Representing the Future Role of Hydropower and Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) in Electricity Planning Tools

Existing tools for long-term electric sector planning struggle to represent hydropower's nuanced site-specific technical and operating characteristics, which depend on technical specifications as well as water management practices and regulations. As a result, long-term planning models and tools insufficiently characterize hydropower value and incentives, and they cannot fully represent the role hydropower can play in a future electricity system that could include a high penetration of variable wind and solar generation, battery storage, and other low-carbon technologies. This presentation demonstrates the culmination of a multi-year effort to enhance hydropower representations in electricity planning models at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), as part of the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) HydroWIRES Initiative. New modeling techniques are demonstrated using the NREL Regional Energy Deployment System (ReEDS), an open-access electric sector capacity expansion model used extensively in a wide range of technology deployment and integration analysis, including the 2016 USDOE Hydropower Vision. ReEDS uses a least-cost optimization approach to understand investment and operation of electricity generation, storage, and transmission technologies under future scenarios of electricity technology innovation, demand, policy, and other sectoral drivers. ReEDS was modified to better represent value and opportunities for both pumped storage hydropower (PSH) and hydropower systems without pumping. We incorporated a new national closed-loop PSH resource and cost assessment to explore new PSH deployment opportunities and added plant-level data to better represent the existing PSH fleet. New upgrade pathways enable opportunities for enhanced hydropower flexibility by adding pumps, upgrading dispatchability, increasing capacity, or increasing energy availability. The model was also modified to better represent the value of long-duration energy storage beyond diurnal time scales, allowing both hydropower and PSH to better balance energy supply and demand variations in high-renewable systems. These new features are demonstrated under reference and high-renewable futures and a range of sensitivity scenarios to understand which hydropower and PSH deployment and upgrade opportunities are the most attractive. These scenarios indicate potential for new closed-loop PSH deployment and for hydropower flexibility improvements to have important impacts on long-term electricity system emissions and economic outcomes. Increasing flexibility of the existing hydropower fleet can reduce the need to invest in new flexible grid technologies and help achieve decarbonization goals. Systems with sufficient energy storage could also be valuable for balancing seasonal differences in renewable energy availability, particularly from solar energy. The methods developed for ReEDS and subsequent scenario results reveal important considerations for future hydropower and grid system planning, and all data and code is freely available in a public code repository for use throughout the hydropower industry.

The Construction of Reduced Order Models for the HYBRID Repository

Reduced order models (ROMs) present an opportunity to reduce the computational burden of IES analysis using HYBRID models without significantly sacrificing data accuracy. Other applications of ROMs are digital twins, stochastic optimization studies, model exporting, and protection of proprietary information. In this paper the capability of creating ROMs of the models within the HYBRID repository will be demonstrated. Specifically, a linear regression ROM of a gas turbine and a dynamic mode decomposition with control (DMDc) ROM of a lithium-ion battery are constructed.

Data-model files associated with the manuscript "Modeling the Effects of Wetland Restoration on Coastal Hydrology: A Case Study of Elkhorn Slough Watershed, California"

This package contains the data, simulation setups, notebooks and figures used in “Modeling the Effects of Wetland Restoration on Coastal Hydrology: A Case Study of Elkhorn Slough Watershed, California” (Xu et al., 2025). In this study, we selected Elkhorn Slough, a tidal estuary, in California, to investigate the impact of wetland restoration and sea level rise on coastal hydrology using the process-based coastal hydrologic model, Advanced Terrestrial Simulator (ATS), informed by site-specific data. We designed a novel modeling workflow for incorporating wetland restoration features into land cover and soil properties for the model parameterization. The validation results demonstrate a strong agreement between modeled and observed data. We studied the characteristics of coastal watershed hydrology, then focused on the surface water dynamics at two wetland sites within Elkhorn Slough, a reference site and a restored site. Our simulation results indicate that the restored site successfully maintains surface elevation, resulting in reduced surface inundation. We also examined the impact of wetland restoration under expected sea level rise over the next few decades. The low-lying Yampah Marsh, the reference site, is likely to be inundated due to future sea level rise when highest tides arrive; while a higher percentage of Hester Marsh, the restored site, would retain marsh vegetation in coming decades, regardless of tidal conditions. Our study provides important information for examining the outcome of restoration practices that include surface elevation in tidal wetlands under climate changes.Several files can be found from this data package.1. README.md: This file describes the title, journal, co-authors, abstract, repository structure and model version.2. Simulation_Setups.zip: The file contains the model configuration files (XML format) for ATS. 3. Notebooks.zip: The file contains the Jupyter notebooks for generating the pre- and post-restoration meshes and the meshes of future scenarios. 4. Figures.zip: The file contains the figures used in the manuscript.5. Data.zip: The file contains the data used to drive the model simulations, including watershed and wetlands boundaries, mesh files and references to additional datasets (e.g., meteorological forcing, tidal dataset, DEMs, land cover, soil properties). Also, it contains water level observations at the restored wetland.

Are System Baselines within OT Environments Feasible?

Critical infrastructure stakeholders need to baseline their systems to understand expected protocol communications.Baseline behaviors may vary based on operational context.Expected operations during a maintenance window, for example, may be different from normal operations.Furthermore, constructing system baselines for Industrial Control Systems (ICS) is difficult and time-consuming.ICS processes generate artifacts expressed across heterogeneous data sources such as network and device logs. There needs to be a corpus of data in order to develop and compare methods that evaluate the feasibility, performance, and generality of approaches to construct baselines for ICS events. Standalone repositories of network packet captures are insufficient to develop methods to classify or recognize operational events expressed across multiple data sources. Moreover, static data corpora do not enable researchers to compare the impact of changing the underlying system for which a baseline is being constructed and this limits the ability to evaluate the performance of system baselines given system changes (e.g. patches, configuration, maintenance events). In order to address these limitations within the community, this talk intends to promote discussion about the state of the practice of constructing baselines. In this manner, we can continue to understand requirements within industry that are not being met by current approaches to baseline construction. This talk builds on two previous talks on the topic of system baselines for OT environments. First, Weaver co-presented at the RSA Conference ICS Sandbox with Dan Gunter. The talk confirmed the need within industry to construct baselines across multiple types of data sources relative to the semantics of specific business processes. Second, Weaver presented at IEEE Security and Privacy Workshop on Language-Theoretic Security.

Report priority gaps in high temperature thermodynamic data (Interim Progress Report)

This interim progress report (Level 4 Milestone Number M4SF-26LL010203023) summarizes research conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) within the Argillite Host Rock Properties & Processes SF-26LL01020302. Our focus is to assess gaps in data availability and understanding for radionuclide thermodynamics within the context of a “hot repository” concept and expand SUPCRT-NE database development to address higher temperatures needed for a DPC DGR disposal concept. The database is intended to inform the argillite GDSA baseline model. The leading European thermochemical database (Thermochimie) is only applicable to temperatures below 80°C. Thus, a US effort to integrate and expand upon other international thermodynamics database efforts is needed, particular if a “hot repository” concept moves forward.

A data-driven perspective on the colours of metal–organic frameworks

Colour is at the core of chemistry and has been fascinating humans since ancient times. It is also a key descriptor of optoelectronic properties of materials and is often used to assess the success of a synthesis. However, predicting the colour of a material based on its structure is challenging. In this work, we leverage subjective and categorical human assignments of colours to build a model that can predict the colour of compounds on a continuous scale. In the process of developing the model, we also uncover inadequacies in current reporting mechanisms. For example, we show that the majority of colour assignments are subject to perceptive spread that would not comply with common printing standards. To remedy this, we suggest and implement an alternative way of reporting colour—and chemical data in general. All data is captured in an objective, and standardised, form in an electronic lab notebook and subsequently automatically exported to a repository in open formats, from where it can be interactively explored by other researchers. We envision this to be key for a data-driven approach to chemical research.

COVID19 Disease Map, a computational knowledge repository of virus–host interaction mechanisms

We need to effectively combine the knowledge from surging literature with complex datasets to propose mechanistic models of SARS-CoV-2 infection, improving data interpretation and predicting key targets of intervention. Here, we describe a large-scale community effort to build an open access, interoperable and computable repository of COVID-19 molecular mechanisms. The COVID-19 Disease Map (C19DMap) is a graphical, interactive representation of disease-relevant molecular mechanisms linking many knowledge sources. Notably, it is a computational resource for graph-based analyses and disease modelling. To this end, we established a framework of tools, platforms and guidelines necessary for a multifaceted community of biocurators, domain experts, bioinformaticians and computational biologists. The diagrams of the C19DMap, curated from the literature, are integrated with relevant interaction and text mining databases. We demonstrate the application of network analysis and modelling approaches by concrete examples to highlight new testable hypotheses. This framework helps to find signatures of SARS-CoV-2 predisposition, treatment response or prioritisation of drug candidates. Such an approach may help deal with new waves of COVID-19 or similar pandemics in the long-term perspective.

ESS-DIVE Reporting Format for File-level Metadata

The ESS-DIVE reporting format for file-level metadata (FLMD) provides granular information at the data file level to describe the contents, scope, and structure of the data file to enable comparison of data files within a data package. The FLMD are fully consistent with and augment the metadata collected at the data package level. We developed the FLMD template based on a review of a small number of existing FLMD in use at other agencies and repositories with valuable input from the Environmental Systems Science (ESS) Community. Also included is a template for a CSV Data Dictionary where users can provide file-level information about the contents of a CSV data file (e.g., define column names, provide units). Files are in .csv, .xlsx, and .md. Templates are in both .csv and .xlsx (open with e.g. Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice, or Google Sheets). Open the .md files by downloading and using a text editor (e.g. Notepad or TextEdit). Though we provide Excel templates for the file-level metadata reporting format, our instructions encourage users to 'Save the FLMD template as a CSV following the CSV Reporting Format guidance'. In addition, we developed the ESS-DIVE File Level Metadata Extractor which is a lightweight python script that can extract some FLMD fields following the recommended FLMD format and structure.

ATCCfinder - Download and Search the ATCC Genome Portal

Much strain-specific sequence data exists in research conducted before the deployment of large sequencing repositories, making it challenging to identify and validate the identity of strains used in these studies through bioinformatics and phenotyping. The American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) is an organization that sells a wide variety of microbes with strain-level taxonomy classification and associated sequenced reference genomes. Currently, ATCC does not provide a method for searching for sequence similarity between a query sequence and their database of reference genomes. Here I propose the software ATCCfinder, which utilizes ATCC application interface software (API) to generate query-able databases from ATCC Genome resources.
