Tunable 1D and 2D Polyacrylonitrile Nanosheet Superstructures

Carbon superstructures are widely applied in energy and environment-related areas. Among them, the flower-like polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-derived carbon materials have shown great promise due to their high surface area, large pore volume, and improved mass transport. In this work, we report a versatile and straightforward method for synthesizing one-dimensional (1D) nanostructured fibers and two-dimensional (2D) nanostructured thin films based on flower-like PAN chemistry by taking advantage of the nucleation and growth behavior of PAN. The resulting nanofibers and thin films exhibited distinct morphologies with intersecting PAN nanosheets, which formed through rapid nucleation on existing PAN. We further constructed a variety of hierarchical PAN superstructures based on different templates, solvents, and concentrations. These PAN nanosheet superstructures can be readily converted to carbon superstructures. As a demonstration, the nanostructured thin film exhibited a contact angle of ~180° after surface modification with fluoroalkyl monolayers, which is attributed to high surface roughness enabled by the nanosheet assemblies. In conclusion, this study offers a strategy for the synthesis of nanostructured carbon materials for various applications.

Dynamic Interfacial Design in Adaptive Hybrid Materials Enables Reversible and Tunable Mechano-Optic Smart Responses

Next-generation polymeric materials are shifting toward adaptive and interactive behaviors of living systems; however, designing materials that can reversibly modulate optical properties under mechanical deformation while maintaining mechanical robustness remains a key challenge. Here, we report a mechanically robust vitrimer-based adaptive hybrid material (AHM) that exhibits a stretch-induced reversible transparency-to-opacity transition, enabled by the integration of dynamic interactions at the polymer–silica nanoparticle interface and controlled nanoparticle self-assembly. The AHM combines boronic ester–functionalized polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-polystyrene (S-Bpin) with diol-functionalized silica nanoparticles (diol-SiNPs) to form a hybrid network hosting both dynamic boronic ester and hydrogen-bonding interactions. These reversible linkages facilitate controlled nanoparticle self-assembly and enable strain-induced nanoparticle alignment/aggregation. Upon stretching, SiNP-rich domains align and aggregate within the polymer matrix, while local modulus mismatch between stiff aggregated SiNP/borylated-styrene-rich regions and the softer elastomeric midblock induces surface microwrinkle formation. These internal aggregates and surface wrinkles cooperatively enhance light scattering, producing the opaque state under strain. Furthermore, the tailored AHM exhibits high toughness, thermomechanical stability, reprocessability, and programmable shape-memory behavior. This work presents a dynamic interfacial design strategy for mechanically robust, optically reconfigurable, and reusable soft materials for adaptive optics, smart windows, sensing, soft robotics, and circular smart-material platforms.

Colloidal AInSe 2 (A = K, Rb, Cs) Nanocrystals with Tunable Crystal and Band Structures

Wide band gap AInSe 2 (A = K, Rb, Cs) is an important interlayer material for improving the efficiency of Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 (CIGS) solar cells. Compared to high-vacuum deposition and solid-state synthesis, a less energyintensive method is of interest for its fabrication. Herein, we present the rapid, low-temperature colloidal synthesis of AInSe 2 nanocrystals that opens a pathway for convenient solution processing. The crystal structures and electronic band structures of the nanocrystals were studied, and their particle morphology was found to be dependent on the choice of alkali metal and selenium precursors. Homogeneous solid solution (K,Rb,Cs)InSe 2 nanocrystals were synthesized using a mixture of alkali metal precursors. Their compositions, lattice parameters, and band gaps were easily tuned based on the K:Rb:Cs precursor ratio, providing potential for interface engineering of CIGS nanocrystal-based solar cells.

Tunable Semiconducting Behavior and Linear-Nonlinear Optical Properties of Ag–Sn Dual-Doped Nanocrystalline CdO Thin Films for Optoelectronics

Semiconductor-based thin films have a great impact on determining the anticipated optoelectronic device construction and the advancement of cutting-edge applications. Herein, Ag and Sn dual-doped nanocrystalline transparent conducting CdO thin films were prepared on glass substrates using a cost-effective spray coating method, and their structural, morphological, optical, and semiconducting behaviors were investigated. The successful incorporation of Ag and Sn resulted in the polycrystalline nature of the deposited films without the additional peaks, as verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The XRD report also revealed the enhanced crystallinity (65%) at the higher doping level (3 wt % Ag and Sn-doped CdO film). All the deposited CdO films exhibited homogeneous, spherical, or round-shaped grains, with agglomeration revealed by scanning electron microscopy analysis. UV–visible spectroscopy was utilized to determine the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the deposited CdO thin films, and a reduction in the band gap from 3.891 to 3.772 eV was observed. A significant enhancement in the first- and third-order nonlinear susceptibility and nonlinear refractive index of the doped CdO films was also observed with increasing doping concentration. Hall effect data were collected at room temperature to investigate the electrical properties of all of the CdO films. The charge carrier concentration of CdO thin films was increased from 142.08 × 10 18 to 169.10 × 10 18 cm –3 , and the highest conductivity was found to be 192 s/cm on doping 3 wt % Ag–Sn. All the CdO thin films exhibited n-type conductivity, while an incredible n-type to p-type charge carrier transition was noticed at a higher doping level (3 wt % Ag–Sn). The findings of the current work are expected to advance the synthesis of semiconductor thin films through cost-effective spray coating methods for optoelectronic device applications.

Tunable Collective Excitations in Epitaxial Perovskite Nickelates

The formation of plasmons through the collective excitation of charge density has generated intense discussions, offering insights to fundamental sciences and potential applications. While the underlying physical principles have been well-established, the effects of multibody interactions and orbital hybridization on plasmonic dynamics remain understudied. Here, in this work, we present the observation of conventional metallic and correlated plasmons in epitaxial La 1-x Sr x NiO 3 (LSNO) films with varying Sr doping concentrations (x = 0, 0.125, 0.25), unveiling their intriguing evolution. Unlike samples at other doping concentrations, the x = 0.125 intermediate doping sample does not exhibit the correlated plasmons despite showing high optical conductivity. Through experimental investigation using spectroscopic ellipsometry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, that is further supported by theoretical calculations, the O2p-Ni3d orbital hybridization for x = 0.125 is found to be significantly enhanced, alongside a considerable weakening of its effective interaction comprising long-range Coulomb and variable interaction, U*. These factors account for the absence of correlated plasmons and the high optical conductivity observed in LSNO(0.125). Our findings highlight the significant impact of orbital hybridization on the electronic structures and the formation of quasiparticles in strongly correlated systems, opening new paths for plasmonic-based engineering research.

Tunable Metasurface External-Cavity Quantum Cascade Lasers up to 5.74 THz

Vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers based on amplifying quantum-cascade metasurfaces are demonstrated in the 5–6 THz range for the first time. Enhanced parasitic coupling to lossy surface modes requires updated design guidelines, while elevated losses and lower available material gain limit the scaling of the metasurface period from previous designs. A series of metasurface devices with varying periods employing both uniform and focusing metasurfaces is fabricated and characterized. Reducing the metasurface period below 70% of the free-space wavelength enables devices with superior performance, achieving pulsed operation up to 5.74 THz with peak output powers of 1.3 mW, maximum operating temperatures up to 83 K, and continuous-wave operation up to 54 K with 23 μW of output power. In the best case, single-mode tuning from 5.23–5.73 THz, which corresponds to a 9.1% fractional tuning, is realized with near-Gaussian far-field profiles maintained across the entire range. Finally, these results establish quantum cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers as promising candidates for high-frequency local oscillator applications in heterodyne spectroscopy.

Ionic-liquid-Assisted Fabrication of Lignocellulosic Thin Films with Tunable Hydrophobicity

Thin films with enhanced water repellency and mechanical strength can be fabricated from renewable lignocellulosic feedstock as a replacement for petrochemical-derived synthetic polymers, such that it minimizes life cycle impact on the environment and human health. In this work, hybrid poplar wood, either untreated (control) or pretreated with hot water at 160 °C for 20 min (HWE-20), 60 min (HWE-60), and 90 min (HWE-90), was dissolved in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate and regenerated to fabricate thin films. The HWE-90 films were enriched in lignin by 74%, specifically on the surface, which along with hemicellulose depletion imparted hydrophobicity (108° water contact angle) when compared to the control (56°), HWE-20 (77°), and HWE-60 (84°) films. They also exhibited 86% reduced water vapor sorption hysteresis and 75% improved storage modulus compared to the control. Thus, we demonstrate how to tune the lignocellulosic film properties via a combination of hot water pretreatment and ionic liquid dissolution.

Activity of Silica-Alumina for the Conversion of Polyethylene into Tunable Aromatics Below Pyrolytic Temperatures

Plastic waste is a mounting problem that lacks global strategy, largely due to inadequate recycling capabilities. One alternative gaining traction in the heterogeneous catalysis community is the upcycling of polyolefins into value-added products, such as hydrogen-free conversion to alkylaromatic compounds over Pt/Al 2 O 3 . Here, we examined the activity of nominally metal-free, mesoporous silica-alumina mixed oxide materials (SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 ) for the conversion of polyethylene into aromatic compounds at temperatures of and below 280 °C. Yields with the silica-alumina catalysts are comparable to those obtained over Pt(1 wt %)/Al 2 O 3 under identical conditions, and product selectivity can be tuned by altering reaction conditions or the acid site density of the SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 . Notably, the fraction of polyaromatic products increases with the Brønsted acid site density of the catalyst, as does the degree of polymer deconstruction. These catalysts can be reused without regeneration, and their activity improves with each recycling event, producing soluble product yields up to 83%. Preliminary work on the mechanism of the reaction suggests that acid sites are responsible for initiating depolymerization and aromatization reactions, in analogy to previous work in the literature. Finally, this work showcases the activity of SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 for polyolefin deconstruction/aromatization at subpyrolytic temperatures and lays the foundation for future studies involving solid acid and bifunctional catalysts.

Tunable and Degradable Dynamic Thermosets from Compatibilized Polyhydroxyalkanoate Blends

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are versatile, biobased polyesters that are often targeted for use as degradable thermoplastic replacements for polyolefins. Given the substantial chemical diversity of PHA, their potential as cross-linked polymers could also enable similar platforms for reversible, degradable thermosets. In this work, we genetically engineered Pseudomonas putida KT2440 to synthesize poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyundecenoate) (PHBU), which contains both 3-hydroxybutyrate and unsaturated 3-hydroxyundecenoate components. To reduce the brittleness of this polymer, we physically blended PHBU with the soft copolymer poly(3-hydroxydecanonate-co-3-hydroxyundecenoate) in mass ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1. Upon observing varying degrees of immiscibility by scanning electron microscopy, we installed dynamic boronic ester cross-links via thiol–ene click chemistry, which resulted in compatibilized dynamic thermoset blends ranging in hard, medium, and soft rubber or elastomer thermomechanical profiles. These dynamic thermoset blends were subjected to controlled biological degradation experiments in freshwater conditions, achieving timely mass loss despite the cross-linked architectures. Overall, this work highlights a two-component platform for the production of degradable and reprocessable dynamic thermoset blends suitable for several classes of cross-linked polymer technologies from tailored, biological PHA copolymers.

Tunable Broad Light Emission from 3D “Hollow” Bromide Perovskites through Defect Engineering

We report hybrid halide perovskites consisting of corner-sharing metal halide octahedra and small cuboctahedral cages filled with counter cations have proven to be prominent candidates for many high-performance optoelectronic devices. The stability limits of their three-dimensional perovskite framework are defined by the size range of the cations present in the cages of the structure. In some cases, the stability of the perovskite-type structure can be extended even when the counterions violate the size and shape requirements, as is the case in the so-called "hollow" perovskites. In this work, we engineered a new family of 3D highly defective yet crystalline "hollow" bromide perovskites with general formula (FA) 1-x (en) x (Pb) 1-0.7x (Br) 3-0.4x (FA = formamidinium (FA + ), en = ethylenediammonium (en 2+ ), x = 0-0.44). Pair distribution function analysis shed light on the local structural coherence, revealing a wide distribution of Pb-Pb distances in the crystal structure as a consequence of the Pb/Br-deficient nature and en inclusion in the lattice. By manipulating the number of Pb/Br vacancies, we finely tune the optical properties of the pristine FAPbBr 3 by blue shifting the band gap from 2.20 to 2.60 eV for the x = 0.42 en sample. A most unexpected outcome was that at x > 0.33 en incorporation, the material exhibits strong broad light emission (1% photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY)) that is maintained after exposure to air for more than a year. This is the first example of strong broad light emission from a 3D hybrid halide perovskite, demonstrating that meticulous defect engineering is an excellent tool for customizing the optical properties of these semiconductors.
