A Study of the Effects of Relative Humidity on Small Particle Adhesion to Surfaces

Ambient dust ranging in size from less than one micron up to 140 microns was used as test particles. Relative humidities of 33% to 100% were used to condition test surfaces after loading with the test particles. A 20 psi nitrogen blowoff was used as the removal mechanism to test for particle adhesion. Particles were counted before and after blowoff to determine retention characteristics. Particle adhesion increased drastically as relative humidity increased above 50%. The greatest adhesion changes occurred within the first hour of conditioning time. Data are presented for total particle adhesion, for particles 10 microns and larger, and 50 microns and larger.

Experiment M408: Beta spectrometer

The beta spectrometer functioned as planned throughout the Gemini 10 mission. The cool temperatures that were recorded from the instrument during the mission were indicative that the evaporative cooler, coupled with apparently lower-than-expected spacecraft-adapter temperatures, maintained ideal operating conditions. The data facilitate a good analysis of the electron directional distribution. The omnidirectional flux that was calculated is apparently consistent with previous measurements. Representative electron spectra, measured during the Gemini 12 mission, established the apparent decay of the artificially injected electrons (from the Starfish high altitude nuclear test) to such low levels that natural trapped electrons were becoming detectable.

Remote sensing of ocean color from aircraft

Over 3000 ocean spectra of sunlight backscattered from the upper layers of the sea have been obtained at flight altitudes to 10,000 feet together with detailed ground truth. These spectra are from stations which include a wide range of water masses differing as to biological and physical condition. This data bank and the analysis already performed demonstrates the probable feasibility of using ocean color as a parameter to locate areas of special significance to physical oceanographers and marine biologists from aircraft and satellites.

Flammability tests for Apollo command module and lunar module mockup

The flammability test program for Apollo command module and lunar module mockups is described. The fire safety design of the modules was verified by performing deliberate ignitions at many locations while the interior atmosphere was controlled to simulate realistic flight conditions. The data obtained for each test and restrictions on various materials are discussed.

Effects of ground proximity on the aerodynamic characteristics of a six-jet V/STOL configuration with four swing-out lift jets

A wind-tunnel investigation has been made of the effects of ground proximity on the longitudinal and lateral-directional aerodynamic characteristics and jet-interference effects of a model of a jet V/STOL variable-sweep fighter airplane that employs four direct-lift engines which swing out from the fuselage ahead of the wing and two lift-cruise engines located in the rear part of the fuselage. Data were obtained through a range of angles of attack and sideslip at simulated speeds from hover through transition at various heights of the model above a moving-belt ground plane. Power-off data and power-on data at several power conditions are presented. The data are presented without analysis or discussion.

Methods of measurement for semiconductor materials, process control, and devices

Activities directed toward the development of methods of measurement for semiconductor materials, process control, and devices are described. Topics investigated include: measurements of transistor delay time; application of the infrared response technique to the study of radiation-damaged, lithium-drifted silicon detectors; and identification of a condition that minimizes wire flexure and reduces the failure rate of wire bonds in transistors and integrated circuits under slow thermal cycling conditions. Supplementary data concerning staff, standards committee activities, technical services, and publications are included as appendixes.

High performance N2O4/amine elements: Data dump covering. Task 1: Literature review

The phenomenon of reactive stream separation (RSS) in the N2O4/amine earth-storable propellant combinations is reviewed. Early theoretical models of RSS are presented, as are experimental combustion data under simulated rocket conditions. N2O4/amine combustion chemistry data is also provided. More recent work in the development of a comprehensive model is described.

Results of pressure distribution tests of a 0.010-scale space shuttle orbiter model (61-0) in the NASA/ARC 3.5-foot hypersonic wind tunnel (test OH38), volume 1

Test results are presented of hypersonic pressure distributions at simulated atmospheric entry conditions. Pressure data were obtained at Mach numbers of 7.4 and 10.4 and Reynolds numbers of 3.0 and 6.5 million per foot. Data are presented in both plotted and tabulated data form. Photographs of wind tunnel apparatus and test configurations are provided.

Aerodynamic performance of 0.4066-scale model to JT8D refan stage

The aerodynamic performance of a scale model of the split flow JT8D rafan stage is presented over a range of flows at speeds from 40 to 100 percent design. The bypass stage peak efficiency of 0.800 occurred at a total weight flow of 35.82 kilograms per second and a pressure ratio of 1.697. The stall margin was 15 percent based on pressure ratio and weight flow at stall and peak efficiency conditions. The data indicated that the hub region of the core stators was choked at design speed over the entire flow range tested.
