Three-Dimensional Finite Element Ablative Thermal Response and Thermostructural Design of Thermal Protection Systems

A finite element ablation and thermal response program is presented for simulation of three-dimensional transient thermostructural analysis. The three-dimensional governing differential equations and finite element formulation are summarized. A novel probabilistic design methodology for thermal protection systems is presented. The design methodology is an eight step process beginning with a parameter sensitivity study and is followed by a deterministic analysis whereby an optimum design can determined. The design process concludes with a Monte Carlo simulation where the probabilities of exceeding design specifications are estimated. The design methodology is demonstrated by applying the methodology to the carbon phenolic compression pads of the Crew Exploration Vehicle. The maximum allowed values of bondline temperature and tensile stress are used as the design specifications in this study.

Thermal Model Predictions of Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator Performance

This paper presents recent thermal model results of the Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator (ASRG). The three-dimensional (3D) ASRG thermal power model was built using the Thermal Desktop(trademark) thermal analyzer. The model was correlated with ASRG engineering unit test data and ASRG flight unit predictions from Lockheed Martin's (LM's) I-deas(trademark) TMG thermal model. The auxiliary cooling system (ACS) of the ASRG is also included in the ASRG thermal model. The ACS is designed to remove waste heat from the ASRG so that it can be used to heat spacecraft components. The performance of the ACS is reported under nominal conditions and during a Venus flyby scenario. The results for the nominal case are validated with data from Lockheed Martin. Transient thermal analysis results of ASRG for a Venus flyby with a representative trajectory are also presented. In addition, model results of an ASRG mounted on a Cassini-like spacecraft with a sunshade are presented to show a way to mitigate the high temperatures of a Venus flyby. It was predicted that the sunshade can lower the temperature of the ASRG alternator by 20 C for the representative Venus flyby trajectory. The 3D model also was modified to predict generator performance after a single Advanced Stirling Convertor failure. The geometry of the Microtherm HT insulation block on the outboard side was modified to match deformation and shrinkage observed during testing of a prototypic ASRG test fixture by LM. Test conditions and test data were used to correlate the model by adjusting the thermal conductivity of the deformed insulation to match the post-heat-dump steady state temperatures. Results for these conditions showed that the performance of the still-functioning inboard ACS was unaffected.

Dynamic Analyses of the Proposed Habitable Exoplanet Astrophysics Facility

The proposed Habitable Exoplanet (HabEx) astrophysics facility is one of four large such facilities being proposed to the 2020 decadal. It is a large telescope that is sensitive to ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared photons. The proposed design’s overall length is on the order of 17.2 m and its maximum cross section is on the order of 5.25 X 5.25 m. The primary mirror is 4 m in diameter. A transient dynamic analysis was performed to estimate the order of magnitude of ring down time after moving the telescope and pointing at a new target for science planning purposes. Without uncertainty factors, results from a simple re-pointing maneuver indicate that primary to secondary mirror LOS errors are on the order of 10-4 pico-m after 5 minutes. Also, a frequency response analysis was performed to predict the impact of planned micro-thruster vibrations on required stability. Based on provided noise level associated with the micro-thrusters and loading assumptions and without uncertainty factors, the assessed vibrations do not impact predicted performance requirements.

The dynamics of a flexible bladed disc on a flexible rotor in a two-rotor system

This paper describes the development of the analysis of the transient dynamic response of a bladed disk on a flexible rotor. The rotating flexible bladed disk is considered as a module in a complete turbine engine structure. The analysis of the flexible bladed disk (FBD) module is developed for the non-equilibrated one-diameter axial mode. The FBD motion is considered as a sum of two standing axial waves constrained to the rotor. The FBD is coupled inertially and gyroscopically to its rotor support, and indirectly through connecting elements, to the adjacent rotor and/or other supporting structures. Incorporated in the basic Turbine Engine Transient Response Analysis program (TETRA), the FBD module is demonstrated with a two-rotor model where the FBD can be excited into resonance by an unbalance in the adjacent rotor and at a frequency equal to the differential rotor speed. The FBD module also allows the analysis of two flexible bladed disks in the same rotor.

Transient heat and fluid flow in porous annuli

An analysis of the transient behavior of heat and fluid flow in porous annuli is reported. The problem analyzed has relevance to the design of adsorption compressors. Consideration is given to filling a porous annulus with a fluid while cooling is applied. The governing equations for the transport process considered have been solved numerically using a finite-difference method. A parametric study has been conducted to reveal the influence of the different parameters. The conditions for maximizing the mass intake are identified.

Linear and nonlinear dynamic analysis by boundary element method

An advanced implementation of the direct boundary element method (BEM) applicable to free-vibration, periodic (steady-state) vibration and linear and nonlinear transient dynamic problems involving two and three-dimensional isotropic solids of arbitrary shape is presented. Interior, exterior, and half-space problems can all be solved by the present formulation. For the free-vibration analysis, a new real variable BEM formulation is presented which solves the free-vibration problem in the form of algebraic equations (formed from the static kernels) and needs only surface discretization. In the area of time-domain transient analysis, the BEM is well suited because it gives an implicit formulation. Although the integral formulations are elegant, because of the complexity of the formulation it has never been implemented in exact form. In the present work, linear and nonlinear time domain transient analysis for three-dimensional solids has been implemented in a general and complete manner. The formulation and implementation of the nonlinear, transient, dynamic analysis presented here is the first ever in the field of boundary element analysis. Almost all the existing formulation of BEM in dynamics use the constant variation of the variables in space and time which is very unrealistic for engineering problems and, in some cases, it leads to unacceptably inaccurate results. In the present work, linear and quadratic isoparametric boundary elements are used for discretization of geometry and functional variations in space. In addition, higher order variations in time are used. These methods of analysis are applicable to piecewise-homogeneous materials, such that not only problems of the layered media and the soil-structure interaction can be analyzed but also a large problem can be solved by the usual sub-structuring technique. The analyses have been incorporated in a versatile, general-purpose computer program. Some numerical problems are solved and, through comparisons with available analytical and numerical results, the stability and high accuracy of these dynamic analysis techniques are established.

Comprehensive Structural Dynamic Analysis of the SSME/AT Fuel Pump First-Stage Turbine Blade

A detailed structural dynamic analysis of the Pratt & Whitney high-pressure fuel pump first-stage turbine blades has been performed to identify the cause of the tip cracking found in the turbomachinery in November 1997. The analysis was also used to help evaluate potential fixes for the problem. Many of the methods available in structural dynamics were applied, including modal displacement and stress analysis, frequency and transient response to tip loading from the first-stage Blade Outer Gas Seals (BOGS), fourier analysis, and shock spectra analysis of the transient response. The primary findings were that the BOGS tip loading is impulsive in nature, thereby exciting many modes of the blade that exhibit high stress at the tip cracking location. Therefore, a proposed BOGS count change would not help the situation because a clearly identifiable resonance situation does not exist. The recommendations for the resolution of the problem are to maintain the existing BOGS count, eliminate the stress concentration in the blade due to its geometric design, and reduce the applied load on the blade by adding shiplaps in the BOGS.

Transient Three-Dimensional Side Load Analysis of Out-of-Round Film Cooled Nozzles

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of nozzle out-of-roundness on the transient startup side loads. The out-of-roundness could be the result of asymmetric loads induced by hardware attached to the nozzle, asymmetric internal stresses induced by previous tests and/or deformation, such as creep, from previous tests. The rocket engine studied encompasses a regeneratively cooled thrust chamber and a film cooled nozzle extension with film coolant distributed from a turbine exhaust manifold. The computational methodology is based on an unstructured-grid, pressure-based computational fluid dynamics formulation, and a transient inlet history based on an engine system simulation. Transient startup computations were performed with the out-of-roundness achieved by four degrees of ovalization of the nozzle: one perfectly round, one slightly out-of-round, one more out-of-round, and one significantly out-of-round. The computed side load physics caused by the nozzle out-of-roundness and its effect on nozzle side load are reported and discussed.

Transient Three-Dimensional Side Load Analysis of Out-of-Round Film Cooled Nozzles

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of nozzle out-of-roundness on the transient startup side loads at a high altitude, with an anchored computational methodology. The out-of-roundness could be the result of asymmetric loads induced by hardware attached to the nozzle, asymmetric internal stresses induced by previous tests, and deformation, such as creep, from previous tests. Transient startup computations were performed with the out-of-roundness achieved by four different degrees of ovalization: one perfectly round, one slightly out-of-round, one more out-of-round, and one significantly out-of-round. The results show that the separation-line-jump is the peak side load physics for the round, slightly our-of-round, and more out-of-round cases, and the peak side load increases as the degree of out-of-roundness increases. For the significantly out-of-round nozzle, however, the peak side load reduces to comparable to that of the round nozzle and the separation line jump is not the peak side load physics. The counter-intuitive result of the significantly out-of-round case is found to be related to a side force reduction mechanism that splits the effect of the separation-line-jump into two parts, not only in the circumferential direction and most importantly in time.

Transient unbalance response of four multilobe journal bearings

This work carries out an analysis of the transient response of four multilobe journal bearings (elliptical, offset, three-lobe, and four-lobe) subject to unbalance both below and above the linearized stability thresholds for the bearings. It extends the work of a previous paper on a balanced rotor in the same four bearing types. Transient orbits, bearing forces, and a numerical fast Fourier transform analysis of the orbits are presented. A comparison of bearing forces above the stability threshold for each bearing indicates that the elliptical bearing has the most violent whirl vibration amplitudes, while the offset bearing exhibits the least amount of subsynchronous vibration.

Transient radiative cooling of a layer filled with solidifying drops

An analysis is carried out for radiative cooling of a plane layer initially filled with liquid drops that solidify and then continue to cool by loss of sensible heat. This is in connection with a proposed lightweight radiator system for heat dissipation in space. Hot liquid drops would be ejected and then cooled by direct exposure in space; they would then pass into a collector for reuse. The cooling analysis contains three transient zones. In the first, the drops cool by losing latent heat until the outermost drops become solid. Then the cooling continues by loss of both latent and sensible heat. A similarity behavior is eventually achieved in which the transient emittance of the layer depends only on the optical thickness.
