Neutronics Enhanced Meshing Operations (NEMO) Users Manual V.1.0

The is a Python framework developed at Idaho National Laboratory that uses the Cubit Python to build Cubit models and export them in EXODUS II format. These EXODUS mesh files can be used by any -based application, but NEMO is specialized for coupled neutronics calculations. Therefore, the primary purpose of NEMO is to prepare mesh files for reactor geometries and generate a homogenization overlay file for the Serpent Monte Carlo code. This homogenization overlay file ensures the consistency of the mesh with the generation of homogenized cross sections and reference fluxes for the Superhomogenization method. NEMO also supports the preparation of mesh files for thermal and thermo-mechanical models, particularly the discontinuous finite element gap heat transfer model in Griffin. This manual introduces the user to the basic capabilities in NEMO for prismatic geometries.

Multiscale and Machine Learning Modeling for Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques provide the opportunity to simultaneously design new materials and components with complex structures in less time, enabling faster material developments. Even though compositionally similar, the texture of the materials produced by such techniques is significantly different from conventionally manufactured materials. Additively manufactured materials produces highly heterogeneous microstructure within a single build. Such variations in the microstructure make qualifying AM products challenging for extreme environment applications. Understanding the AM process and its influence on the materials’ microstructures/properties is paramount for evaluating the workability and performance of the manufactured materials. The performance of AM materials for advanced nuclear reactor applications is of interest to the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMMT) program under the Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy. Hence, considering the microstructural variabilities in the AM products and their impact on the performance of the material, it is important to correlate the process conditions to the final product and establish a process-structure-property- performance (PSPP) correlation for AM materials.

Sugar accumulation enhancement in sorghum stem is associated with reduced reproductive sink strength and increased phloem unloading activity

Sweet sorghum has emerged as a promising source of bioenergy mainly due to its high biomass and high soluble sugar yield in stems. Studies have shown that loss-of-function Dry locus alleles have been selected during sweet sorghum domestication, and decapitation can further boost sugar accumulation in sweet sorghum, indicating that the potential for improving sugar yields is yet to be fully realized. To maximize sugar accumulation, it is essential to gain a better understanding of the mechanism underlying the massive accumulation of soluble sugars in sweet sorghum stems in addition to the Dry locus. We performed a transcriptomic analysis upon decapitation of near-isogenic lines for mutant (d, juicy stems, and green leaf midrib) and functional (D, dry stems and white leaf midrib) alleles at the Dry locus. Our analysis revealed that decapitation suppressed photosynthesis in leaves, but accelerated starch metabolic processes in stems. SbbHLH093 negatively correlates with sugar levels supported by genotypes (DD vs. dd), treatments (control vs. decapitation), and developmental stages post anthesis (3d vs.10d). D locus gene SbNAC074A and other programmed cell death-related genes were downregulated by decapitation, while sugar transporter-encoding gene SbSWEET1A was induced. Both SbSWEET1A and Invertase 5 were detected in phloem companion cells by RNA in situ assay. Loss of the SbbHLH093 homolog, AtbHLH093, in Arabidopsis led to a sugar accumulation increase. This study provides new insights into sugar accumulation enhancement in bioenergy crops, which can be potentially achieved by reducing reproductive sink strength and enhancing phloem unloading.

Nickel-cadmium cells for the spacecraft battery

The storage battery for the Telstar satellite must undergo frequent charge-discharge cycles; in addition, it is subject to overcharge during a substantial portion of its life. Nickel-cadmium cells were chosen as best capable of satisfactory long-time operation under these conditions. A design and selection program was undertaken to ensure that Ni-Cd cores would meet objectives imposed by battery service conditions, and the cell enclosure was designed to minimize electrolyte leakage. Selection, qualification, and life tests indicated that a storage battery using the cell design would perform satisfactorily. To date, the only failures occurring during continuing life tests have been among cells subjected to 100 per cent discharge daily; this operation is far in excess of the expected duty cycle of satellite cells.

Digital control of high performance aircraft using adaptive estimation techniques

In this paper, an adaptive signal processing algorithm is joined with gain-scheduling for controlling the dynamics of high performance aircraft. A technique is presented for a reduced-order model (the longitudinal dynamics) of a high performance STOL aircraft. The actual controller views the nonlinear behavior of the aircraft as equivalent to a randomly switching sequence of linear models taken from a preliminary piecewise-linear fit of the system nonlinearities. The adaptive nature of the estimator is necessary to select the proper sequence of linear models along the flight trajectory. Nonlinear behavior is approximated by effective switching of the linear models at random times, with durations reflecting aircraft motion in response to pilot commands.

Control of nonlinear stochastic systems using adaptive estimation

A general procedure for the design of a digital controller for nonlinear stochastic systems is presented; the emphasis is on development of partitioned-adaptive control techniques which provide rapid tracking of the system state vector to follow rapid trajectory variations. Tests involving the control of a low-order nonlinear oscillator suggest that the procedure yields an effective method for achieving closed-loop performance, despite the difficulty of the control problem

Digital set point control of nonlinear stochastic systems

A technique for digital control of nonlinear stochastic plants is presented. The development achieves a practical digital algorithm with which the closed-loop system behaves in a classical Type I manner even with gross nonlinearities in the plant structure and low signal-to-noise power ratios. The design procedure is explained in detail and illustrated by an example whose simulated responses testify to the practicality of the approach.

Set-point control of nonlinear systems

A method of nonlinear stochastic control is applied to the problem of providing set-point control. The procedure is illustrated for a nonlinear second-order plant. The controller design uses a variation of the 'multiple-model adaptive control' approach. Specific problems related to the design are investigated, including learning time and set-point accuracy dependence on the number of approximating models, chord versus tangent approximations, and the a priori Markov switching parameter values. Simulations are provided for different situations under various levels of measurement noise.

Applications of adaptive state estimation theory

Two main areas of application of adaptive state estimation theory are presented. Following a review of the basic estimation approach, its application to both the control of nonlinear plants and to the problem of tracking maneuvering targets is presented. Results are brought together from these two areas of investigation to provide insight into the wide range of possible applications of the general estimation method.

Study of an automatic trajectory following control system

It is shown that the estimator part of the Modified Partitioned Adaptive Controller, (MPAC) developed for nonlinear aircraft dynamics of a small jet transport can adapt to sensor failures. In addition, an investigation is made into the potential usefulness of the configuration detection technique used in the MPAC and the failure detection filter is developed that determines how a noise plant output is associated with a line or plane characteristic of a failure. It is shown by computer simulation that the estimator part and the configuration detection part of the MPAC can readily adapt to actuator and sensor failures and that the failure detection filter technique cannot detect actuator or sensor failures accurately for this type of system because of the plant modeling errors. In addition, it is shown that the decision technique, developed for the failure detection filter, can accurately determine that the plant output is related to the characteristic line or plane in the presence of sensor noise.

A new solution to parameter adaptive estimation of random processes

This paper is concerned with the development of an adaptive state estimator that is capable of tracking switched linear plants that undergo rapid configuration changes. The particular adaptive estimator developed here is called the Sliding Window Detector/Estimator (SWDE) algorithm. Unlike previous algorithms, the SWDE algorithm is designed specifically for the switched-linear plant problem. It uses a joint detection/estimation approach to give a very close approximation to the unrealizable optimum switched-linear estimator. An extremely reliable and accurate estimator can be constructed by combining a modified Parameter Adaptive Estimation (PAE) algorithm with SWDE. The algorithm has been fully verified by extensive computer simulation, and the implementation advantages afforded by this method make it suitable for use in a wide variety of applications.

Interfacial shear behavior of sapphire-reinforced NiAl composites

The interfacial shear behavior in near-equiatomic NiAl reinforced by sapphire filaments has been examined at room temperature using a fiber pushout test technique. The load-displacement data indicate a large variability in the initial interface failure stress, although reverse push behavior indicates a comparatively constant interfacial sliding friction stress. The observed behavior suggests that the presence of asperities on the fiber surfaces and nonuniformities in fiber diameter require constrained plastic flow within the NiAl matrix in order for interfacial shear to occur. The location, shape, severity, and distribution of fiber asperities as well as the uniformity of fiber diameter are critical to the interfacial shear process.

Modeling of the High Temperature Test Facility Using RELAP-7

The High Temperature Test Facility (HTTF) at Oregon State University (OSU) is an electrically heated, helium cooled, experimental facility. The HTTF was modeled using RELAP-7 in both 1-D and 3-D for validation. Due to core symmetry, 1/6th of the HTTF core was modeled in 3-D using the coupled heat conduction and forced convection capabilities of RELAP-7. This served as a validation case for RELAP-7 and its capabilities to model advanced nuclear technologies such as high temperature gas-cooled reactors.

M3 milestone: Advanced contact 2021

This report describes advanced contact approaches and implementations in FY21 for use in emerging reactors with geometries that differ from LWR/EBR-II cylindrical fuel. Contact remains a challenging and crucially important component of our modeling toolkit. While significant improvements have been made through mortar and automatic differentiation, we explored advanced approaches (i.e., dual mortar) that yields better conditioned systems and will improve the robustness and performance of BISON contact problems. This effort is relevant to emerging reactor types, such as micro reactors and the corresponding complex and numerous contact surfaces. In this report, improvements of the mortar-based contact formulation are described. Benchmark problems and BISON assessment cases are included to demonstrate the improvements and advantages that are brought by the recent capability. Remaining issues are discussed and corresponding development plans are outlined.

Implementation of Isotopic Removal Capability in Griffin for Multi-Region MSR Depletion Analysis

This work reports the first step in such an analysis, the verification of isotope removal capability for multi-region MSR depletion in Griffin. Verification studies are performed against SERPENT for chemical species removal from the core to an off-gas system for MSR analysis. A brief review of the Bateman equations including the isotopic removal term is provided along with a description of the example problem used in the verification studies performed in Griffin versus SERPENT. Next, the results of the verification study are presented for isotopic depletion, isotopic depletion with removal, and the specific analysis case of varying the solubility of Iodine in a salt system and how this can affect material buildup in the off-gas system. Lastly, the results are analyzed and future work detailing the fully coupled MSR depletion analysis that incorporates the true multiphysics of the system is discussed.
