SCCOUT: Surveying for Categorization and Control of Organism in Unwelcome Territory

Advancements in the fields of science, technology, and medicine have contributed largely to the growth of society over the last century. Thanks to these discoveries, all corners of the planet are connected both digitally and physically. Progress in the field of medicine has led to people living longer, fuller lives and a general increase in global population. Awareness of our world’s changing climate and the effects that has on local and global ecosystems has spurred great efforts to protect the environment. These discoveries along with many others have helped our world grow in a myriad of ways; however, certain efforts in agriculture, natural resource management, and ecosystem management have not scaled to accommodate this growth. Increasing prevalence and ease of dissemination of invasive plants and animals, diseases, and changing ecological conditions pose significant challenges to biodiversity, ecosystem health, and agricultural productivity. Moreover, as the world population grows, there are more people to feed and less viable farmland to produce food for them. Despite the increasing prevalence of these issues, methods for addressing and tracking them have stayed relatively the same for at least the last several decades.

Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Infrastructure Security Division (ISD) Assessment Prioritization Project

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Infrastructure Security Division (CISA ISD) manages a diverse portfolio of assessments across the nation’s critical infrastructure sectors. These assessments—ranging in type, scope, and complexity—are essential for identifying vulnerabilities and strengthening national security. However, the wide variation in assessment offerings and the increasing demand for limited resources have highlighted the need for a transparent, structured approach to prioritizing assessment activities. To address this challenge, CISA ISD partnered with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to review current assessment methodologies, analyze existing prioritization practices, and develop a comprehensive, national-security-focused prioritization framework. This report summarizes the project’s approach, key findings, and actionable recommendations for enhancing ISD’s assessment program.

Unpinning the Lynchpin: Development of a system to introduce redundancy at Department of Energy laboratories

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory system employs over 78,000 people and had a budget of $8.1 billion for Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23). This diverse workforce includes employees at all levels from operational support staff to senior level management. Together, the labs take on incredibly complex and unique technical challenges in an attempt to address fundamental National and global needs. These technical challenges often require specialized training such that only a single person is truly capable of completing specific tasks. With the modern competitive environment, and an aging workforce, the risk of technical capability loss is highly probable with potentially severe impact. An online survey of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL) employees, a typical DOE lab, found that of responders with greater than 10 years of experience, 100% of respondents felt burnt out, 40% felt they were not paid fairly, and 50% believe that not enough is done by leadership to retain them as an employee. Couple that to an aging workforce, and the risk of losing institutional knowledge due to single point of failure, or lynchpin, is significant. There is a need for a system which reduces the risk of operational and technical losses due to lynchpin employees leaving the organization. A mitigation of this risk would lead to the successful transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next, improving the rate of development and minimizing general risk of mistakes.

Science and Technology Review (May 2021)

Lawrence Livermore has been on the forefront of cancer research for over 60 years. Early interest in cancer statistics stemmed from the nature of work, particularly how radiation affects humans. The Department of Energy funded research to investigate the effects of radiation on workers with long term exposure. This research quickly morphed into a wider breadth of cancer research topics, including the use of advanced computational models to investigate mutations in genes. Livermore is regarded as a leader in cancer research, from the Human Genome Center to its participation in the National Cancer Institute’s “Moonshot” project. The highly interdisciplinary Laboratory unites research in one more example: bringing together cancer biology, 3D printing, high-performance computing, big data, and materials science to address this pressing medical challenge.

MIT Capstone Project Assignment 1 - Existing System Design

“FPU in 5”: The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and upper management at Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) have informally set a long-term goal of decreasing the development cycle of new systems to five years or less. The driver is to be able to respond to emerging situations which require new capabilities more quickly. There are numerous approaches to solve the problem, and any single improvement is likely insufficient. Our capstone project focuses on modernizing the design development processes, production development processes, and communication between design agencies (DAs) and production agencies (PAs) to decrease the timeline from conceptual study to first production unit. Our project’s system problem statement (SPS) is below: TO decrease the time from conceptual study to first production unit BY centralizing design development, production development, and information exchange USING digital engineering techniques.

(U) MIT Capstone Project Assignment 2: Proposed System Design

“First Production Unit (FPU) in 5”: The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and upper management at Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) have set a long-term goal of decreasing the development cycle of new systems to five years or less. The driver is to be able to respond to emerging situations which require new capabilities more quickly. There are numerous approaches to solve the problem, and any single improvement is likely insufficient. We analyzed a variety of possible solutions at varying levels of specificity as shown in Figure 1. We chose to focus our scope on the optimization of existing documentation processes because it is the least likely to add additional risk and can be accomplished with lower investment than other potential solutions.

Science &Technology Review (September 2022)

Computer modeling is essential to scientific research. Models simulate natural phenomena to aid scientists in understanding their underlying principles. While the most complex models running on supercomputers may contain millions of lines of code and generate billions of data points, models never simulate reality perfectly. Experiments—in contrast—have been fundamental to the study of natural phenomena from science’s earliest days. However, some of today’s complex experiments generate too much data for the human mind to interpret.

Design of Hypothetical Processes for the Production of 131 I and 99 Mo from Activation Targets

For over six decades, medical isotope production has been a high-priority focus of many research reactors across the globe. The majority of these isotopes were produced using highly-enriched uranium (HEU) or low enriched uranium (LEU) – delivering millions of doses of diagnostic and therapeutic isotopes. As a consequence of this production, however, six decades of isotope production has resulted in massive quantities of spent uranium material worldwide with no known disposition pathway creating growing proliferation concerns. Supported by the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Material Management and Minimization (M3) program, there has been increased focus in the production of high-priority isotopes without special nuclear materials or without uranium altogether. Isotope production via activation can potentially fulfill regional isotope demands – particularly in under-developed regions without access to isotope supply chains. The benefits of this approach would be a reduction in uranium proliferation risks, less special nuclear material wastes, and reduced risk of supply disruption in the likely event that major isotope producers will again go off-line as has happened in recent years due to a number of factors.

"Forward" Projects Boost U.S. Leadership in Advanced Computing and Artificial Intelligence

High-performance computing (HPC) has been an indispensable research tool for accessing physical realms difficult, or impossible, achieve with experiment alone. For several decades, the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Science has deployed sophisticated HPC systems for solving the nation’s most pressing grand challenge problems in energy, climate change, and human health. In addition, DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has adeptly applied HPC in support of key national security objectives, such as nuclear science and stockpile modernization and stewardship. Over time, HPC systems have become increasingly more complex and capable, and as each new machine has come online, scientists and engineers have taken advantage of vast increases in compute power to accelerate scientific discoveries and engineering innovation.

Tactile Game System

The board game industry revenue has seen rapid growth from 6.2 billion USD to a projected 8.6 billion USD in revenue from 2018 to 2024 indicating an increased demand for this style of product. Inflation, shipping and the cost of raw materials have increased the cost for producing board games. This increased the barrier of entry and reduces profit margins. Many people lose the chance to experience much of the catalogue of modern hobby board games because of this. There is a need for a digital and low-cost solution for buyers to fulfill demand and create a steady supply while maintaining the characteristics that make board games attractive to consumers. Lowering the barrier of entry will allow for more consumers to enter the market and provide a catalyst for growth in the board game community.
