Search for the Decays B s 0 → τ + τ - and B 0 → τ + τ -

A search for the rare decays $B^0_s$→$τ$ + $τ$ - and $B$ 0 →$τ$ + $τ$ - is performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb -1 collected in 2011 and 2012. The $τ$ leptons are reconstructed through the decay $τ$ - →$π$ - $π$ + $π$ - $ν$ $τ$ . Assuming no contribution from B 0 →$τ$ + $τ$ - decays, an upper limit is set on the branching fraction $B$($B^0_s$→$τ$ + $τ$ - ) < 6.8×10-3 at the 95% confidence level. If instead no contribution from $B^0_s$→$τ$ + $τ$ - decays is assumed, the limit is $B$($B$ 0 →$τ$ + $τ$ - ) < 2.1×10 -3 at the 95% confidence level. These results correspond to the first direct limit on $B$($B^0_s$→$τ$+$τ$-) and the world's best limit on $B$($B$ 0 →$τ$ + $τ$ - ).

Observation of the Decays Λ b 0 → χ c 1 p K - and Λ b 0 → χ c 2 p K -

The first observation of the decays Λ$^0_b$ → $χ$ c1 $pK$ - and Λ$^0_b$ → $χ$ c2 $pK$ - is reported using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb -1 , collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The following ratios of branching fractions are measured: $$\frac{\mathscr{B}(Λ^0_b→Χ_{c1}pK^-)}{\mathscr{B}(Λ^0_b→J/ψpK^-)}=0.242 ± 0.014 ± 0.013 ± 0.009$$ $$\frac{\mathscr{B}(Λ^0_b→Χ_{c2}pK^-)}{\mathscr{B}(Λ^0_b→J/ψpK^-)}= 0.248 ± 0.020 ± 0.014 ± 0.009$$ $$\frac{\mathscr{B}(Λ^0_b→Χ_{c2}pK^-)}{\mathscr{B}(Λ^0_b→Χ_{c1}pK^-)}= 1.02 ± 0.10 ± 0.02 ± 0.05$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the branching fractions of the $Χ_{c1}$ → $Jψγ$ and $Χ_{c2}$ → $Jψγ$ decays. Using both decay modes, the mass of the Λ$^0_b$ baryon is also measured to be $m$ Λ$^0_b$ = 5619.44 ± 0.28 ± 0.26 MeV/$c$ 2 , where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Search for Low Mass Vector Resonances Decaying to Quark-Antiquark Pairs in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$

A search is reported for a narrow vector resonance decaying to quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.7 fb-1. The vector resonance is produced at large transverse momenta, with its decay products merged into a single jet. The resulting signature is a peak over background in the distribution of the invariant mass of the jet. The results are interpreted in the framework of a leptophobic vector resonance and no evidence is found for such particles in the mass range of 100–300 GeV. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the production cross section are presented in a region of mass-coupling phase space previously unexplored at the LHC. The region below 140 GeV has not been explored by any previous experiments.

Search for Charged Higgs Bosons Produced via Vector Boson Fusion and Decaying into a Pair of $W$ and $Z$ Bosons Using $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$

A search for charged Higgs bosons produced via vector boson fusion and decaying into W and Z bosons using proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 15.2 fb-1 collected with the CMS detector in 2015 and 2016. The event selection requires three leptons (electrons or muons), two jets with large pseudorapidity separation and high dijet mass, and missing transverse momentum. The observation agrees with the standard model prediction. Limits on the vector boson fusion production cross section times branching fraction for new charged physical states are reported as a function of mass from 200 to 2000 GeV and interpreted in the context of Higgs triplet models.

Observation of top quark production in proton-nucleus collisions

The first observation of top quark production in proton-nucleus collisions is reported using proton-lead data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of sNN=8.16 TeV. The measurement is performed using events with exactly one isolated electron or muon candidate and at least four jets. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 174 nb-1. The significance of the tt¯ signal against the background-only hypothesis is above 5 standard deviations. The measured cross section is σtt¯=45±8 nb, consistent with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Search for Dark Photons Produced in 13 TeV p p Collisions

Searches are performed for both promptlike and long-lived dark photons, A ', produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using A ' → μ + μ - decays and a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb -1 collected with the LHCb detector. The promptlike A ' search covers the mass range from near the dimuon threshold up to 70 GeV, while the long-lived A; search is restricted to the low-mass region 214 < m ( A ') < 350 MeV. No evidence for a signal is found, and 90% confidence level exclusion limits are placed on the γ– A ' kinetic-mixing strength. The constraints placed on prompt like dark photons are the most stringent to date for the mass range 10.6 < m ( A ') < 70 GeV, and are comparable to the best existing limits for m ( A ') < 0.5 GeV. The search for long-lived dark photons is the first to achieve sensitivity using a displaced-vertex signature.

Inclusive search for a highly boosted Higgs boson decaying to a bottom quark-antiquark pair

An inclusive search for the standard model Higgs boson (H) produced with large transverse momentum (pT) and decaying to a bottom quark-antiquark pair (bb¯) is performed using a data set of pp collisions at s=13 TeV collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. A highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs boson decaying to bb¯ is reconstructed as a single, large radius jet, and it is identified using jet substructure and dedicated b tagging techniques. The method is validated with Z→bb¯ decays. The Z→bb¯ process is observed for the first time in the single-jet topology with a local significance of 5.1 standard deviations (5.8 expected). For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, an excess of events above the expected background is observed (expected) with a local significance of 1.5 (0.7) standard deviations. The measured cross section times branching fraction for production via gluon fusion of H→bb¯ with reconstructed pT>450 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range -2.5<η<2.5 is 74±48(stat)-10+17(syst) fb, which is consistent within uncertainties with the standard model prediction.

Search for Low-Mass Quark-Antiquark Resonances Produced in Association with a Photon at $\sqrt{s} = 13 \mathrm{ TeV}$

A search for narrow low-mass resonances decaying to quark-antiquark pairs is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collisions events collected at 13 TeV by the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\mathrm{35.9 fb^{-1}}$, recorded in 2016. The search considers the case where the resonance has high transverse momentum due to initial-state radiation of a photon. To study this process, the decay products of the resonance are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet with two-pronged substructure. The signal is identified as a localized excess in the jet invariant mass spectrum. No evidence for such a resonance is observed in the mass range 10 to 125 GeV. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the coupling strength of vector resonances decaying to quark pairs. The results obtained with this novel technique provide the first direct constraints on quark-antiquark resonance masses below 50 GeV obtained at a hadron collider.

First Observation of a Doubly Charged Tetraquark and Its Neutral Partner

A combined amplitude analysis is performed for the decays $B^0$ → $\overline{D}$ 0 $D_s^+$$π^–$ and $B^+$ → $D^–$$D_s^+$$π^+$, which are related by isospin symmetry. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 . Two new resonant states with masses of 2.908 ± 0.011 ± 0.020 GeV and widths of 0.136 ± 0.023 ± 0.013 GeV are observed, which decay to $D_s^+$$π^+$ and $D_s^+$$π^–$ respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content [c$\overline{s}$u$\overline{d}$], and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of [c$\overline{s}$$\overline{u}$d] quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity of 0 + , and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests that they belong to an isospin triplet.

Observation of Same-Sign W W Production from Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The first observation of the production of W$^\pm$W$^\pm$ bosons from double parton scattering processes using same-sign electron-muon and dimuon events in proton-proton collisions is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Multivariate discriminants are used to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds. A binned maximum likelihood fit is performed to extract the signal cross section. The measured cross section for production of same-sign W bosons decaying leptonically is 80.7 $\pm$ 11.2 (stat) $^{+9.5}_{-8.6}$ (syst) $\pm$ 12.1 (model) fb, whereas the measured fiducial cross section is 6.28 $\pm$ 0.81 (stat) $\pm$ 0.69 (syst) $\pm$ 0.37 (model) fb. The observed significance of the signal is 6.2 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis.

Observation of Structures in the Processes e + e − → ω χ c 1 and ω χ c 2

We present measurements of the Born cross sections for the processes e + e − → ω χ c 1 and ω χ c 2 at center-of-mass energies s from 4.308 to 4.951 GeV. The measurements are performed with data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 11.0 fb − 1 collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider storage ring. Assuming the e + e − → ω χ c 2 signals come from a single resonance, the mass and width are determined to be M = ( 4413.6 ± 9.0 ± 0.8 ) MeV / c 2 and Γ = ( 110.5 ± 15.0 ± 2.9 ) MeV , respectively, which is consistent with the parameters of the well-established resonance ψ ( 4415 ) . In addition, we also use one single resonance to describe the e + e − → ω χ c 1 line shape and determine the mass and width to be M = ( 4544.2 ± 18.7 ± 1.7 ) MeV / c 2 and Γ = ( 116.1 ± 33.5 ± 1.7 ) MeV , respectively. The structure of this line shape, observed for the first time, requires further understanding. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Surface preparation method for investigating the three-dimensional electronic structure of perovskite nickelates

The investigation of the electronic structures on perovskite oxides using surface-sensitive spectroscopy techniques is often hindered by their “uncleavable” nature, typically requiring expensive and complex in situ experimental setups that integrate the capabilities of sample synthesis and spectroscopy measurement under ultrahigh vacuum condition. Here, we address this challenge by developing an ozone-annealing process that yields atomically flat surfaces on perovskite oxide thin films, making them suitable for high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Using this method, we present a three-dimensional electronic structure study of Nd 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢NiO 3 (𝑥=0 and 0.175) thin films with unprecedented accuracy. The experimentally determined low-energy fermiology exhibits quantitative agreements with two-band tight-binding simulations, which is further validated by first-principles calculations considering the material's actual crystal structure. This work provides an accessible approach for ex situ ARPES measurements on perovskite oxides and other strongly correlated oxides, including the recently discovered high-𝑇 c nickelates.

Mapping the soil microbiome functions shaping wetland methane emissions

Accounting for only 8% of Earth’s land cover, freshwater wetlands remain the foremost contributors to global methane emissions. Yet the microorganisms and processes underlying methane emissions from wetland soils remain poorly understood. Over a five-year period, we surveyed the microbial membership and in situ methane measurements from over 700 samples in one of the most prolific methane-emitting wetlands in the United States. We constructed a catalog of 2,502 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), with more than half of the 70 bacterial and archaeal phyla sampled containing novel lineages. Integration of these data with 133 soil metatranscriptomes provided a genome-resolved view of the biogeochemical specialization and versatility expressed over wetland soil spatial and temporal gradients. Centimeter-scale depth differences best explained patterns of microbial community structure and transcribed functionalities, even more than land cover or temporal information. Moreover, while extended flooding restructured soil redox, this perturbation failed to reconfigure the transcriptional profiles of methane-cycling microorganisms, contrasting with theoretically expected responses to hydrological perturbations. Co-expression analyses, coupled with depth-resolved methane measurements, revealed the metabolisms and trophic structures most predictive of methane hotspots. Mapping the spatiotemporal transcriptional patterns on this compendium of biogeochemically classified soil-derived genomes begins to untangle the microbial carbon, energy, and nutrient processing contributing to wetland methane production.

Measurement of the production cross section of a W boson in association with two b jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8{\,\mathrm{{TeV}}} $

The production cross section of a W boson in association with two b jets is measured using a sample of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8{\,\mathrm{{TeV}}} $ collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.8 $\,\text {fb}^\text {-1}$ . The W bosons are reconstructed via their leptonic decays, $\mathrm {W}\rightarrow \ell \nu $ , where $\ell =\mu $ or $\mathrm {e}$ . The fiducial region studied contains exactly one lepton with transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm {T}} ^{\ell }>30\,\mathrm{{GeV}} $ and pseudorapidity $|\eta ^{\ell } |<2.1$ , with exactly two b jets with $p_{\mathrm {T}} >25\,\mathrm{{GeV}} $ and $|\eta |<2.4$ and no other jets with $p_{\mathrm {T}} >25\,\mathrm{{GeV}} $ and $|\eta |<4.7$ . Performance of algorithms that reconstruct missing transverse momentum in $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV proton–proton collisions in the ATLAS detector

The reconstruction and calibration algorithms used to calculate missing transverse momentum (E miss T ) with the ATLAS detector exploit energy deposits in the calorimeter and tracks reconstructed in the inner detector as well as the muon spectrometer. Various strategies are used to suppress effects arising from additional proton–proton interactions, called pileup, concurrent with the hard-scatter processes. Tracking information is used to distinguish contributions from the pileup interactions using their vertex separation along the beam axis. The performance of the E miss T reconstruction algorithms, especially with respect to the amount of pileup, is evaluated using data collected in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV during 2012, and results are shown for a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3fb –1 . The simulation and modelling of E miss T in events containing a Z boson decaying to two charged leptons (electrons or muons) or a W boson decaying to a charged lepton and a neutrino are compared to data. The acceptance for different event topologies, with and without high transverse momentum neutrinos, is shown for a range of threshold criteria for E miss T , and estimates of the systematic uncertainties in the E miss T measurements are presented.

Search for new phenomena with multiple charged leptons in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}= 13$ $\,\text {TeV}$

Results are reported from a search for physics beyond the standard model in final states with at least three charged leptons, in any combination of electrons or muons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 $\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =13$ $\,\text {TeV}$ , recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2015. Two jets are required in each event, providing good sensitivity to strong production of gluinos and squarks. The search regions, sensitive to a range of different new physics scenarios, are defined using the number of jets tagged as originating from bottom quarks, the sum of the magnitudes of the transverse momenta of the jets, the imbalance in the overall transverse momentum in the event, and the invariant mass of opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs. The event yields observed in data are consistent with the expected background contributions from standard model processes. These results are used to derive limits in terms of R-parity conserving simplified models of supersymmetry that describe strong production of gluinos and squarks. Model-independent limits are presented to facilitate the reinterpretation of the results in a broad range of scenarios for physics beyond the standard model.

Measurements of the $\mathrm {p}\mathrm {p}\rightarrow \mathrm{Z}\mathrm{Z}$ production cross section and the $\mathrm{Z}\rightarrow 4\ell $ branching fraction, and constraints on anomalous triple gauge couplings at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $

Four-lepton production in proton-proton collisions, $\mathrm {p}\mathrm {p}\rightarrow (\mathrm{Z}/ \gamma ^*)(\mathrm{Z}/\gamma ^*) \rightarrow 4\ell $ , where $\ell = \mathrm {e}$ or $\mu $ , is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13 $\,\text {TeV}$ with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 $\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ . The ZZ production cross section, $\sigma (\mathrm {p}\mathrm {p}\rightarrow \mathrm{Z}\mathrm{Z}) = 17.2 \pm 0.5\,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.7\,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.4\,\text {(theo)} \pm 0.4\,\text {(lumi)} \text { pb} $ , measured using events with two opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs produced in the mass region $60< m_{\ell ^+\ell ^-} < 120\,\text {GeV} $ , is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are measured and are well described by the theoretical predictions. The Z boson branching fraction to four leptons is measured to be $\mathcal {B}(\mathrm{Z}\rightarrow 4\ell ) = 4.8 \pm 0.2\,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.2\,\text {(syst)} \pm 0.1\,\text {(theo)} \pm 0.1\,\text {(lumi)} \times 10^{-6}$ for events with a four-lepton invariant mass in the range $80< m_{4\ell } < 100\,\text {GeV} $ and a dilepton mass $m_{\ell \ell } > 4\,\text {GeV} $ for all opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs. The results agree with standard model predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZ $\gamma $ couplings at 95% confidence level: $-0.0012
