High performance N2O4/amine elements blowapart

Hypergolic earth-storable N2O4/Amine propellants are used for a wide range of liquid propulsion system applications. These propellants are highly reactive and can experience reactive stream separation (RSS, i.e., blowapart) which can inhibit intraelement mixing, hence reducing the overall spray mixture ratio and mass distribution, which can result in altered combustion efficiency, gas-side heat transfer coefficient, and stability. An experimental and analytical program was conducted to develop an understanding of the mechanisms controlling RSS. The program and product was development of design criteria for coping with RSS to allow the design of high performing, stable injectors. RSS mechanisms were identified using high speed color photography to observe reactive stream mixing of single element injectors tested with N2O4/MMH, N2O4/A-50, and N2O4/N2H4 propellants. The parametric characterization included modeling of the Space Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering System and Reaction Control System engine injectors.

Improving processing and toughness of a high performance composite matrix through an interpenetrating polymer network. VI

The use of a semiinterpenetrating polymer network (SIPN) of the high-performance polyimide NR-150B2 to reduce brittleness and improve processability in the highly crosslinked acetylene-terminated polyimides Thermid LR-600, AL-600, MC-600, and FA-700 is described. The theoretical basis of the SIPN process is reviewed; the preparation and characterization of the neat SIPN resins and unidirectional graphite-fiber composites are explained; and the results are presented in extensive tables, graphs, and micrographs and discussed in detail. Significant increases in fracture energy were observed with SIPN, from 93 J/sq m for unmodified LR-600 to 283-603 J/sq m for the SIPN materials; the room-temperature flexural strength of the unidirectional composites also increased, from 1344 MPa for an unmodified MC-600 composite to 2020-1751 MPa for the SIPN composites. The potential applicability of SIPN-based composites to aerospace structures and electronic components is indicated.

A High-Performance Design for Hierarchical Parallelism in the QMCPACK Monte Carlo code

We introduce a new high-performance design for parallelism within the Quantum Monte Carlo code QMCPACK. We demonstrate that the new design is better able to exploit the hierarchical parallelism of heterogeneous architectures compared to the previous GPU implementation. The new version is able to achieve higher GPU occupancy via the new concept of crowds of Monte Carlo walkers, and by enabling more host CPU threads to effectively offload to the GPU. The higher performance is expected to be achieved independent of the underlying hardware, significantly improving developer productivity and reducing code maintenance costs. Scientific productivity is also improved with full support for fallback to CPU execution when GPU implementations are not available or CPU execution is more optimal.

A 2 Tesla Full Scale High Performance Periodic Permanent Magnet Model for Attractive (228 KN) and repulsive Maglev

Two 214.5 cm. long high performance periodic (26 cm period) permanent magnet half-assemblies were designed and constructed for use as a wiggler using Nd-B-Fe and vanadium permendur as hard and soft magnetic materials by Field Effects, a division of Intermagnetics General Corporation. Placing these assemblies in a supporting structure with a 2.1 cm pole to pole separation resulted in a periodic field with a maximum value of 2.04 T. This is believed to be the highest field ever achieved by this type of device. The attractive force between the two 602 kg magnet assemblies is 228 kN, providing enough force for suspension of a 45,500 kg vehicle. If used in an attractive maglev system with an appropriate flat iron rail, one assembly will generate the same force with a gap of 1.05 cm leading to a lift to weight ratio of 38.6, not including the vehicle attachment structure. This permanent magnet compares well with superconducting systems which have lift to weight ratios in the range of 5 to 10. This paper describes the magnet assemblies and their measured magnetic performance. The measured magnetic field and resulting attractive magnetic force have a negative spring characteristic. Appropriate control coils are necessary to provide stable operation. The estimated performance of the assemblies in a stable repulsive mode, with eddy currents in a conducting guideway, is also discussed.

High-performance and cost-effective membrane electrode assemblies for advanced proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers: Long-term durability assessment

In this work, improved activity and durability performance of a two-cell (86 cm 2 ) proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) stack is reported for the first time. Both membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) contain one order of magnitude lower platinum group metal (PGM) loadings compared to the state-of-the-art PEMWEs and incorporate novel Pt recombination layers. The high-performance and cost-effective MEAs are fabricated by the unique reactive spray deposition technology (RSDT). This advanced methodology allows for one-step fabrication of MEAs and ensures precise control and distribution of the catalyst composition and loading. The RSDT-fabricated MEAs contain only 0.2 and 0.3 mg PGM cm –2 loading in the cathode and anode electrodes, respectively, and demonstrate excellent activity and durability for over 3000 h of operation at industrially-relevant operating conditions without showing significant loss in performance. This novel work shows that a significant cost reduction for PEMWEs is achieved while maintaining excellent durability, high catalysts activities, and low hydrogen cross-over.

Damage-mitigating control of a reusable rocket engine for high performance and extended life

The goal of damage mitigating control in reusable rocket engines is to achieve high performance with increased durability of mechanical structures such that functional lives of the critical components are increased. The major benefit is an increase in structural durability with no significant loss of performance. This report investigates the feasibility of damage mitigating control of reusable rocket engines. Phenomenological models of creep and thermo-mechanical fatigue damage have been formulated in the state-variable setting such that these models can be combined with the plant model of a reusable rocket engine, such as the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME), for synthesizing an optimal control policy. Specifically, a creep damage model of the main thrust chamber wall is analytically derived based on the theories of sandwich beam and viscoplasticity. This model characterizes progressive bulging-out and incremental thinning of the coolant channel ligament leading to its eventual failure by tensile rupture. The objective is to generate a closed form solution of the wall thin-out phenomenon in real time where the ligament geometry is continuously updated to account for the resulting deformation. The results are in agreement with those obtained from the finite element analyses and experimental observation for both Oxygen Free High Conductivity (OFHC) copper and a copper-zerconium-silver alloy called NARloy-Z. Due to its computational efficiency, this damage model is suitable for on-line applications of life prediction and damage mitigating control, and also permits parametric studies for off-line synthesis of damage mitigating control systems. The results are presented to demonstrate the potential of life extension of reusable rocket engines via damage mitigating control. The control system has also been simulated on a testbed to observe how the damage at different critical points can be traded off without any significant loss of engine performance. The research work reported here is built upon concepts derived from the disciplines of Controls, Thermo-fluids, Structures, and Materials. The concept of damage mitigation, as presented in this report, is not restricted to control of rocket engines. It can be applied to any system where structural durability is an important issue.

Ionic/electronic conductivity regulation of n-type polyoxadiazole lithium sulfonate conductive polymer binders for high-performance silicon microparticle anodes

Low-cost silicon microparticles (SiMP), as a substitute for nanostructured silicon, easily suffer from cracks and fractured during the electrochemical cycle. A novel n-type conductive polymer binder with excellent electronic and ionic conductivities as well as good adhesion, has been successfully designed and applied for high-performance SiMP anodes in lithium-ion batteries to address this problem. Its unique features are attributed to the strong electron-withdrawing oxadiazole ring structure with sulfonate polar groups. The combination of rigid and flexible components in the polymer ensures its good mechanical strength and ductility, which is beneficial to suppress the expansion and contraction of SiMP s during the charge/discharge process. By fine-tuning the monomer ratio, the conjugation and sulfonation degrees of the polymer can be precisely controlled to regulate its ionic and electronic conductivities, which has been systematically analyzed with the help of an electrochemical test method, filling in the gap on the conductivity measurement of the polymer in the doping state. The experimental results indicate that the cell with the developed n-type polymer binder and SiMP (~0.5 μm) anodes achieves much better cycling performance than traditional non-conductive binders. It has been considered that the initial capacity of the SiMP anode is controlled by the synergetic effect of ionic and electronic conductivity of the binder, and the capacity retention mainly depends on its electronic conductivity when the ionic conductivity is sufficient. Here, it is worth noting that the fundamental research of this work is also applicable to other battery systems using conductive polymers in order to achieve high energy density, broadening their practical applications.

Optimizing Perovskite Thin‐Film Parameter Spaces with Machine Learning‐Guided Robotic Platform for High‐Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract Simultaneously optimizing the processing parameters of functional thin films remains a challenge. The design and utilization of a fully automated platform called SPINBOT is presented for the engineering of solution‐processed functional thin films. The SPINBOT is capable of performing experiments with high sampling variability through the unsupervised processing of hundreds of substrates with exceptional experimental control. Through the iterative optimization process enabled by the Bayesian optimization (BO) algorithm, the SPINBOT explores an intricate parameter space, continuously improving the quality and reproducibility of the produced thin films. This machine learning (ML)‐guided reliable SPINBOT platform enables the acceleration of the optimization process of perovskite solar cells via a simple photoluminescence characterization of films. As a result, this study arrives at an optimal film that, when processed into a solar cell in an ambient atmosphere, immediately yields a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.6% with satisfactory performance reproducibility. The unsealed devices retain 90% of their initial efficiency after 1100 h of continuous operation at 60–65 °C under metal‐halide lamps. It is anticipated that the integration of robotic platforms with the intelligent algorithm will facilitate the widespread adoption of effective autonomous experimentation to address the evolving needs and constraints within the materials science research community.

Optimized NiTe 2 /Ni back contacts via chemical deposition for high performance CdTe solar cells

The development of efficient and stable back contacts remains a major challenge in achieving high performance and long-term stability of CdTe thin-film solar cells. Here, this work revisits the formation of NiTe 2 by chemical bath deposition (CBD) as a back contact for CdTe devices. An optimized CBD recipe, based on high-purity precursors and the addition of copper chloride directly into the bath, was developed and applied to fabricate Cu-doped CdTe solar cells. A modified Cu-free methodology was also applied to Group V doped absorbers. The process included pinhole filling, ion milling, CBD, annealing, and sputtering to form a low-barrier back contact. Devices fabricated using this method achieved consistent open-circuit voltages (V oc ) above 800 mV and fill factors (FF) exceeding 70%. The best Cu-doped devices reached power conversion efficiencies (PCE) above 18 %, and preliminary results with Group V-doped material demonstrated compatibility of the method with high-efficiency, state-of-the-art CdTe devices. This study shows that NiTe 2 /Ni back contacts, formed via an optimized chemical process followed by sputtering of Ni, represent a promising pathway for achieving low-barrier and potentially stable back contacts in modern CdTe photovoltaics.

Rapid microwave-assisted preparation of high-performance bifunctional Ni3Fe/Co-N-C for rechargeable Zn-air battery

Precious metal-free bifunctional catalysts offer scalable possibilities for achieving oxygen cathodes in rechargeable metal-air batteries. Literature thus far suggests that the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (i.e ORR and OER) take place at different active sites. However, the design and preparation of oxygen electrocatalysts with high-performance is still a great challenge. This work develops a general approach to introduce a nanoparticle that offers oxygen evolution reaction sites onto an oxygen reduction reaction catalyst via rapid microwave treatment. The metal–organic frameworks (Co, ZIF-8) derived Co-N-C with high ORR performance is employed as a support to homogeneously disperse OER active Ni3Fe nanoparticles. Potentials of 1.54 V and 0.79 V have been achieved at current densities of 10 mA cm -2 for OER and 3 mA cm -2 toward ORR, respectively. The developed rechargeable Zn-air battery assembled with Ni 3 Fe/Co-N-C as an oxygen-electrode exhibits superior efficiency and robust durability, exceeding that of commercial Pt/C + IrO 2 . Furthermore, the satisfactory activity of our fabricated wristband shows the successfully practical application of flexible Zn-air batteries for wearable devices.
