String correlators on $\text{AdS}_3$: Analytic structure and dual CFT

We continue our study of string correlators on Euclidean \text{AdS}_3 AdS 3 with pure NS-NS flux. The worldsheet and spacetime correlators have a rich analytic structure, which we analyse completely for genus 0 four-point functions. We show that correlators exhibit a simple behaviour near their singularities. The spacetime correlators are meromorphic functions in the \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R}) S L ( 2 , ℝ ) -spins, whose pole structure is shown to agree with the prediction of a recent proposal for the dual \text{CFT}_2 CFT 2 . Moreover, we also compute the residues of the spacetime correlators for some of the poles exactly and find again a perfect match with the proposal for the dual \text{CFT}_2 CFT 2 , thereby checking the duality for some non-trivial four-point functions exactly. Our computations simplify drastically in the tensionless limit of \mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4 A d S 3 × S 3 × 𝕋 4 where the behaviour near the poles gives in fact the exact answer. This paper is the third in a series with several installments.

Logarithmic corrections to the entropy of rotating black holes and black strings in AdS 5

We investigate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of supersymmetric, rotating, asymptotically AdS 5 black holes and black strings. Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the entropy of these black objects is determined, on the field theory side, by the superconformal index and the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, respectively. We read off the logarithmic correction from those field-theoretic partition functions. On the gravity side, we take the near-horizon limit and apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence whose associated charged Cardy formula describes the degeneracy of states at subleading order and determines the logarithmic correction to the entropy. We find perfect agreement between these two approaches. Our results provide a window into precision microstate counting and demonstrate the efficacy of low-energy, symmetry-based approaches such as the Kerr/CFT correspondence for asymptotically AdS black objects under certain conditions.

Tensionless strings on AdS 3 orbifolds

The bound state of one NS5 brane (wrapped on a T 4 ) and N NS1-branes has two dual descriptions: its low-energy dynamics is described by the symmetric orbifold of T 4 , while the near horizon geometry is captured by string theory on AdS 3 × S 3 × T 4 with one unit of NS flux. The latter theory is exactly solvable in the hybrid formalism, and this allows one to prove the equivalence of the two descriptions. In this paper we extend this duality to Z k orbifolds of this AdS 3 × S 3 background. In particular, we show that the corresponding worldsheet spectrum reproduces exactly the perturbative excitations on top of a certain non-perturbative state in the dual symmetric orbifold theory. Since the AdS/CFT duality map is exact for these models, we obtain an interesting picture of how the duality relates boundary and bulk descriptions.

A 10d construction of Euclidean axion wormholes in flat and AdS space

Euclidean wormhole geometries sourced by axions and dilatons are puzzling objects in quantum gravity. From one side of the wormhole to the other, the scalar fields traverse a few Planck lengths in field space and so corrections from the UV might potentially affect the consistency of the solution, even when the wormholes are large. Motivated by this, we carry out the first explicit 10d lifts of regular Euclidean axion wormholes. We start off with the lift of Giddings-Strominger wormholes in $\mathcal{N}$ = 8 Euclidean supergravity over a 6-torus to 10d type IIA supergravity and find the solution can be everywhere tuned into the parametrically controlled supergravity regime. Secondly, we construct explicit wormholes in AdS spaces and find them again to be under parametric control. We find the first wormhole solutions in massive type IIA on S 3 × S 3 and in type IIB on T 1,1 . The latter has an explicit holographic dual, and similar to the earlier constructions in AdS 5 × S 5 /$\mathbb{Z}$ k , the wormholes violate operator positivity since Tr(F ± $\star$ F) 2 < 0. This puzzle might arise from subtleties related to computing holographic n-point functions in the presence of multiple boundaries.

Gravitating spinning strings in AdS 3

In the AdS/CFT correspondence, single trace operators of large-N gauge theories at large spin J can be described by classical spinning strings, giving a geometric and classical description of their spectrum at strong coupling. We observe that in AdS 3 these strings have significant gravitational back-reaction at sufficiently large spin, since the gravitational force does not decay at long distances. We construct solutions for folded spinning strings coupled to gravity in AdS 3 and compute their spectrum, corresponding to the leading Regge trajectory of Virasroro primary operators. These solutions exist only below a maximal spin J < J max , and as J → J max the solution approaches an extremal rotating BTZ black hole.

BPS and near-BPS black holes in AdS 5 and their spectrum in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM

We study quantum corrections in the gravitational path integral around nearly 1/16-BPS black holes in asymptotically AdS 5 × S 5 space, dual to heavy states in 4D N = 4 super Yang-Mills. The analysis provides a gravitational explanation of why 1/16-BPS black holes exhibit an exact degeneracy at large N and why all such states have the same charges, confirming the belief that the superconformal index precisely counts the entropy of extremal black holes. We show the presence of a gap of order N −2 between the 1/16-BPS black holes and the lightest near-BPS black holes within the same charge sector. This is the first example of such a gap for black hole states within the context of AdS 5 holography. We also derive the spectrum of near-BPS states that lie above this gap. Our computation relies on finding the correct version of the N = 2 super-Schwarzian theory which captures the breaking of the SU(1, 1|1) symmetry when the black hole has finite temperature and non-zero chemical potential. Finally, we comment on possible stringy and non-perturbative corrections that can affect the black hole spectrum.

The phase diagram of BPS black holes in AdS 5

Motivated by recent studies of supersymmetric black holes, we revisit the phase diagram of AdS black holes, whether BPS or not, with particular emphasis on the role of rotation. We develop BPS thermodynamics systematically and, in many explicit examples, we study its striking similarities with more familiar AdS black holes, as well as some differences. We highlight an important fugacity that preserves BPS saturation but is not captured by the supersymmetric index.

Towards an “$\mathrm{AdS}_1$/$\mathrm{CFT}_0$” correspondence from the $\mathrm{D}$(-1)/$\mathrm{D}$7 system?

We argue that a type IIB Euclidean supergravity solution of the form $\mathbb{R}$ x S 1 x $\mathbb{T}$ 8 with imaginary self-dual F 1 flux through $\mathbb{R}$ x S 1 belongs to the chain of AdS d x S d x $\mathbb{T}$ 10-2d vacua with (imaginary) self-dual Fd flux, where d ≤ 5. Such vacua come from the near-horizon of D(d - 2)/D(8 - d) branes and are supersymmetric for odd values of d. For d = 1 we speculate that the hallmark of conformal symmetry for the matrix model dual is a vanishing free energy. The matrix dual was recently constructed by [1] by adding matrix interactions coming from strings stretching between the D(-1) and D7 branes to the IKKT matrix model. We find that the corresponding supergravity solution indeed has vanishing on-shell action. Specific F 5 fluxes need to be switched on as a consequence of (a T-dual version of) the Hanany-Witten effect.

Dispersive sum rules in AdS 2

Dispersion relations for S-matrices and CFT correlators translate UV consistency into bounds on IR observables. In this note, we construct dispersive sum rules for 1D CFTs. We use them to prove bounds on higher-derivative couplings in weakly-coupled non-gravitational EFTs in AdS2. At the leading order in the bulk-point limit, the bounds agree with the flat-space result. We compute the leading universal effect of finite AdS radius on the bounds. Along the way, we give an explicit formula for anomalous dimensions in general higher-derivative contact Witten diagrams in AdS 2 .

AdS 3 orbifolds, BTZ black holes, and holography

Conical defects of the form (AdS 3 × S 3 )/Z k have an exact orbifold description in worldsheet string theory, which we derive from their known presentation as gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models. The configuration of strings and fivebranes sourcing this geometry is well-understood, as is the correspondence to states/operators in the dual CFT 2 . One can analytically continue the construction to Euclidean AdS 3 (i.e. the hyperbolic ball $H$$^{+}_{3}$) and consider the orbifold by any infinite discrete (Kleinian) group generated by a set of elliptic elements γi ϵ SL(2, C), $γ$$^{ki}_{i}$ = 1, i = 1, . . . , K. The resulting geometry consists of multiple conical defects traveling along geodesics in $H$$^{+}_{3}$, and provides a semiclassical bulk description of correlation functions in the dual CFT involving the corresponding defect operators, which is nonperturbatively exact in α'. The Lorentzian continuation of these geometries describes a collection of defects colliding to make a BTZ black hole. We comment on a recent proposal to use such correlators to prepare a basis of black hole microstates, and elaborate on a picture of black hole formation and evaporation in terms of the underlying brane dynamics in the bulk.

Beyond AdS 2 /dCFT 1 : insertions in two Wilson loops

We consider two-point correlators of local operator insertions in a system of two Wilson-Maldacena loops in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on both sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the holographic side the correlator of two Wilson-Maldacena loops is given by a classical string world-sheet which in one phase connects two asymptotically AdS 2 regions and in the other phase is given by two disconnected AdS 2 caps; this configuration breaks supersymmetry as well as conformal invariance. We present a complete systematic account of the string world-sheet fluctuations, including the fermionic sector, and study the behavior of the holographic two-point correlators. On the field theory side we compute certain two-point correlators of local operator insertions by resumming sets of ladder diagrams. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of previously developed methods in tackling this non-conformal, non-susy regime.

AdS bulk locality from sharp CFT bounds

It is a long-standing conjecture that any CFT with a large central charge and a large gap Δ gap in the spectrum of higher-spin single-trace operators must be dual to a local effective field theory in AdS. We prove a sharp form of this conjecture by deriving numerical bounds on bulk Wilson coefficients in terms of Δ gap using the conformal bootstrap. Our bounds exhibit the scaling in Δ gap expected from dimensional analysis in the bulk. Our main tools are dispersive sum rules that provide a dictionary between CFT dispersion relations and S-matrix dispersion relations in appropriate limits. This dictionary allows us to apply recently-developed flat-space methods to construct positive CFT functionals. We show how AdS 4 naturally resolves the infrared divergences present in 4D flat-space bounds. Our results imply the validity of twice-subtracted dispersion relations for any S-matrix arising from the flat-space limit of AdS/CFT.

Holographic solar systems and hydrogen atoms: non-relativistic physics in AdS and its CFT dual

We study a non-relativistic limit of physics in AdS which retains the curvature through a harmonic Newtonian potential. This limit appears in a CFT dual through the spectrum of operators of large dimension and correlation functions of those operators with appropriate kinematics. In an additional flat spacetime limit, the spectrum is determined by scattering phase shifts (proportional to anomalous dimensions), and a CFT correlation function is proportional to the S-matrix. In particular, we describe the effect of resonances on the spectrum and correlation functions. As an example, we discuss the Coulomb potential (describing solar systems and hydrogen atoms in AdS) in detail.

Recent advances in CO 2 hydrogenation to value-added products — Current challenges and future directions

Climate change, global warming, fossil fuel depletion and rising fuel prices have created great incentives to seek alternative fuel production technologies. CO 2 transformation to value-added products using renewable H 2 has proven to be an emerging solution to enable this goal. In this regard, three different promising processes, namely methane, methanol and hydrocarbon synthesis via CO 2 hydrogenation are thoroughly discussed. In addition, the influential factors affecting process efficiencies such as catalyst design and mechanistic insight, operating conditions as well as reactor types are investigated, with key pathways that dictate catalyst activity and selectivity of the most promising materials described. Furthermore, a brief overview of the reactor configuration and its crucial role in the improving process viability is analyzed. Accordingly, fixed-bed, fluidized-bed, annular and spherical reactors along with H 2 O/H 2 perm-selective membrane reactors are disscussed for hydrocarbon production. In addition, different reactor configurations are compared to assess the best one that is adjustable depending on the reaction mechanism. In conclusion, a corrugated-wall dual-type membrane reactor is proposed as an emerging alternative for CO 2 hydrogenation to value-added products.

Generating multiple benefits from forests by producing value-added products: Lessons from the Pacific Northwestern US

This paper asks what conditions are needed to counteract a declining forest industry. The mobilization of supply chains for new value-added forest products and services can be supported by programs designed to simultaneously achieve multiple goals related to health, climate, and rural economic development. But several challenges are identified that underscore the need to stack benefits and incentives to achieve muti-sectoral goals. Based on a case study in Washington state, we find opportunities and constraints for sourcing forest products are determined by the local and regional conditions such as availability of working forests and their residues, socioeconomic conditions, workforce availability, transportation options, and perceptions about social license of the new industry. Key recommendations are the need for (1) a consistent demand and resilient supply chain for the new product; (2) a stable, supportive policy and assessment framework; (3) timely, transparent, and trusted monitoring and reporting of benefits and costs; (4) fostering engagement and buy-in from stakeholders; (5) a context-specific evaluation of opportunities and constraints; and (6) agreement on the goals of sustainable forestry. A diversity of products and markets builds a more resilient forest-based economy by mitigating impacts of disruptions in any individual market, adding value to biomass, increasing employment, and reducing forest risks to fire, insects, and disease.

Transgenic Sugarcane–Oilcane: An Alternative Feedstock for the Production of Drop-in Fuel and Value-Added Bioproducts

The utilization of plants and other agricultural produce can partly offset petroleum dependency for energy requirements and can potentially provide sustainable solutions to global environmental problems. To this end, synthetic biology has shown great potential in developing transgenic bioenergy grasses such as sugarcane, sorghum, miscanthus, and energy cane that hyperaccumulate energy-rich lipid molecules in their vegetative tissues, such as leaves, stems, and roots. These perennial high-biomass transgenic C4 grasses are not targeted to grow on prime agricultural land and can be dedicatedly used to produce biofuels and other value-added bioproducts. Recently, sugarcane has been metabolically engineered to sequestrate carbon from juice towards biosynthesis of lipid molecules in the vegetative tissues. Transgenic sugarcane is referred to as “oilcane.” Transgenic sugarcane–oilcane has improved energy density due to an elevated lipid content in the vegetative tissues. Transgenic bioenergy crops cater to both cellulosic sugars and vegetative lipids, hence resulting in higher biofuel yield (biodiesel/renewable diesel and bioethanol) per unit area of cultivable land. In this book chapter, the genetic engineering of sugarcane and its bioprocessing are discussed to illustrate its development and use as an alternative feedstock for the production of biofuels (bio-jet fuel, biodiesel, and bioethanol) and value-added bioproducts.

AdS scale separation and the distance conjecture

It has been argued that orientifold vacua with fluxes in type IIA string theory can achieve moduli stabilisation and arbitrary decoupling between the AdS and KK scales upon sending certain unconstrained RR-flux quanta to infinity. In this paper, we find a novel scalar field in the open-string sector that allows us to interpolate between such IIA vacua that differ in flux quanta and find that the limit of large fluxes is nicely consistent with the distance conjecture. This shows that the massive IIA vacua pass an important Swampland criterion and suggests that scale-separated AdS vacua might not be in the Swampland. Our analysis also naturally suggests a flux analogue of “Reid’s fantasy” where flux vacua that differ in quantised flux numbers can be connected through trajectories in open-string field space and not just via singular domain walls.

Celestial amplitudes as AdS-Witten diagrams

Both celestial and momentum space amplitudes in four dimensions are beset by divergences resulting from spacetime translation and sometimes scale invariance. In this paper we consider a (linearized) marginal deformation of the celestial CFT for Yang-Mills theory which preserves 2D conformal invariance but breaks both spacetime translation and scale invariance and involves a chirally coupled massive scalar. The resulting MHV celestial amplitudes are completely finite (apart from the usual soft and collinear divergences and isolated poles in the sum of the weights) and take the canonical CFT form. Moreover, we show they can be simply rewritten in terms of AdS 3 -Witten contact diagrams which evaluate to the well-known D-functions, thereby forging a direct connection between flat and AdS holography.
