Population inversion calculations using near resonant charge exchange as a pumping mechanism.

A theoretical study is conducted to investigate the possibility of obtaining inversions in a plasma of metals such as Mg, Ca, Sr, or Ba by charge exchange with inert gas ions. The gases considered include He, Ne, Xe, Ar, or N. The analysis uses rate equations to calculate the density of the various ion levels and an energy equation to calculate the electron temperature. Both charge exchange and electron collisional excitation of the various ion levels are considered.

A model of the trapped electron population for solar minimum

A model is presented of the trapped electron environment of solar minimum conditions. Solar maximum models have been presented for the inner radiation zone (AE-5 1967), and for the outer radiation zone (AE-4 1967). The present solar minimum model consists of an inner zone model (AE-5 1975 Projected) with an epoch of 1975, and an outer zone model with an epoch of 1964. With only minor modifications this latter model is identical to the AE-4 1964 model presented previous. The model, however, has not previously been issued in computer form. AE-4 1964 is based upon satellite data, while the inner zone solar minimum model AE-5 1975 Projected consists entirely of extrapolations from AE-5 1967. While the two components of the solar minimum model have epochs 11 years part, it is assumed that any differences between the successive solar minima are smaller than the model error, and the complete model is associated with an epoch of 1975.

Dynamics of plankton populations in upwelling areas

Recent investigations of the upwelling area along the NW Coast of Africa which include studies with satellites are discussed. The detection of patchiness in temperature and plankton distribution in the upwelling area is of special interest because they can be investigated from space synoptically with repeated coverage. The recent satellite missions provide recordings in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum (EMR) as well as in the visible part. The information from those two parts of the EMR is useful for establishing the sea surface temperature and plankton distribution in upwelling areas. The temperature distribution as observed with infrared sensors and the patchiness in plankton patterns are discussed as observed with the most recent satellites, namely the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) and NOAA-2.

Energetic particle population in the Jovian magnetosphere - A preliminary note

Preliminary account of energetic particle measurements conducted by the Pioneer 10 spacecraft during approach to Jupiter in November and December 1973. Graphs illustrate electron and proton flux levels as a function of distance from the planet for different particle energy intervals. Times of predicted equatorial crossing are marked along with positions corresponding to the bowshock, magnetopause, and other features. The general patterns of particle distribution in the Jovian vicinity are discussed.

Crater populations on lunar rocks

Approximately 10,000 microcraters were investigated using binocular microscope techniques on fifteen Apollo 16 rocks: crystalline rocks 60315, 60335, 61156, 62235, 62295, and 68415; breccias 60016, 61015, 61175, 66075, and 69935; and glass surfaces 60015, 60095, 60135, and 64455. Diameter measurements of the central glass-lined pits and surrounding spall zones were made. Ratios of spall to pit diameters may range from 3.0 to 4.5 for different rock surfaces. Crater size distributions obtained for production surfaces confirm and extend to larger crater sizes data published previously. The crater size distribution on lunar rocks in the pit diameter range, 10 to 1000 microns, is shown to depend on the average angle of impact which is a function of the exposure geometry. In contrast to results of earlier studies, a wide range of crater densities was observed on relatively heavily cratered surfaces.

The nature of Cygnus X-3 - A prototype for old population binary X-ray sources

Description of a model for Cyg X-3 based on a short-lived phase in the evolution of a U Geminorum-type binary where rapid mass transfer and mass loss occurs. X rays are generated by accretion on the white dwarf component, while both stars are enveloped in a thick stellar wind emanating from the red dwarf. Electron scattering in the cloud is responsible for the modulation of the X rays with the orbital period of 4.8 hours. Ultraviolet radiation and low-energy X rays absorbed in the cloud are reradiated in the optical and infrared, which, it is predicted, will display a 4.8-hr modulation in phase with the X-ray light curve. The X-ray absorption cutoff should also vary with phase, appearing at minimum energy when the source is at maximum light. The model also provides a framework in which certain aspects of the associated nonthermal radio source may be understood. Finally, it is suggested that the model may be applicable to Sco X-1 as well.

Comparisons of population subgroups performance on a keyboard psychomotor task

Response time and pass/fail data were obtained from 163 subjects performing a psychomotor task. The basic task comprised a random five digit number briefly displayed to the subject at the start of each trail, and the keyboard on which the subject was to enter the number as fast as he could accurately do so after the display was extinguished. Some tests were run with the addition of a secondary task which required the subject to respond to a displayed light appearing at a random time. Matched pairs of subjects were selected from the group to analyze the effects of age, sex, intelligence, prior keyboard skill, and drinking habits. There was little or no effect due to age or drinking habits. Differences in response time were: average IQ subjects faster than low IQ subjects by 0.5 to 0.6 sec; subjects with prior keyboard skill faster by 0.4 to 0.5 sec; and female subjects faster by 0.2 to 0.3 sec. These effects were generally insensitive to the presence of the secondary task.

Dynamics of plankton populations in upwelling areas

The author has identified the following significant results. Spectral properties of the upwelled waters off the NW coast of Africa were studied with observations derived from aircraft and Skylab. Results indicate that the two-channel, ratio approach is ineffective in determining surface chlorophyll concentrations. Ocean color boundaries and temperature gradients were found to be directly correlated with each other and also with fishing effort in the upwelling region. Photographic and scanner data derived from Skylab were effective in locating ocean boundaries and mapping temperature distributions.
