Informing Disaster Response: An Introduction to the NASA Disaster Response Coordination System

Satellite observations provide information about the Earth that can be critical to building situational awareness and filling in data gaps during disaster response. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth Science Division’s Disasters Program aims to advance Earth science data and information to support management decisions that prevent or mitigate the impacts of disasters. In support of this goal, NASA’s Disaster Response Coordination System (DRCS) manages a One-NASA approach to coordinate and mobilize the Agency’s assets and expertise to provide geospatial information during disasters. The purpose of the DRCS is to advance the utility of Earth observation information for supporting disaster response decision support, build skilled and effective response communities through improved coordination, engagement, and learning, and reduce impact to lives and livelihoods by empowering communities to respond to disasters more effectively. The DRCS employs a user-centered, activation framework that begins with direct requests from responders and ends with after-action assessments that feed lessons learned and process improvements. This poster will introduce the DRCS model and approach to expanding the use of Earth observations and geospatial information to support disaster response, share use cases for recent event activations, and highlight initial lessons learned.

Coordination of thermostatically controlled loads with unknown parameters

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for coordination of a population of Thermostatically Controlled Loads (TCLs) with unknown parameters to achieve group objectives including bidding and market clearing strategies designed to motivate self-interested users to realize efficient energy allocation subject to a peak power constraint. In one examples of the disclosed technology, a method of operating a load includes estimating a set of values for unmeasured parameters of the load's thermal environment based on output measurements of the thermal environment, determining an energy response based on the estimated set of values for the unmeasured parameters, and transmitting a bid for power for a finite time period based on the determined energy response to the coordinator. A clearing price is received from the coordinator responsive to the transmitted bid and power is sent to the load responsive to the received clearing price.

Coordination of thermostatically controlled loads

Apparatus and methods for a market-based control framework to coordinate a group of autonomous thermostatically controlled loads (TCL) to achieve system-level objectives with pricing incentives is disclosed. In one example of the disclosed technology, a method of providing power to a load via a power grid by submitting bids to a coordinator includes determining an energy response relating price data for one or more energy prices to quantity data for power to be consumed by the load, sending a bid for power for a finite time period based on the energy response to the coordinator, and receiving a clearing price based on: the bid, on bids received from a plurality of additional loads, and a feeder power constraint. In some examples, the energy response is based at least in part on an equivalent thermal parameter model and a control policy indicating one or more power states for the load.

Metal-olsalazine coordination polymers for medical applications

Olsalazine (H 4 olz), a prodrug of the anti-inflammatory 5-aminosalicylic acid, is used as a ligand to synthesize a suite of M(H 2 olz) and M 2 (olz) materials, where M is a dication (e.g. Mg, Ca, Sr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn). A family of metal olsalazine coordination polymers, coordination solids, and metal organic frameworks are described, which include 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional structures. The materials resist degradation at acidic pH and release olsalazine preferentially at neutral pH. The mesoporous M 2 (olz) frameworks exhibit high surface areas with hexagonal pore apertures that are approximately 27 Å in diameter and contain coordinatively unsaturated metal sites. Biologically active molecules containing a Lewis-basic functional group can be grafted directly to the open metal sites of the frameworks. Dissolution of the frameworks under physiological conditions releases olsalazine (H 4 olz) and the grafted molecules so that multiple therapeutic components can be delivered together at different rates.

Relocation and persistence of named data elements in coordination namespace

An approach is disclosed that relocates a named data element. A request to move a name corresponding to the named data element is received from a first storage area in a Coordination Namespace to a second storage area in the Coordination Namespace. The first storage area has a first level of persistence, and the second storage area has a second level of persistence. The named data element exists in a Coordination Namespace that is allocated in a memory distributed amongst a plurality of nodes that include the local node and one or more remote nodes. The approach then creates a copy of the named data element in the second storage area.

Distributed Coordination of Demand-side Flexible Resources in Microgrid with All-Time Feasibility

The prevalence of distributed renewable generators motivates microgrid operators to exploit demand-side flexible resources (DFRs). Due to their dispersed nature, distributed DFR coordination has been a vibrant research area, while there are several issues awaiting to be addressed. On one hand, DFR power is internally coupled through power flow, while DFR usually cannot access grid information. On the other hand, in time-restricted scenarios, solution feasibility cannot be guaranteed by conventional dual-based algorithms. To fill these gaps, we propose a distributed DFR coordination framework with all-time feasibility. The proposed framework accounts for the distinct access of microgrid entities to grid information. A distributed and all-time feasible algorithm is proposed for optimal DFR coordination, which allows DFRs to make local decisions without violating constraints throughout iterations. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through case studies. The impact of peer-to-peer communication links on algorithm convergence is also investigated, which emphasizes the balance between communication investment and algorithm performance.

Enhancing Grid Resilience with HIVE: Decentralized V2G Coordination for Black Starts

This paper proposes the HIVE (Harmonized Integration of Vehicle Energy for Grid Support) model, a novel game-theoretic framework for decentralized coordination of electrified vehicles to enable black start and load restoration during grid outages. In the absence of a central controller, HIVE employs a cooperative game to model vehicle interactions, allowing autonomous decision-making while admitting to a Nash equilibrium for grid restoration. The framework addresses the heterogeneity of vehicles and their operational constraints, selecting a lead vehicle for grid-forming and coordinating grid-following vehicles to support prioritized loads. Applied to a hospital blackout scenario, HIVE demonstrates robust performance in forming an islanded microgrid and sustaining critical loads under varying vehicle availability, state of charge, and power constraints. Simulation results highlight the model’s effectiveness in ensuring decentralized coordination of energy allocation and prioritizing loads, offering a scalable solution for resilient grid operations.

Theoretical Investigation of 2D Conductive Microporous Coordination Polymers as Li-S Battery Cathode with Ultrahigh Energy Density

Even though tremendous achievement has been made experimentally in the performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery, theoretical studies in this area are lagging behind due to the complexity of the Li–S systems and the effects of solvent. Because of this, a new methodology is developed for investigating the 2D hexaaminobenzene-based coordination polymers (2D-HAB-CPs) as cathode candidate materials for Li–S batteries via density functional theory calculations in combination with an in-house developed charge polarized solvent model and a genetic algorithm structure global search code. With high ratios of transition metal atoms and two-coordinated nitrogen atoms, excellent electric conductivity, and structural porosity, the 2D-HAB-CP is able to address all of the three main challenges facing Li–S batteries: confining the lithium polysulfides from dissolution, facilitating the electron conductivity and buffering the volumetric expansion during the lithiation process. In addition, the theoretical energy density of this system is as high as 1395 Wh kg -1 . These results demonstrate that the 2D-HAB-CP is a promising cathode material for Li–S batteries. The proposed computational framework not only opens a new avenue for understanding the key role played by solution and liquid electrolytes in Li–S batteries, but also can be generally applied to other processes with liquids involved.

Modification of the Coordination Environment of Active Sites on MoC for High-Efficiency CH 4 Production

Modulating the coordination environment of active sites on catalyst surfaces is crucial to developing effective catalysts and controlling catalysis, but it is highly challenging. Guided by our first-principles calculations, we experimentally accomplish the modification of the coordination environment of active sites on MoC nanoparticle surfaces by anchoring pyridinic N atom rings of holey graphene on Mo atoms. The rings produce electrostatic forces that enable the tuning of the Mo sites' affinity to reaction intermediates, which passivates Mo hollow sites, activates Mo top sites and reduces the over-adsorption of OH on the Mo active sites, as predicted by the calculations. The atomic-level modification is well confirmed by atomic-resolution imaging, high-resolution electron tomography, synchrotron soft X-ray spectroscopy and operando electrochemical infrared spectroscopy. Consequently, the Faradaic efficiency for CO 2 reduction to CH 4 is enhanced from 16% to 89%, a record high efficiency so far, in aqueous electrolyte. Meantime, it also exhibits a negligible activity loss over 50 h.

Toward Complete Transformation of Sodium Polysulfides by Regulating the Second-Shell Coordinating Environment of Atomically Dispersed Fe

Room temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries are highly competitive as potential energy storage devices. Nevertheless, their actually achieved reversible capacities are far below the theoretical value due to incomplete transformation of polysulfides. Herein, atomically dispersed Fe-N/S active center by regulating the second-shell coordinating environment of Fe single atom is proposed. The Fe-N4S2 coordination structure with enhanced local electronic concentration around the Fermi level is revealed via synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and theoretical calculations, which can not only significantly promote the transformation kinetics of polysulfides, but induce uniform Na deposition for dendrite-free Na anode. Here as a result, the obtained S cathode delivers a high initial reversible capacity of 1590 mAh g-1, nearly the theoretical value. Here this work opens up a new avenue to facilitate the complete transformation of polysulfides for RT Na-S batteries.

Insight into the structural ambiguity of actinide(IV) oxalate sheet structures: a case for alternate coordination geometries

Plutonium(IV) oxalate hexahydrate (Pu(C 2 O 4 ) 2 ∙ 6H 2 O; PuOx) is an important intermediate in the recovery of plutonium from used nuclear fuel. Its formation via precipitation is well studied, yet its crystal structure remains unknown. Instead, the crystal structure of PuOx is assumed to be isostructural with neptunium(IV) oxalate hexahydrate (Np(C 2 O 4 ) 2 ∙ 6H 2 O; NpOx) and uranium(IV) oxalate hexahydrate (U(C 2 O 4 ) 2 ∙ 6H 2 O; UOx) despite the high degree of unresolved disorder that exists when determining water positions in the crystal structures of the latter two compounds. Such assumptions regarding the isostructural behavior of the actinide elements have been used to predict the structure of PuOx for use in a wide range of studies. Herein, we report the first crystal structures for PuOx and Th(C 2 O 4 ) 2 · 6H 2 O (ThOx). This data, along with new characterization of UOx and NpOx, has resulted in the full determination of the structures and resolution of the disorder around the water molecules. Specifically, we identify the coordination of two water molecules with each metal center, which necessitates a change in oxalate coordination mode from axial to equatorial that has not been reported in the literature. Here this work exemplifies the need to revisit previous assumptions regarding fundamental actinide chemistry, which are heavily relied upon within the current nuclear field.

New-Generation Carbon-Capture Ionic Liquids Regulated by Metal-Ion Coordination

Development of efficient carbon capture-and-release technologies with minimal energy input is a long-term challenge in mitigating CO 2 emissions, especially via CO 2 chemisorption driven by engineered chemical bond construction. Herein, taking advantage of the structural diversity of ionic liquids (ILs) in tuning their physical and chemical properties, precise reaction energy regulation of CO 2 chemisorption was demonstrated deploying metal-ion-amino-based ionic liquids (MAILs) as absorbents. The coordination ability of different metal sites (Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, and Mg) to amines was harnessed to achieve fine-tuning on stability constants of the metal ion-amine complexes, acting as the corresponding cations in the construction of diverse ILs coupled with CO 2 -philic anions. The as-afforded MAILs exhibited efficient and controllable CO 2 release behavior with great reduction in energy input and minimal sacrifice on CO 2 uptake capacity. This coordination-regulated approach offers new prospects for the development of ILs-based systems and beyond towards energy-efficient carbon capture technologies.

The Random Change of Coordination Number in the Blume-Capel Model

The spin-1 Blume-Capel model is investigated under the random change of coordination numbers on the Bethe lattice (BL). Various coordination numbers are taken as couples and varied randomly on the shells of the BL. The randomization is realized in the standard-random approach and the formulation is obtained in terms of exact recursion relations. The phase diagrams are obtained by calculating the places of the second- and first-order phase transitions and tricritical points.

Birational Darboux Coordinates on Nilpotent Coadjoint Orbits of Classical Complex Lie Groups, the Case of 2 × 2 Jordan Blocks

We consider the problem of constructing birational Darboux coordinates on nilpotent coadjoint orbits of the complex Lie groups SO(N, ℂ) and Sp(N, ℂ). The nilpotent case is the most difficult one. Difficulties arise if the Jordan form of matrices from the orbit under consideration contains Jordan blocks of sizes of different parity. The desired coordinates have been found on orbits consisting of matrices with 1 × 1 and 2 × 2 Jordan blocks. Explicit formulas for them are given in the paper.

Modeling of three-dimensional surfaces using high-level canonical piecewise-linear functions in cylindrical coordinates

In this paper, the potential application of the high-level canonical piecewise-linear model in the field of three-dimensional visualization is proposed. This idea emerges from the premise that a three-dimensional surface can be modeled by a continuous two-dimensional function. In this regard, the main contribution consists in providing a methodology for the construction of such function. For this purpose, the well-known algorithm used in the high-level canonical piecewise-linear model has been modified to achieve functions with greater graphing capability. One of the most notorious changes made with respect to the traditional methodology is the use of a new scheme of function domain partition. Contrary to the simplicial partitioning, in our proposal, an equally distributed angular partitioning is considered. With this, the resulting approximate function is expressed in cylindrical coordinates which overcome the typical limitation of graphs in Cartesian coordinates of only representing single-valued surfaces. Another remarkable change can be found in the range of evaluation of the function. Instead of using an open interval, in our approach, a closed interval from 0 to 2π is adopted. To support this proposal, illustrative case studies are reported. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of this type of representation model not only in visual perception of three-dimensional surfaces, but also in more complex tasks like volume estimation.
