Analytical model of the combustion of multicomponent solid propellants

Multiple flame models derived for simple composite propellants are extended to describe the combustion of propellants containing multimodal particle sizes, mixed oxidizers and monopropellant binders. Models combining the component contributions to propellant surface structure, flame structure and energy distribution are based in part upon experimental observations and in part upon hypotheses constrained to provide reasonable agreement with measured burning rate characteristics. The methods employed consist of superposition, interaction and iteration. The computerized model is applied to explain the effects of multiple ingredients and to discuss burning rate tailoring problems of current interest.

Pilot evaluation of an advanced hingeless rotor XY-15 simulation

A piloted simulation of an advanced hingeless rotor XV-15 tilt-rotor aircraft was carried out. The evaluation was made by a pilot from NASA-Ames who had previous experience flying a simulation of the current gimballed rotor NASA/Army XV-15. It was pointed out that some modifications to the force feel system were needed in order to provide rapid force trimming during rapid maneuvers. Some additional tailoring of the SCAS system was required to achieve good nap-of-the-earth performance. Overall pilot opinion on the hingeless rotor XV-15 tilt rotor was favorable. Brief discussion on the mathematical models and the simulator configuration are presented. The maneuvers and pilot comments are given along with some engineering comments.

Summary of the NASA space photovoltaic research and technology program

Low cost solar cells and arrays with high end-of-life efficiency are evaluated through two approaches: one, to obtain increased device efficiency at no increase in cost and two, to reduce the manufacturing costs of space solar cells and arrays. Technology efforts encompass high efficiency epitaxial cells, high efficiency wraparound contact solar cells, economical diffusion sources, automated cell fabrication and development of easily applied, durable cover glasses. The examination of ion-implanted profile tailored junctions and additional development of screen printed contact technology to cell development are also considered.

Survey: National Meteorological Center

The National Meteorological Center (NMC) is comprised of three operational divisions (Development, Automation, and Forecast) and an Administrative Division. The Development Division develops and implements mathematical models for forecasting the weather. The Automation Division provides the software and processing services to accommodate the models used in daily forecasts. The Forecasting Division applies a combination of numerical and manual techniques to produce analyses and prognoses up to 120 hr into the future. This guidance material is combined with severe storm information from the National Hurricane Center and the National Severe Storms Forecasting Center to develop locally tailored forecasts by the Weather Service Forecast Offices and, in turn, by the local Weather Service Offices. A very general flow of this information is shown. A more detailed illustration of data flow into, within, and from the NMC is given. The interrelations are depicted between the various meteorological organizations and activities.

Theory of flux anisotropies in a guiding center plasma

The one particle distribution function f on the scale of the bounce motion of particles in a magnetic field B is considered. The Vlasov equation is expanded through O(epsilon) in the adiabatic parameter which is the ratio of particle gyroradius to scale length of the magnetic field. Because f is directly proportional to particle flux differential in kinetic energy and solid angle, f is in principle measurable in space experiments, and the analysis is tailored to be explicitly applicable to space problems. To O(1), f is gyrotropic; its first velocity moment is (if non-vanishing) parallel to B, and hence macroscopic parallel flow is included in this term. The O(epsilon) contribution is non-gyrotropic and macroscopic flow parallel to B plus additional parallel flow results from these terms. The degree of non-gyrotropy and the amount of cross-field macroscopic flow depend on the perpendicular component of the electric field, on curvature and shear in the magnetic field, and on the spatial gradient, pitch angle derivative, and speed derivative of the lowest order distribution function.

An inverter/controller subsystem optimized for photovoltaic applications

Conversion of solar array dc power to ac power stimulated the specification, design, and simulation testing of an inverter/controller subsystem tailored to the photovoltaic power source characteristics. Optimization of the inverter/controller design is discussed as part of an overall photovoltaic power system designed for maximum energy extraction from the solar array. The special design requirements for the inverter/ controller include: a power system controller (PSC) to control continuously the solar array operating point at the maximum power level based on variable solar insolation and cell temperatures; and an inverter designed for high efficiency at rated load and low losses at light loadings to conserve energy.

A data management system for engineering and scientific computing

Data elements and relationship definition capabilities for this data management system are explicitly tailored to the needs of engineering and scientific computing. System design was based upon studies of data management problems currently being handled through explicit programming. The system-defined data element types include real scalar numbers, vectors, arrays and special classes of arrays such as sparse arrays and triangular arrays. The data model is hierarchical (tree structured). Multiple views of data are provided at two levels. Subschemas provide multiple structural views of the total data base and multiple mappings for individual record types are supported through the use of a REDEFINES capability. The data definition language and the data manipulation language are designed as extensions to FORTRAN. Examples of the coding of real problems taken from existing practice in the data definition language and the data manipulation language are given.

A special purpose symbolic manipulation program for the derivation of the equations of motion for large flexible structures

This paper outlines a computer program especially tailored to the task of deriving explicit equations of motion for structures with point-connected substructures. The special purpose program is written in FORTRAN and is designed for performing the specific algebraic operations encountered in the derivation of explicit equations of motion. The derivation is by the Lagrangian approach. Using an orderly kinematical procedure and a discretization and/or truncation scheme, it is possible to write the kinetic and potential energy of each substructure in a compact vector-matrix form. Then, if each element of the matrices and vectors encountered in the kinetic and potential energy is a known algebraic expression, the computer program performs the necessary operations to evaluate the kinetic and potential energy of the system explicitly. Lagrange's equations for small motions about equilibrium can be deduced directly from the explicit form of the system kinetic and potential energy.

Long Duration Exposure Facility - A unique mode of Shuttle utilization

The Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) is a Shuttle-transported, reusable, essentially passive facility with accommodations for a wide variety of experiments which require a free-flying carrier for exposure in space. Specifically, the LDEF is tailored to provide low-cost accommodations for experiments which have modest requirements for electrical power and data systems, and for experiments which benefit from postflight laboratory investigations with the retrieved experiment hardware. Each experiment for LDEF will be totally self-contained in a tray. As the interface with the facility has been minimized, the LDEF experimenters will be freed from many of the requirements which have complicated development of space experiments in the past.

A new technique for reducing test section noise in supersonic wind tunnels

A new technique is presented for obtaining a low-noise test environment in a high-speed wind tunnel. This technique utilizes the fact that the primary noise source for high supersonic/hypersonic wind tunnels is radiated noise from the turbulent, tunnel-wall boundary layer. Because of the high directionality of sound in supersonic flows this test section noise originates far upstream on the walls of the nozzle at the 'acoustic origin'. It is shown that tailoring the nozzle contour to reduce the acoustic origin Mach number significantly reduces the noise level in the upstream half of the nozzle test rhombus. Experimental noise measurements are presented from a conventional, Mach 5 nozzle and are compared with measurements from a rapid-expansion, Mach 5 nozzle.

Precision orbit computations for Starlette

The Starlette satellite, launched in February 1975 was designed to minimize the effects of nongravitational forces and to obtain the highest possible accuracy for laser range measurements. Analyses of the first four months of laser tracking data from nine stations have confirmed the stability of the orbit and the precision to which the satellite's position can be established. Initial orbit computations using the GSFC GEM - 7 gravity model produced rms fits of about 8 to 10 meters for arc lengths of 5 days. After tailoring a gravity model specifically to Starlette, the rms fits for the 5 day arcs were reduced significantly to the 1 to 2 meter level. An rms fit of 4.3 meters was obtained for a 90 day arc. Five day arcs overlapped by 2.5 days showed rms satellite position differences generally less than 2 meters. Prediction errors at the end of two months were less than 30 milliseconds.

The effect of prefilter design on sample rate selection in digital flight control systems

The effect of prefilters on sample rate selection is examined and design procedures are determined for obtaining the best combination of prefilter breakpoint and sample rate. The employed approach involves a quantitative comparison of the output noise response of systems originating from the same basic plant and designed over a wide range of prefilters and sample rates. Each system design was carefully tailored so that it exhibited approximately identical responses to commands. The results presented augment the criteria for sample rate selection which have been discussed by Powell and Katz (1975). Attention is given to system characteristics, an integrator as a plant, and the short period motion of the F-8 aircraft.
