Get the Power You Need, When and Where You Need It Aboard the International Space Station (ISS) Using the ISS Plug-In Plan (IPiP) Requirement Request Process

Trying to get your experiment aboard ISS? You likely will need power. Many enditem providers do. ISS Plug-In Plan (IPiP) supports power and data for science, Payloads (or Utilization), vehicle systems, and daily operations through the Electrical Power System (EPS) Secondary Power/Data Subsystem. Yet limited resources and increasing requirements continue to influence decisions on deployment of ISS end items. Given the fluid launch schedule and the rapidly- increasing number of end item providers requiring power support, the focus of the Plug-In Plan has evolved from a simple FIFO recommendation to provide power to end item users, to anticipating future requirements by judicious development and delivery of support equipment (cables, power supplies, power strips, and alternating current (AC) power inverters), employing innovative deployment strategies, and collaborating on end item development. This paper describes the evolution of the ISS Program Office, Engineering Directorate, Flight Operations Directorate (FOD), International Partners and the end item provider relationship and how collaboration successfully leverages unique requirements with limited on- board equipment and resources, tools and processes which result in more agile integration, and describes the process designed for the new ISS end item provider to assure that their power requirements will be met.

Topological Machine Learning Methods for Power System Responses to Contingencies: Preprint

While deep learning tools, coupled with the emerging machinery of topological data analysis, are proven to deliver various performance gains in a broad range of applications, from image classification to biosurveillance to blockchain fraud detection, their utility in areas of high societal importance such as power system modeling and, particularly, resilience quantification in the energy sector yet remain untapped. To provide fast acting synthetic regulation and contingency reserve services to the grid while having minimal disruptions on customer quality of service, we propose a new topologybased system that depends on neural network architecture for impact metrics classification and prediction in power systems. This novel topology-based system allows one to evaluate the impact of three power system contingency types, namely, in conjunction with transmission lines, transformers, and transmission lines combined with transformers. We show that the proposed new neural network architecture equipped with local topological measures facilitates both more accurate classification of unserved load as well as the amount of unserved load. In addition, we are able to learn complex relationships between electrical properties and local topological measurements on the simulated response to contingencies for NREL-SIIP power system.

Recovery of coincident frequency domain multiplexed detector pulses using sequential deconvolution

Multiplexing of radiation detector signals into a single channel significantly reduces the need for a large number of digitizer channels, which reduces the cost and the power consumption of a data acquisition system. We previously demonstrated frequency domain multiplexing by convolution using a prototype system that multiplexed two EJ-309 organic scintillators signals into a single channel. Each detector pulse was converted to a damped sinusoid which was then combined into a single channel. The combined signal was digitized and the original detector signal was recovered from the damped sinusoid by deconvolution. In this paper, we demonstrate the recovery of multiple detector signals that arrive during the same digitized record via a new sequential deconvolution method. Here, when two detectors produce signals in the same digitized record and their pulses do not overlap in time, we found that the charge, arrival time, and particle type can be estimated fairly precisely for the first pulse, but the second pulse exhibits substantial degradation in the precision of the estimated charge and arrival time. When the pulses overlap in time, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the part of the first pulse that does not overlap with the second can be recovered accurately, so the arrival time and amplitude of the first pulse can be estimated fairly precisely, but not the charge or particle type. None of these quantities can be estimated precisely for the second pulse when the two pulses overlap.

Physics-Informed Evolutionary Strategy Based Control for Mitigating Delayed Voltage Recovery

Here, in this work we propose a novel data-driven, real-time power system voltage stability control method based on the physics-informed guided meta evolutionary strategy (ES). The main objective is to quickly provide an adaptive control strategy to secure system voltage stability. The problem is challenging due to the high-dimensional feature of the power system model and the fast-changing and uncertain nature of power system operation scenarios. To this end, a model-free and derivative-free guided ES method is applied. The method is further combined with a meta-learning strategy to make the learnt control policy automatically adapted to unseen operation conditions and fault scenarios, which is highly desired for real-time emergency control. Last but not least, physical knowledge is embedded in the above method through a trainable action mask technique to rule out unnecessary load shedding actions for better learning and control performance. Case studies on the IEEE 300-bus system and comparisons with other state-of-the-art benchmark methods verify the superiority of the proposed physics-informed guided meta ES method in realizing fast and adaptive power system voltage stability control.

HIDES (Hybrid Intrusion Detection for Energy Systems) [SWR-19-65]

Hybrid Intrusion Detection for Energy Systems (HIDES) is a conglomerate detector that incorporates three major components: (1) Signature-based detection that involves information technology (IT) related anomaly detection rules, (2) Behavior-based detection that utilizes specially crafted rulesets for detecting abnormal behavior regarding the power system's supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) communication streams, and (3) Learning-based detection that combines SCADA communication with phasor measurements to identify otherwise non-detectible attack vectors. The software itself interconnects intrusion detection engine (IDE) enabling communications between the generated OT and IT alerts with phasor measurements for the learning-based detection system. The resulting detection system can detect a wide array of IT, OT, and physical attacks in a real-time setting.

Fluctuating pressures on aircraft wing and flap surfaces associated with powered-lift systems

The present work presents results from two research studies that provide information on the fluctuating pressures generated by the use of powered-lift systems in STOL aircraft. Data are given for several chordwise and spanwise locations on large-scale models of an externally blown flap (EBF) configuration and an upper surface blown flap (USB) configuration in which actual jet engines were used. Pressure levels were high enough to indicate that special design effort will be required to avoid acoustic fatigue failures of wing and flap sturctures. The observation that pressure levels did not decrease very much with increased distance from the engine exhaust center line suggests that a STOL aircraft fuselage, which is in relatively close proximity to the engines for aerodynamic reasons, will be subjected to unusually high external overall fluctuating pressure levels (OAFPLs) that may cause difficulty in control of the cabin noise level.

Algorithm development for a spacecraft autonomous power system

Two algorithms were developed to demonstrate the implementation of autonomous functions in an existing spacecraft power system. The functions selected for autonomous operation include a typical performance monitoring function, battery state of charge, and a fault detection and response function represented by a battery state of charge below a preselected limit. The constraints imposed by the existing power system configuration are the available data in the telemetry stream and the existing commands and command structure. The areas requiring future development are the degree of battery characterization, the effects of hardware/software faults, and the verification of faults.

A space station Structures and Assembly Verification Experiment, SAVE

The Space Station structure has been baselined to be a 5 M (16.4 ft) erectable truss. This structure will provide the overall framework to attach laboratory modules and other systems, subsystems and utilities. The assembly of this structure represents a formidable EVA challenge. To validate this capability the Space Station Structures/Dynamics Technical Integration Panel (TIP) met to develop the necessary data for an integrated STS structures flight experiment. As a result of this meeting, the Langley Research Center initiated a joint Langley/Boeing Aerospace Company study which supported the structures/dynamics TIP in developing the preliminary definition and design of a 5 M erectable space station truss and the resources required for a proposed flight experiment. The purpose of the study was to: (1) devise methods of truss assembly by astronauts; (2) define a specific test matrix for dynamic characterization; (3) identify instrumentation and data system requirements; (4) determine the power, propulsion and control requirements for the truss on-orbit for 3 years; (5) study the packaging of the experiment in the orbiter cargo bay; (6) prepare a preliminary cost estimate and schedule for the experiment; and (7) provide a list of potential follow-on experiments using the structure as a free flyer. The results of this three month study are presented.

Study of toluene rotary fluid management device and shear flow condenser performance for a space-based organic Rankine power system

Management of two-phase fluid and control of the heat transfer process in microgravity is a technical challenge that must be addressed for an orbital Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) application. A test program was performed in 1-g that satisfactorily demonstrated the two-phase management capability of the rotating fluid management device (RFMD) and shear-flow condenser. Operational tests of the RFMD and shear flow condenser in adverse gravity orientations, confirmed that the centrifugal forces in the RFMD and the shear forces in the condenser were capable of overcoming gravity forces. In a microgravity environment, these same forces would not have to compete against gravity and would therefore be dominant. The specific test program covered the required operating range of the Space Station Solar Dynamic Rankine Cycle power system. Review of the test data verified that: fluid was pumped from the RFMD in all attitudes; subcooled states in the condenser were achieved; condensate was pushed uphill against gravity; and noncondensible gases were swept through the condenser.
