Free-spray characteristics and spray-wall interactions of methanol on a gasoline direct injector under flash-boiling and non-flash-boiling conditions

Methanol is considered a promising alternative fuel for internal combustion engines (ICEs) due to its high-octane number, fast laminar flame speed, and elevated latent heat of vaporization, all of which support higher compression ratios and improved thermal efficiency. However, its substantial latent heat of vaporization also poses cold-start challenges, such as misfire and fuel film deposition. This study aims to investigate methanol spray morphology and spray-wall interaction using the Spray M injector from the Engine Combustion Network within a constant-pressure flow vessel. A recently developed unified numerical framework capable of modeling both flash and non-flash boiling sprays is validated against experimental liquid volume fraction data acquired via 3-D computed tomography. Here, the results reveal that flash boiling significantly alters the spray morphology, leading to smaller droplets and spray collapse due to enhanced air-entrainment-induced turbulence. Quantitative agreement between experiments and simulations confirms this behavior. Coupled 0-D equilibrium and 3-D computational fluid dynamics analyses show that flash boiling accelerates evaporation and reduces fuel residence time, while non-flash conditions maintain a persistent liquid core more susceptible to wall wetting. Wall temperature diagnostics reveal that spray collapse alters heat transfer patterns by shifting cooling effects. Mixture fraction analysis indicates that evaporation is primarily governed by shear-layer turbulence, though deviations from adiabatic equilibrium mixing emerge under low-turbulence conditions. Finally, increasing fuel, ambient, and wall temperatures reduces wall wetting and film thickness, mitigating cold-start risks. These findings enhance the understanding of methanol sprays’ behavior and support its adoption as a viable, alternative fuel for ICEs.

Mapping ammonia-diesel combustion on a single-cylinder 107 mm bore diesel engine retrofitted for ammonia port-fuel injection

Ammonia is garnering significant interest from the international maritime sector as an alternative fuel. It is attractive as a hydrogen carrier and as a fuel because it has a higher volumetric energy density compared with gaseous or liquid hydrogen, making it easier to store and transport without requiring high pressures or cryogenic storage. Ammonia has significant toxicity concerns, but safe handling procedures have already been established because it is one of the most widely produced chemicals worldwide for use as a fertilizer. Barriers to consuming NH 3 as a fuel in engines include (1) less favorable ignition energy and flame speed compared with conventional fuels; (2) emissions challenges, including potentially high NH 3 , NO X , and N 2 O emissions; and (3) fuel delivery and handling challenges. Although NH 3 has been used to fuel compression-ignition marine engines in limited demonstration projects, technical barriers still exist. The use of NH 3 as a fuel in smaller-bore, high-speed auxiliary engines for large vessels and for smaller inland and coastal marine applications remains unaddressed. This work investigates a late-injection diesel pilot ignition dual-fuel NH 3 strategy using a single-cylinder, high-speed Cummins four-stroke diesel engine platform with a 107 mm bore and 1.1 L displacement per cylinder. The engine was modified for port fuel injection of heated gaseous anhydrous NH 3 . The diesel fuel injection system and the combustion geometry were unmodified to represent a retrofit application, which would minimize additional hardware to maximize diesel fuel displacement with NH 3 . Furthermore, the results show the applicability of a late injection diesel pilot strategy to overcome the challenging fuel properties of NH 3 over the engine operating envelope. Mapping results focusing on emissions are presented, and comparisons are made to a conventional diesel combustion baseline.

Imprint of Anthropogenic Sources and Soil Removal on the Surface Concentration of H2 in the Contiguous US

Hydrogen (H2) is experiencing renewed interest throughout the world as a low carbon fuel alternative or complement to fossil fuels. Significant uncertainties remain regarding the environmental impact of increasing H2 usage, in part due to gaps in our understanding of the H2 atmospheric budget, including the H2 release from industrial activities and the H2 soil removal, the most important sink of H2. This study focuses on H2 dry air mole fractions measured by the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory in discrete ambient air samples collected every few days at sites located in the contiguous United States between 2010 and 2022. We take advantage of the long-term observations from this network to study the regional distribution of H2 sources using the potential source contribution function (PSCF). We find that H2 PSCF is consistent with a large anthropogenic source of atmospheric H2 from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuel. However, episodic air masses with high H2 dry air mole fractions (>700 ppb) recorded at some sampling locations in the Western and Southeastern US are not associated with elevated CO, suggesting significant noncombustion anthropogenic or geological sources of H2. Air masses depleted in H2 are recorded in rural or remote continental sites. Our analysis of observations from a tall tower in NE Colorado suggests that the degree of H2 depletion not only reflects differences in soil exposure but also the regional inhibition of the soil sink under arid conditions.
