with high energies (0.82 MeV for 3 He, 1.01 MeV for T, 3.02 MeV for P, and 2.45 MeV for n). The charged particles slow down due to the drag force (stopping power). While slowing down, the charged particles deposit their energy, which may affect the TN burn characteristics. When magnetic field is present, the velocity of the charged particle would be affected due to the Lorentz force, which can affect the stopping of the charged particle. As a consequence, TN burn characteristics may change, Our purpose is to asses the importance of the Lorentz force in stopping of the charged particle, based on a simple comparison between the Lorentz force and stopping power.

Advanced Power Systems Measurements: A Literature Review

In 2020, a literature survey was performed as part of a project aimed at producing guidance for the Department of Energy in the form of a Roadmap. The topic of the Roadmap was measurement. That was viewed as being generally underrepresented in consideration of sensing and measurement or instrumentation and measurement. Sensing is just the beginning of a process, and the instrument is just the container for the process. Measurement, the experimental process, has acquired a considerable body of theory over the last few decades, theory that is not widely taught and disseminated. The results of the survey can be said broadly to reflect that lack of appreciation. Specifically, the review found that there is support for the development of a more “capable” PMU. New algorithms and new documentary standards will be needed. Some of the findings are: (1) Point-on-wave technology adds new capability to the existing suite of measurements, and could allow for improved operation and protection (2) Power quality analysis has historically been concerned with assessment of how non-sinusoidal the delivered voltage shows promise in signature recognition, a departure from the modeling that has historically characterized power system measurements. (3) The PMU is assed as being a remarkable measurement system, but its performance is held back by the lack of understanding of the measurement theory underpinning its operation. (4) The PMU is being considered for application in the distribution system. There is a danger that it will be seen only in the light of the successful PMU implementation in transmission, and the two have different requirements. These various expansions of measurements will no doubt benefit from a better appreciation of the theoretical aspects of measurement. In this, and other, regards, our survey of the literature has identified gaps as well as possibilities.

Data and Code for Atomic Scale Etching of Diamond: Insights from Molecular Dynamics Simulations

This work investigates the effects of argon ions, hydrogen atoms, and hydrogen ions on the diamond (100) surface using classical molecular dynamics simulations. The purpose of this investigation was to asses plasma processing techniques for applications in quantum device manufacturing. The simulations suggest that combining argon ion smoothing with selective, near threshold energy H removal of amorphous C could be an effective strategy for diamond surface engineering, leading to more reliable and sensitive diamond color center devices. Results were found to differ significantly with interatomic potential, and an analysis of these differences was also carried out. Included in this repository are LAMMPS source files, input scripts, and plotting scripts required to reproduce the data. Also included are the output data required to make all the plots included in the associated publication.

DMTN-221: Periodicity Analysis in Alert Production

The baselined timeseries features to be computed in Alert Production include a Lomb-Scargle periodogram ran on two classes of variable systems: RR Lyrae and Eclipsing Binaries. Based on a simulated LSST-like cadence light curves taken from the Extended LSST Astronomical Time-series Classification Challenge (ELAsTiCC) we perform an end-to-end test to characterize the periodicity recovery on the Alert Production multi-band light curves. In both variable classes, we found that a single-band Lomb-Scargle implementation yields to a low fraction of recovered periods, with a significant preference on the simple periodic phenomena such as RR Lyrae. We also investigated the results from a multi-band Lomb-Scargle and found an increased fraction of recovered periodicities above 15% for the eclipsing binaries, and over 80$\%$ for the RR Lyrae stars. Our findings suggest that a multi-band Lomb-Scargle should be implemented for searching periodic phenomena through AP. We also asses the computational and scientific performance of several configurations on simulated alert data and find that our current configuration scales linearly with the number of detections while assuming an heuristic frequency grid.

Review of the Safety Analyses of the Konrad Repository - 20530

The Bundesgesellschaft fuer Endlagerung (BGE) is the license holder of all geological repository sites in Germany since 2017. Besides the construction of the Konrad repository for the emplacement of low- and intermediate-level waste (LILW), the operation of the Asse II mine including the retrieval of the emplaced waste, and the preparation for the closure of the Morsleben repository, BGE is responsible to carry out the operative tasks of selecting a site for a high-level waste (HLW) repository. The Konrad repository is Germany's first repository for radioactive waste with negligible heat generation, which was fully licensed under atomic law within the scope of a plan approval procedure from the original application in 1982 until the license was granted in 2002 and finally confirmed by the Federal Administrative Court in 2007. The emplacement of LILW was licensed up to a volume of 303,000 m{sup 3} with a total β/γ-activity of 5 x 10{sup 18} Bq and a total α-activity of 1.5 x 10{sup 17} Bq. Currently, the former iron ore mine Konrad is being converted to a repository and is expected to come into operation in 2027. But what if there is no safety case in place nor a regulatory framework tailored for a change of documents in order to ensure the safety according to the state-of-the-art of science and technology during the evolution of a long-term project such as a geological repository? In this presentation, a review procedure of the safety analyses, that have been the basis of the plan approval decision for the Konrad repository at that time, will be described. Furthermore, the first results of this graduated review procedure for updating the safety analyses will be presented. (authors)
