Apollo experience report: Command and service module communications subsystem

The development of spacecraft communications hardware from design to operation is described. Programs, requirements, specifications, and design approaches for a variety of functions (such as voice, telemetry, television, and antennas) are reviewed. Equipment environmental problems such as vibration, extreme temperature variation, and zero gravity are discussed. A review of the development of managerial techniques used in refining the roles of prime and subcontractors is included. The hardware test program is described in detail as it progressed from breadboard design to manned flight system evaluations. Finally, a series of actions is recommended to managers of similar projects to facilitate administration.

System design of the Pioneer Venus spacecraft. Volume 6: Power subsystem studies

Selection of a baseline power subsystem for the probe bus, orbiter, and large and small probes has been performed as a part of the Pioneer Venus Mission Systems Design Study. In each case the selection process has involved trades and incorporated the results of previous related studies. Factors considered primary in the selection of each subsystem approach were cost, and the ability of each of the proposed subsystems to perform reliably under the rigors of the space environment, temperature extremes, and high g loads. A trade was made to consider the advantages of an unregulated primary bus versus a regulated bus. The decision to use an unregulated bus was based on cost, weight, and the increase in load isolation achievable through the use of individual load regulators.

Environmental test report for the WX-32335 SEC camera tube

The environmental testing activity on the WX-32335 was carried out to determine if this tube type could withstand the environmental requirements established for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) camera tube (WX-32224). The results of the tests led to the following conclusions: (1) The WX-32335 as processed with a CsTe photocathode surface can withstand the temperature extremes established for the IUE camera tube without damage to the photocathode surface or without introducing background signal in the tube after one hour of dark integration. (2) The WX-32335 built with a WX-32224 type target support structure can withstand the sinusoidal vibration requirements established for the IUE camera tube. (3) Although the vibration test of the WX-32335 type tubes built with the flat target ring structure could not be completed, there was no indication that these tubes could not withstand the sinusoidal vibration requirements established for the IUE camera tube.

Acoustic chamber for weightless positioning

The objective of this work is to perfect and extend the acoustic position technique that was developed at JPL for use in the future Space Processing Laboratory in Space. The main effort is centered on design of a position device for processing of molten materials. Namely, a resonator has the capability of positioning in an extreme temperature gradient and a frequency servo loop to maintain it there as the temperature varies.

The chemical composition and distribution of interstellar grains

The chemical composition of interstellar grains is derived here on the basis of (1) the cosmic abundance of the elements; (2) the wavelength dependence of extinction and polarization; (3) the average total extinction; (4) the ratio of polarization to extinction; (5) the predominantly dielectric character of grains in the visible spectral region; and (6) infrared spectral characteristics of grains. Inferences of the core-mantle model with respect to spatial distribution are consistent with the proposition that growth of the mantles occurs in the galactic shock region predicted by the density-wave theory. Estimates of the total visual extinction toward the galactic center and the consequent estimates of the total amount of far infrared radiation are shown to depend critically on the grain model. Variations of the ratio of far ultraviolet to visual extinction are correlated with the conditions for growth of mantles on the bare small particles which are generally prevented from accreting mantles primarily because of their extreme temperature fluctuations produced by the ultraviolet photons in the radiation field.

Shuttle ECLSS ammonia delivery capability

The possible effects of excessive requirements on ammonia flow rates required for entry cooling, due to extreme temperatures, on mission plans for the space shuttles, were investigated. An analysis of worst case conditions was performed, and indicates that adequate flow rates are available. No mission impact is therefore anticipated.

Considerations in STS payload environmental verification

Considerations regarding the Space Transportation System (STS) payload environmental verification are reviewed. It is noted that emphasis is placed on testing at the subassembly level and that the basic objective of structural dynamic payload verification is to ensure reliability in a cost-effective manner. Structural analyses consist of: (1) stress analysis for critical loading conditions, (2) model analysis for launch and orbital configurations, (3) flight loads analysis, (4) test simulation analysis to verify models, (5) kinematic analysis of deployment/retraction sequences, and (6) structural-thermal-optical program analysis. In addition to these approaches, payload verification programs are being developed in the thermal-vacuum area. These include the exposure to extreme temperatures, temperature cycling, thermal-balance testing and thermal-vacuum testing.

Friction coefficients of PTFE bearing liner

Data discusses frictional characteristics of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) under temperature extremes and in vacuum environment. Tests were also run on reduced scale hardware to determine effects of vacuum. Data is used as reference by designers of aircraft-control system rod-end bearings and for bearings used in polar regions.

Thermal insulation attaching means

An improved isolation system is provided for attaching ceramic tiles of insulating material to the surface of a structure to be protected against extreme temperatures of the nature expected to be encountered by the space shuttle orbiter. This system isolates the fragile ceramic tiles from thermally and mechanically induced vehicle structural strains. The insulating tiles are affixed to a felt isolation pad formed of closely arranged and randomly oriented fibers by means of a flexible adhesive and in turn the felt pad is affixed to the metallic vehicle structure by an additional layer of flexible adhesive.

Feasibility Study of Solar Dome Encapsulation of Photovoltaic Arrays

The technical and economic advantages of using air-supported plastic enclosures to protect flat plate photovoltaic arrays are described. Conceptual designs for a fixed, latitude-tilt array and a fully tracking array were defined. Detailed wind loads and strength analyses were performed for the fixed array. Detailed thermal and power output analyses provided array performance for typical seasonal and extreme temperature conditions. Costs of each design as used in a 200 MWe central power station were defined from manufacturing and material cost estimates. The capital cost and cost of energy for the enclosed fixed-tilt array were lower than for the enclosed tracking array. The enclosed fixed-tilt array capital investment was 38% less, and the levelized bus bar energy cost was 26% less than costs for a conventional, glass-encapsulated array design. The predicted energy cost for the enclosed fixed array was 79 mills/kW-h for direct current delivered to the power conditioning units.

Bayonet plug with ramp-activated lock

Matched pair of washers with broad surface ramps is locking mechanism in bayonet plug. It can be used where threaded springs and fasteners are impractical because of extreme temperatures or other environmental incompatibility. Matched pair of ramped washers is placed on plug and bayonet inserted. Inner slot of one washer matches contour of plug; this washer is stationary. Inner slot of second washer is circular. When second washer is rotated, washers push against bayonet plug, locking it in place. Retaining wire secures plug.

Self-lubricating gearset

Gearset fabricated from molybdenum sulfide filled polyimide allows attention-free operation in vacuum and at extreme temperatures. Ring gear drives pinion gear on shaft in skewed-axis arrangement. Because loads are shared among multiple meshing teeth, self-lubricating material is strong enough to accomodate high gear ratio.

Prolonging the Life of Refractory Fillers

Useful life of refractory glass-cloth gap filler is increased by coating it with a suspension of silicon carbide in butanol and polyethylene. Coating is applied to refractory-fiber cloth filler that seals gaps between insulating tiles on Space Shuttle orbiter. Tests showed that cloth fibers would be embrittled by extreme temperatures encountered on reentry into Earth's atmosphere and that only 25 percent of the thousands of fillers would be reusable after a mission. With coating, 85 percent of fillers would be reusable.
