Model-Independent Description of $B\rightarrow D \pi \ell \nu$ Decays

In this contribution we present a novel, model-independent description of semileptonic $B\rightarrow D \pi \ell \nu$ decays. In addition, we discuss recent developments in the understanding of coupled-channel $D \pi$-$D \eta$-$D_s K$ S-wave scattering and, for the first time, apply them to semileptonic decays. We not only obtain model-independent predictions for kinematic distributions in $B\rightarrow D \pi \ell \nu$ decays, but also rule out the hypothesis that the gap between the inclusive $B\rightarrow X\ell\nu$ branching fraction and the sum over exclusive channels is made up predominantly by $B\rightarrow D^{(\ast)} \eta \ell \nu$ decays.

Quantitative description and correction of longitudinal drifts in the Fermilab linac

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) Linac accepts 750 keV H- ions from the front end and accelerates them to 400 MeV for injection into the Booster rapid cycling synchrotron. Day-to-day drifts in the beam longitudinal trajectory during regular operation are of the order of several degrees. They are believed to cause additional losses in both the Linac and the Booster and are addressed by empirically adjusting cavity phases of front end and Linac RF cavities. This work explores a scheme for expressing these drifts in terms of phase shifts in the low-energy part of the Linac. Such a description allows for a simplified visual representation of the drifts, suggests a clear algorithm for their compensation, and provides a tool for estimating efficiency of such compensation.

Squeeze Film Damper Experimental and Numerical Correlation: Test Setup Description and Parameter Identification of Dry System

The process of characterizing a damper involves both experimental techniques and model simulation. Experiments characterize dynamic behavior of a system through empirical modal analysis using impact and shaker testing. The layout of the test setup is crucial for a low-mass, nonlinear system. Physical arrangement, orientation of the system, and instrumentation affect the results that are discussed in this paper. These results can be used to validate a numerical simulation of the same system. With a validated model, important physical input parameters and modeling techniques can be determined and implemented in future designs. In other words, this modeling can be used with confidence to design alternative dampers that may be difficult, costly, and time-consuming to characterize experimentally.

An effective description of charge diffusion and energy transport in a charged plasma from holography

We discuss the physics of sound propagation and charge diffusion in a plasma with non-vanishing charge density. Our analysis culminates the program initiated in to construct an open effective field theory of low-lying modes of the stress tensor and charge current in such plasmas. We model the plasma holographically as a Reissner-Nordström-AdS d+1 black hole, and study linearized fluctuations of longitudinally polarized scalar gravitons and photons in this background. We demonstrate that the perturbations can be decoupled and repackaged into the dynamics of two designer scalars, whose gravitational coupling is modulated by a non-trivial dilatonic factor. The holographic analysis allows us to isolate the phonon mode from the charge diffusion mode, and identify the combination of currents that corresponds to each of them. We use these results to obtain the real-time Gaussian effective action, which includes both the retarded response and the associated stochastic (Hawking) fluctuations, accurate to quartic order in gradients.

Open string QED meson description of the X17 particle and dark matter

As a quark and an antiquark cannot be isolated, the intrinsic motion of a composite $q\overline{q}$ system in its lowest-energy states lies predominantly in 1+1 dimensions, as in an open string with the quark and the antiquark at its two ends. Accordingly, we study the lowest-energy states of an open string $q\overline{q}$ system in QCD and QED in 1+1 dimensions. We show that π 0 , η, and η' can be adequately described as open string $q\overline{q}$ QCD mesons. By extrapolating into the $q\overline{q}$ QED sector in which a quark and an antiquark interact with the QED interaction, we find an open string isoscalar I(J π ) = 0(0 - ) QED meson state at 17.9±1.5 MeV and an isovector (I(J π ) = 1(0 - ), I 3 = 0) QED meson state at 36.4±3.8 MeV. The predicted masses of the isoscalar and isovector QED mesons are close to the masses of the hypothetical X17 and E38 particles observed recently, making them good candidates for these particles. The decay products of QED mesons may show up as excess e + e - and γγ pairs in the anomalous soft photon phenomenon associated with hadron productions in high-energy hadron-proton collisions and e + -e - annihilations. Measurements of the invariant masses of excess e + e - and γγ pairs will provide tests for the existence of the open string $q\overline{q}$ QED mesons. An assembly of gravitating QED mesons are expected to emit electron-positron pairs and/or gamma rays and their decay energies and lifetimes will be modified by their gravitational binding energies. Consequently, a self-gravitating isoscalar QED meson assembly whose mass M and radius R satisfy (M/M ⊙ )/(R/R ⊙ ) ≳ 2 4.71 × 10 5 will not produce electron-positron pairs nor gamma rays and may be a good candidate for the primordial dark matter.

The Relevance of Pion-Exchange Contributions Versus Contact Terms in the Chiral Effective Field Theory Description of Nucleon–Nucleon Scattering

The standard way to demonstrate the relevance of chiral symmetry for the NN interaction is to consider higher partial waves of NN scattering which are controlled entirely by chiral pion-exchanges (since contacts vanish). However, in applications of NN-potentials to nuclear structure and reactions, the lower partial waves are the important ones, making the largest contributions. Lower partial waves are sensitive to the short-range potential, and so, when the short-range contacts were to dominate over the chiral pion contributions in lower partial waves, then the predictions from chiral potentials would have little to do with chiral symmetry. To address this issue, we investigate systematically the role of the (chiral) one- and two-pion exchanges, on the one hand, and the effect of the contacts, on the other hand, in the lower partial waves of NN scattering. We are able to clearly identify the signature of chiral symmetry in lower partial waves. Furthermore, our study has also a pedagogical spinoff as it demonstrates in detail how the reproduction of the lower partial-wave phase shifts comes about from the various ingredients of the theory.

Classical and quantum description of a periodically driven multi-photon anharmonic oscillator

The Hamiltonian and hence the relevant equations of motion involving the dynamics of a driven classical anharmonic oscillator of 2m-th anaharmonicity are constructed. In order to derive the model of a driven multi-photon quantum anharmonic oscillator, we neglect the non-conserving energy terms. Assuming the periodical nature of the driven/forcing term, the dynamical nature of the field operators are expressed in terms of the coupling constant, excitation/photon number and the driven parameters. The solutions are found useful for investigating the squeezing effects and the antibunching of photons of the radiation field prepared in the initial thermal/Fock states. The squeezing effects of the radiation field is found impossible. However, a clear signature of the antibunching of photons is exhibited. It corroborates the fact that the presence of one nonclassical phenomenon does not warrant the presence of the second one. The solutions presented here are exact analytical in nature. Nevertheless, a detailed investigation on the driven quantum anharmonic oscillator is not done before. The present investigation will be of fundamental importance.

The SuperCam Instrument Suite on the Mars 2020 Rover: Science Objectives and Mast-Unit Description

On the NASA 2020 rover mission to Jezero crater, the remote determination of the texture, mineralogy and chemistry of rocks is essential to quickly and thoroughly characterize an area and to optimize the selection of samples for return to Earth. As part of the Perseverance payload, SuperCam is a suite of five techniques that provide critical and complementary observations via Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Time-Resolved Raman and Luminescence (TRR/L), visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VISIR), high-resolution color imaging (RMI), and acoustic recording (MIC). SuperCam operates at remote distances, primarily 2–7 m, while providing data at sub-mm to mm scales. We report on SuperCam’s science objectives in the context of the Mars 2020 mission goals and ways the different techniques can address these questions. The instrument is made up of three separate subsystems: the Mast Unit is designed and built in France; the Body Unit is provided by the United States; the calibration target holder is contributed by Spain, and the targets themselves by the entire science team. This publication focuses on the design, development, and tests of the Mast Unit; companion papers describe the other units. The goal of this work is to provide an understanding of the technical choices made, the constraints that were imposed, and ultimately the validated performance of the flight model as it leaves Earth, and it will serve as the foundation for Mars operations and future processing of the data.

Machine learning-driven descriptions of protein dynamics at solid-liquid interfaces

This chapter has described how ML has enabled quantitative analysis of HS-AFM data to discover the physical phenomena governing protein dynamics and ordering at solid-liquid interfaces. The research detailed in this chapter modeled the rotation models of protein nanorods, the discovery of which would otherwise not be possible. By tracking the trajectories of individual protein rods from frame to frame, it was possible to model Brownian type motion and behaviors and Levy-flight dynamics that had not previously been shown. We also described the application of the Python package AtomAI, which has been developed specifically to analyze and extract physical phenomena, providing exemplar code for training an ensemble of deep neural networks to produce the semantic segmentation of AFM data and functions for encoding and decoding local environments. We last described a combinatorial approach to analyze very noisy data with a densely covered substrate where the emergence of order for the protein liquid crystals could be elucidated. By combining the methods from Case 1 and 2, it was possible to obtain the center of mass and angle for each rod in the images and track the assembly of the rods over time into a 2D liquid crystal array on the surface of mica.

Description of a novel extremophile green algae, Chlamydomonas pacifica , and its potential as a biotechnology host

We present the comprehensive characterization of a newly identified microalga, Chlamydomonas pacifica , originally isolated from a soil sample in San Diego, CA, USA. This species showcases remarkable biological versatility, including a broad pH range tolerance (6–11.5), high thermal tolerance (up to 42 °C), and salinity resilience (up to 2 % NaCl). Its amenability to genetic manipulation and sexual reproduction via mating, particularly between the two opposing strains CC-5697 & CC-5699, now publicly available through the Chlamydomonas Resource Center, underscores its potential as a biotechnological chassis. The biological assessment of C. pacifica revealed versatile metabolic capabilities, including diverse nitrogen assimilation capability, motility and phototaxis. Genomic and transcriptomic analyses identified 17,829 genes within a 121 Mb genome, featuring a GC content of 61 %. The codon usage of C. pacifica closely mirrors that of C. reinhardtii , indicating a conserved genetic architecture that supports a trend in codon preference with minor variations. Phylogenetic analyses position C. pacifica within the core-Reinhardtinia clade yet distinct from known Volvocales species. The lipidomic data revealed an abundance of triacylglycerols (TAGs), promising for biofuel applications and lipids for health-related benefits. Our investigation lays the groundwork for exploiting C. pacifica in biotechnological applications, from biofuel generation to synthesizing biodegradable plastics, positioning it as a versatile host for future bioengineering endeavors.
