Particle-hole asymmetry in the dynamical spin and charge responses of corner-shared 1D cuprates

Although many experiments imply that oxygen orbitals play an essential role in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates, their precise role in collective spin and charge excitations and superconductivity is not yet fully understood. Here, we study the doping-dependent dynamical spin and charge structure factors of single and multi-orbital (pd) models for doped one-dimensional corner-shared spin-chain cuprates using several numerically exact methods. In doing so, we determine the orbital composition of the collective spin and charge excitations of cuprates, with important implications for our understanding of these materials. For example, we observe a particle-hole asymmetry in the orbital-resolved charge excitations, which is directly relevant to resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments and not captured by the single-band Hubbard model. Our results imply that one must explicitly include the oxygen degrees of freedom in order to fully understand some experimental observations on cuprate materials.

Visualizing quasiparticles from quantum entanglement for general one-dimensional phases

In this work, we present a quantum information framework for the entanglement behavior of the low-energy quasiparticle (QP) excitations in various quantum phases in one-dimensional (1D) systems. We first establish an exact correspondence between the correlation matrix and the QP entanglement Hamiltonian for free fermions and find an extended in-gap state in the QP entanglement Hamiltonian as a consequence of the position uncertainty of the QP. A more general understanding of such an in-gap state can be extended to a Kramers theorem for the QP entanglement Hamiltonian, which also applies to strongly interacting systems. Further, we present a set of ubiquitous entanglement spectrum features, dubbed entanglement fragmentation, conditional mutual information, and measurement-induced nonlocal entanglement for QPs in 1D symmetry protected topological phases. Our result thus provides another framework to identify different phases of matter in terms of their QP entanglement.

Suppressed superexchange interactions in the cuprates by bond-stretching oxygen phonons

We study a multiorbital Hubbard–Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model for the one-dimensional (1D) corner-shared cuprates in the adiabatic and nonadiabatic limits using exact diagonalization and determinant quantum Monte Carlo. At half filling and in the adiabatic limit, lattice dimerization can be achieved only over a narrow range of couplings slightly below a critical coupling g c . Beyond this value, the sign of the effective hopping changes, and the lattice becomes unstable. Strong lattice fluctuations replace the dimerization state in the nonadiabatic case. We also examine the model's temperature-dependent uniform and dynamical magnetic susceptibilities and compare them to the results of an effective spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. In doing so, we demonstrate that lattice fluctuations induced by the e-ph interaction suppress the effective superexchange interaction when g < g c . Furthermore, our results elucidate the effect of bond-stretching phonons in the parent cuprate compounds in general and are particularly relevant to 1D cuprates, where strong e-ph interactions have recently been inferred.

Exact solution of the frustrated Potts model with next-nearest-neighbor interactions in one dimension via AI bootstrapping

The one-dimensional (1D) 𝐽 1 −𝐽 2 𝑞-state Potts model is solved exactly for arbitrary 𝑞 by analytically block-diagonalizing the original 𝑞 2 ×𝑞 2 transfer matrix into a simple 2 × 2 maximally symmetric subspace, based on using OpenAI's reasoning model o3-mini-high to exactly solve the 𝑞 = 3 case. Furthermore, by matching relevant subspaces, we map the Potts model onto a simpler effective 1D 𝑞-state Potts model, where 𝐽 2 acts as the nearest-neighbor interaction and 𝐽 1 as an effective magnetic field, nontrivially generalizing a 56-year-old theorem previously limited to the simplest case (𝑞 = 2, the Ising model). Our exact results provide insights to phenomena such as atomic or electronic order stacking in layered materials and the emergence of dome-shaped phases in complex phase diagrams. In conclusion, this work is anticipated to fuel both research in 1D frustrated magnets for recently discovered finite-temperature application potentials and the fast moving topic area of AI in science.

Structural Asymmetry and Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity in Chiral Palladium-Halide Semiconductors

Chiral Pb-free metal-halide semiconductors (MHSs) have attracted considerable attention in the field of spintronics due to various interesting spin-related properties and chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. Despite their excellent chemical and structural tunability, the material scope and crystal structure of Pb-free chiral MHSs exhibiting the CISS effect are still limited; chiral MHSs that have metal-halide structures of octahedra and tetrahedra are only reported. Here, we report a new class of chiral MHSs, of which palladium (Pd)-halides are formed in 1D square-pyramidal structures or 0D square-planar structures, with a general formula of ((R/S-MBA) 2 PdBr 4 ) 1-x ((R/S-MBA) 2 PdCl 4 ) x (MBA = methylbenzylammonium; x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1) for the first time. The crystals adopt the 1D helical chain of Pd-halide square-pyramid (for x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75) and 0D structure of Pd-halide square-plane (for x = 1). All the Pd-halides are distorted by the interaction between the halide and the chiral organic ammonium and arranged in a noncentrosymmetric position. Circular dichroism (CD) for ((R/S-MBA) 2 PdBr 4 ) 1-x ((R/S-MBA) 2 PdCl 4 ) x indicates that chirality was transferred from chiral organic ammonium to Pd-halide inorganics. ((R-MBA) 2 PdBr 4 ) 1-x ((R-MBA) 2 PdCl 4 ) x (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75) shows a distortion index of 0.127-0.128, which is the highest value among the previously reported chiral MHSs to the best of our knowledge. We also find that (R/S-MBA) 2 Pd(Br 1-x Cl x ) 4 crystals grow along the out-of-plane direction during spin coating and have high c-axis orientation and crystallinity, and (R/S-MBA) 2 Pd(Br 1-x Cl x ) 4 (x = 0 and 0.5) crystals exhibit a CISS effect in polycrystalline bulk films. In conclusion, these results demonstrate the possibility of a new metal-halide series with square-planar structures or square-pyramidal structures for future spintronic applications.

Paradigm for approaching the forbidden phase transition in the one-dimensional Ising model at fixed finite temperature: Single chain in a magnetic field

In a previous paper, the forbidden spontaneous phase transition in the one-dimensional Ising model was found to be approachable arbitrarily closely in decorated ladders by ultra-narrow phase crossover (UNPC) at a given finite temperature T 0 with the crossover width 2δT reduced exponentially, which resemble a genuine first-order transition with large latent heat. Here, I reveal that the forbidden phase transition can be approached at fixed T 0 as well in decorated single-chain Ising models in the presence of a magnetic field, in which T 0 is determined by the interactions involving only the decorated parts and the magnetic field, while 2δT is independently, exponentially reduced (δT = 0 means a genuine transition) by restoring the ferromagnetic interaction between the ordinary spins on the chain backbone-which was neglected in the previous studies of pseudo-transition-thus manifesting that this asymptoticity to the forbidden transition is essentially the buildup of coherence in preformed crossover of local states. Furthermore, I show that the UNPC can be realized even in the absence of the conventional geometric frustration because the magnetic field itself can induce previously unnoticed hidden spin frustration. In conclusion, these findings make the doors wide open to the engineering and utilization of UNPC as a new paradigm for exploring exotic phenomena and 1D device applications.

Witnessing entanglement in quantum magnets using neutron scattering

We demonstrate how quantum entanglement can be directly witnessed in the quasi-1D Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF 3 . We apply three entanglement witnesses—one tangle, two tangle, and quantum Fisher information—to its inelastic neutron spectrum and compare with spectra simulated by finite-temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and classical Monte Carlo methods. We find that each witness provides direct access to entanglement. Of these, quantum Fisher information is the most robust experimentally and indicates the presence of at least bipartite entanglement up to at least 50 K, corresponding to around 10% of the spinon zone-boundary energy. We apply quantum Fisher information to higher spin-S Heisenberg chains and show theoretically that the witnessable entanglement gets suppressed to lower temperatures as the quantum number increases. Finally, we outline how these results can be applied to higher dimensional quantum materials to witness and quantify entanglement.

Confinement and Kink Entanglement Asymmetry on a Quantum Ising Chain

In this work, we explore the interplay of confinement, string breaking and entanglement asymmetry on a 1D quantum Ising chain. We consider the evolution of an initial domain wall and show that, surprisingly, while the introduction of confinement through a longitudinal field typically suppresses entanglement, it can also serve to increase it beyond a bound set for free particles. Our model can be tuned to conserve the number of domain walls, which gives an opportunity to explore entanglement asymmetry associated with link variables. We study two approaches to deal with the non-locality of the link variables, either directly or following a Kramers-Wannier transformation that maps bond variables (kinks) to site variables (spins). We develop a numerical procedure for computing the asymmetry using tensor network methods and use it to demonstrate the different types of entanglement and entanglement asymmetry.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Pseudo-1D Chromium Thiolate Coordination Polymers

The synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of two novel, pseudo-one-dimensional (1D) chromium thiolate coordination polymers (CPs), CrBTT and Cr2BDT3, are reported. The structures of these materials were determined using X-ray powder diffraction revealing highly symmetric 1D chains embedded within a CP framework. The magnetic coupling of this chain system was measured by SQUID magnetometry, revealing a switch from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic behavior dictated by the angular geometrical constraints within the CP scaffold consistent with the Goodenough–Kanamori–Anderson rules. Intrachain magnetic coupling constants J NN of –32.0 and +5.7 K were found for CrBTT and Cr 2 BDT 3 , respectively, using the 1D Bonner–Fisher model of magnetism. The band structure of these materials has also been examined by optical spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations revealing semiconducting behavior. Furthermore, our findings here demonstrate how CP scaffolds can support idealized low-dimensional structural motifs and dictate magnetic interactions through tuning of geometry and inter-spin couplings.

Prediction of L⁢i 3 ⁢F⁡e 8 ⁢B 8 compound with rapid one-dimensional ion diffusion channels

Using a computational crystal structure search in the Li-Fe-B ternary system, we predict a stable phase of L⁢i 3 ⁢F⁡e 8 ⁢B 8 , featuring 1D channels that enable rapid Li-ion transport. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that the Li-ion diffusion coefficient in L⁢i 3 ⁢F⁡e 8⁢ B 8 surpasses that of common electrode and conductive additive materials by several orders of magnitude. The high diffusion in L⁢i 3 ⁢F⁡e 8 ⁢B 8 can be explained by the Frenkel–Kontorova model, which describes an incommensurate state between the Li diffusion chain and the periodic potential field caused by the FeB backbone structure. The favorable lithium-ion diffusivity and mechanical properties of L⁢i 3 ⁢F⁡e 8 ⁢B 8 make it a promising conductive additive for battery materials. Furthermore, an external magnetic field can further manipulate the properties of this material due to its predicted itinerant ferromagnetism, which also offers a platform for exploring spin-dependent phenomena.

Stacking Faults and Short-Range Magnetic Correlations in Single Crystal Y 5 Ru 2 O 12 : A Structure with Ru +4.5 One-Dimensional Chains

In this paper, the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of Y 5 Ru 2 O 12 , a new member of the Ln 5 B 2 O 12 class (Ln = lanthanide, B = Ru, Re, Mo) are reported. Single crystals of Y 5 Ru 2 O 12 are synthesized using a high-temperature, high-pressure (700 °C, 200 MPa) hydrothermal method. The structure features edge-sharing Ru—O—Ru 1D chains of distorted RuO6 octahedra. The YO n (n = 6 and 7) polyhedral groups bridge Ru—O—Ru chains across the unit cell by forming a complex 3D structure. The Ru—O—Ru chains contain alternating shorter and longer Ru—Ru distances along the chain. Single crystal neutron diffraction shows streak-like diffuse scattering along the H-direction, due to stacking faults. Temperature-dependent anisotropic magnetic measurements reveal a broad feature over a wide temperature range, with a maximum at ≈70 K indicating potential short-range ordering, with canted antiferromagnetic behavior below 30 K. The dominant magnetic interactions are antiferromagnetic with a large negative Weiss temperature θ ≈ –200 K. The compound has an effective magnetic moment that is anomalously large for this class of compounds (≈4 μ B Ru –1 ), and a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian describing the unusual anisotropic magnetization of Y 5 Ru 2 O 12 is proposed.

Density Functional Theory Study of Controllable Optical Absorptions and Magneto-Optical Properties of Magnetic CrI 3 Nanoribbons: Implications for Compact 2D Magnetic Devices

A chromium triiodide (CrI 3 ) monolayer has an interesting ferromagnetic ground-state. In this work, we calculate band structures and magnetic moments of tensile-strained and bent zigzag CrI 3 nanoribbons with density functional theory. The edge iodine atoms form flat low-lying conduction bands and couple with chromium atoms ferromagnetically, while the non-edge iodine atoms weakly couple antiferromagnetically. Narrow CrI 3 nanoribbons have two locally stable magnetic moment orientations, namely out-of-plane and in-plane (along the nanoribbon periodic direction) configurations. This enables four magnetization states in CrI 3 nanoribbons, including two out-of-plane ones (up and down) and two in-plane ones (forward and backward along the nanoribbon periodical direction), increasing the operating controllability. Based on the one-dimensional Ising spin chain model, the spin correlation length of the narrow CrI 3 nanoribbon is estimated as about 10 Å at its estimated Curie temperature of 27 Kelvin, which is lower than the measured 45 Kelvin of the monolayer CrI 3 . The optical absorption and magneto-optical properties of CrI 3 nanoribbons are investigated with many-body perturbation GW-BSE (Bethe-Salpeter equation), including magnetic dichroism, Faraday and magneto-optical Kerr effects. Here, the low-energy dark excitons are mainly from transitions between electrons and holes with unlike spins and are non-Frenkel-like, while the bright excitons have mixed spin configurations. The intrinsic lifetime of excitons can be over one nanosecond, suitable for quantum information processes. Tensile strains and bending manifestly modulate the absorption spectra and magneto-optical properties of CrI 3 nanoribbons within a technologically important photon energy-range of ~1.0-2.0 eV. The CrI 3 nanoribbons can be used in 1D or 2D magnetic storage nanodevices, tunable magnetic optoelectronics, and spin-based quantum information controls.

Antiferro- and metamagnetism in the S = 7 / 2 hollandite analog Eu Ga 2 Sb 2

Recent work analyzing the impact of nonsymmorphic symmetries on electronic states has given rise to the discovery of multiple types of topological matter. Here we report the single-crystal synthesis and magnetic properties of Eu Ga 2 Sb 2 , a Eu-based antiferromagnet structurally consisting of pseudo-1D chains of Eu ions related by a nonsymmorphic glide plane. Here we find the onset of antiferromagnetic order at T N = 8K. Above T N the magnetic susceptibility is isotropic. Curie-Weiss analysis suggests competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, with p eff = 8.1 μ B as expected for 4f 7 J = S = 7/2 Eu 2+ ions. Below T N and at low applied magnetic fields, an anisotropy develops linearly, reaching χ ⊥ /χ ∥ = 6 at T = 2K. There is concomitant metamagnetic behavior along χ ∥ , with a magnetic field of μ 0 H ≈ 0.5 T sufficient to suppress the anisotropy. Independent of crystal orientation, there is a continuous evolution to a field-polarized paramagnetic state with M = 7μ B /Eu 2+ at μ 0 H = 2 T as T → 0 K. Specific-heat measurements show a recovered magnetic entropy of ΔS mag ≈ 16.4 Jmol –1 K –1 from T ~ 0 K to T = T N , close to the expected value of R ln(8) for an S = 7/2 ion, indicating negligible low-dimensional spin fluctuations above T N . We find no evidence of unusual behaviors arising either from the dimensionality or the presence of the nonsymmorphic symmetries.

Mobile orbitons in Ca 2 CuO 3 : Crucial role of Hund's exchange

We investigate the Cu L 3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of a quasi-1D antiferromagnet Ca 2 CuO 3 . In addition to the magnetic excitations, which are well-described by the two-spinon continuum, we observe two dispersive orbital excitations, the 3d xy and the 3d yz orbitons. We carry out a quantitative comparison of the RIXS spectra, obtained with two distinct incident polarizations, with a theoretical model. We show that any realistic spin-orbital model needs to include a finite, but realistic, Hund's exchange J H ≈ 0.5 eV . Its main effect is an increase in orbiton velocities, so that their theoretically calculated values match those observed experimentally. Even though Hund's exchange also mediates some interaction between spinon and orbiton, the picture of spin-orbit separation remains intact and describes orbiton motion in this compound.

Doping Dependence of 2-Spinon Excitations in the Doped 1D Cuprate Ba 2 ⁢CuO 3+δ

Recent photoemission experiments on the quasi-one-dimensional Ba-based cuprates suggest that doped holes experience an attractive potential not captured using the simple Hubbard model. This observation has garnered significant attention due to its potential relevance to Cooper pair formation in high-T c cuprate superconductors. To scrutinize this assertion, we examined signatures of such an attractive potential in doped 1D cuprates Ba 2 ⁢CuO 3+δ by measuring the dispersion of the 2-spinon excitations using Cu L 3 -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Upon doping, the 2-spinon excitations appear to weaken, with a shift of the minimal position corresponding to the nesting vector of the Fermi points, q F . Notably, we find that the energy scale of the 2-spinons near the Brillouin zone boundary is substantially softened compared to that predicted by the Hubbard model in one dimension. Finally, such a discrepancy implies missing ingredients, which lends support for the presence of an additional attractive potential between holes.
