Data source authentication of synchrophasor measurement devices based on 1D-CNN and GRU

Synchrophasor measurement devices (SMDs) have been widely deployed to support real-time monitoring and control of power systems. In the meantime, data spoofing has emerged in recent years. Therefore, it is of great importance to study data authentication algorithms for detecting and defending the data spoofing effectively. Here, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) is utilized to extract temporal signatures hidden in frequency, voltage angle and amplitude data; then the gated recurrent unit (GRU) employs these temporal signatures for data source authentication. In case studies, the performances of different algorithms are tested in large-scale power systems with numerous SMDs for the first time, and comparisons among different algorithms show that the proposed algorithm can achieve a higher accuracy of data source authentication with a shorter time window.

Redesign of the Coils for the 60T Controlled-Waveform Magnet at NHMFL

Driven by the1.4 GW generator, the 60T Controlled Waveform (60 TCW) magnet was the most powerful controlled waveform system in the world and had always been one of most important magnets to the National High Magnetic Field (NHMFL) and high-field research community because of its following unique features: (1) quasi-static field up to 60 T with 100 ms flat-top and total pulse-length of about 2000 ms, (2) variable magnetic field waveforms such as staircase and triangle with flat-top (3) relative large bore (32 mm) and (4) very fast cooling time (20 minutes) between pulses [Boebinger, 2001], [Crooker et al. 2001]. The magnet is composed of nine concentric coils, with each coil consisting of several conductor winding layers reinforced by a high-strength metallic shell. The magnet underwent a catastrophic failure in 2000 and all the coils had to be rebuilt. In late 2014 the second magnet version failed near the mid-plane of coil 7. The simulations afterward that incident indicated that the overall strength of the coil would be increased by replacing a section of the reinforcing shell with Zylon fiber-epoxy composite. This reduces the stress and thus significantly lowers the level of plastic deformation in the windings. The role of the metal and Zylon fiber reinforcing layers in bearing the axial and radial Lorentz forces has been studied to optimize the magnet design. Here, the results of the optimization will be discussed as well as challenges that have been presented in rebuilding the individual coils of the magnet.

ReLIC: Full-Scale Realization of Reinforcement Learning for Infrastructure Control

Prior efforts have shown that deep reinforcement learning (DRL) may provide a new method for controlling networked power systems. Though successful, prior approaches have not yet demonstrated their behavior on systems of realistic scale. This effort examined multiple theoretical and technical approaches to allow a DRL model to operate over a system of 2,000 buses or more. We find that allowing the DRL models to run training episodes in parallel provides near limitless efficiency gains, allowing us to train successful agents to behave on our Kuramoto transmission model of up to 4,000 buses. We further show that we can expand our PowerWorld DRL implementation to systems of up to 25 buses but struggle to go beyond this limit due to PowerWorld’s inability to run multiple instances at once. Finally, we examine a multi-agent approach and find that it performs as well if not better than our existing centralized approach.

Dynamic Model Development of a Wind Power Plant Using Neural Net Method to Forecast Wind Power Output (CRADA Final Report)

This project is intended to model wind power plant based on monitored data at the wind power plant. This project will promote the university research in Renewable Energy area and trains the future highly qualified engineers. The dynamic model will be based on neural net model with the input from the two met towers (12 inputs), and the number of turbines in operation (one input). The overall input will be 13 inputs to drive the simulations. The output power at the point of interconnection will be used to tune the neural net weight coefficients. Two neural net concepts will be investigated (the back propagation neural net and the dynamic recurrent neural net with feedback).

An investigation of the landing characteristics of the NASA-MSC August 1969 baseline orbiter configuration in ground effect

A 0.05 scale model of the NASA-MSC August 1969 baseline shuttle craft was tested in Texas A&M University's 7- x 10-foot low speed wind tunnel facility. The purpose of the test was to determine the landing aerodynamic characteristics of the shuttle craft vehicle in ground effect and to evaluate control surface hinge moments experienced in the cruise and landing operational phases of flight. Analysis of the final data will allow evaluation of vehicle flight stability in ground effect and estimation of vehicle control surface power system requirements.

The Small Astronomy Satellite program - An overview.

The Small Astronomy Satellite (SAS) program sponsored by NASA provides for a series of satellites that can be used for various astronomy experiments. The SAS-A mission is to map the X-ray sources in the entire sky. In addition, discrete X-ray sources are being observed for intensity fluctuations in the range from 1 to 20 keV. The structure design, power system, attitude control and detection system, command system, telemetering system and the testing criteria for the spacecraft are discussed. The SAS-A was launched December 12, 1970, and has been very successful in its scientific mission.

Low cost solar array project 1: Silicon material

The low cost production of silicon by deposition of silicon from a hydrogen/chlorosilane mixture is described. Reactor design, reaction vessel support systems (physical support, power control and heaters, and temperature monitoring systems) and operation of the system are reviewed. Testing of four silicon deposition reactors is described, and test data and consequently derived data are given. An 18% conversion of trichlorosilane to silicon was achieved, but average conversion rates were lower than predicted due to incomplete removal of byproduct gases for recycling and silicon oxide/silicon polymer plugging of the gas outlet. Increasing the number of baffles inside the reaction vessel improved the conversion rate. Plans for further design and process improvements to correct the problems encountered are outlined.

The Mod-2 wind turbine development project

A major phase of the Federal Wind Energy Program, the Mod-2 wind turbine, a second-generation machine developed by the Boeing Engineering and Construction Co. for the U.S. Department of Energy and the Lewis Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is described. The Mod-2 is a large (2.5-MW power rating) horizontal-axis wind turbine designed for the generation of electrical power on utility networks. Three machines were built and are located in a cluster at Goodnoe Hills, Washington. All technical aspects of the project are described: design approach, significant innovation features, the mechanical system, the electrical power system, the control system, and the safety system.

Wind energy system time-domain (WEST) analyzers

A portable analyzer which simulates in real time the complex nonlinear dynamics of horizontal axis wind energy systems was constructed. Math models for an aeroelastic rotor featuring nonlinear aerodynamic and inertial terms were implemented with high speed digital controllers and analog calculation. This model was combined with other math models of elastic supports, control systems, a power train and gimballed rotor kinematics. A stroboscopic display system graphically depicting distributed blade loads, motion, and other aerodynamic functions on a cathode ray tube is included. Limited correlation efforts showed good comparison between the results of this analyzer and other sophisticated digital simulations. The digital simulation results were successfully correlated with test data.

The electric Orbiter

An electromechanical actuator (EMA) system is described and compared to the baseline hydraulic system for the Shuttle. Employment of the EMA depends on minimal changes in the avionics and software, no change in the vehicle configuration, and satisfaction of performance requirements. There are 13 actuators on the Shuttle, all subject to the standard four (redundant) command channels. The actuator control units, motor control units, mechanical actuators, and motors are discussed, and system and sizing requirements are outlined. The effects on the displays and controls, the environmental control system, electrical power and distribution, and software are mentioned, and projected to be minimal. It is noted that although the EMA total systems' costs have not been calculated, substantial weight, turnaround time, and power savings are available by use of EMA.
