Abstracts for the Planetary Geology Field Conference

The conference was to foster a better understanding of the volcanic history of the planets through the presentation of papers and through field trips to areas on the basalt plains of Idaho that appear to be analogous to some planetary surfaces. Papers include discussions of the volcanic geology of the Snake River Plain, general volcanic geology, and aspects of volcanism on the terrestrial planets.

Space manufacturing facilities: Space colonies; Proceedings of the Princeton Conference, Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., May 7-9, 1975

Reports submitted to the conference encompass: administration and law relating to inhabited space facilities and colonies; space manufacturing and processing; organization and construction of space habitats and management of space colony farms; winning and acquisition of lunar and asteroidal materials for sustaining autonomous space colonies. Attention is given to trajectories between earth, low earth orbit, earth-moon libration points (specifically L5), circumlunar parking orbits, and trajectories in translunar space; effects of low gravity and zero gravity on human physiology and on materials processing; architecture and landscaping for space colonies; closed ecosystems of space colonies. Varieties of human cultures and value hierarchies around the earth are examined for broader perspectives on the social organization of space colonies.

A report of a Conference on Advanced Composites: An Assessment of the Future

A conference was held to evaluate the current status and future commitment to composites by government and industry. This reassessment, was felt needed because of an apparent transition in the acceptance of composites. The management of government agencies restated their progress and commitment to the development of composites and industrial management defined their concerns and requirements to commit to the future use of composites.

Western Regional Remote Sensing Conference Proceedings, 1979

Remote sensing users from the 14 western states explained their diverse applications of LANDSAT data, discussed operational goals, and exchanged problems and solutions. In addition, conference participants stressed the need for increased cooperation among state and local governments, private industry, and universities to aid NASA's objective of transferring to user agencies the ability to operationally use remote sensing technology for resource and environmental quality management.

Conference on Applications of Digital Image Processing to Astronomy, Pasadena, Calif., August 20-22, 1980, Proceedings

The astronomic applications of non-military digital image processing are covered in this conference volume. Systems like CCD's, interactive data analysis facilities, stellar speckle interferometry, sky flux subsystems, guide star systems and various image processing systems are described. Techniques in photometry including filtering, automatic photometry, and image restoration are examined. Digital spectral analyses of galaxies, supernova remnants, stars and other celestial bodies are discussed together with algorithms developed to calibrate, clean up, enhance, and quantitatively analyze data. The techniques of image processing permit astronomers to make much more efficient use of their data for both subjective and quantitative analyses. Future missions, such as the Space Telescope, representing a vast data base are briefly covered.

Technical Communication: Perspectives for the Eighties, Part 1. Proceedings of the Technical Communications Sessions at the 32Nd Annual Meeting of the Conference on College Composition and Communication

Proceeding of the technical communication sessions at the 32nd annual meeting of the Conference on College Composition and Communication held in Dallas, Texas, March 26-28, 1981 are summarized. The proceeding suggest that technical communication has become an important subfield and is becoming an intrinsic part of many undergraduate curricula. Technical communication as a separate discipline, however, is relatively new. For that reason, proceedings that can make current research available as quickly as possible are suggested for preparation. The following topics were addressed: (1) a history and definition of technical writing, (2) the case method is technical communication (3) teaching technical writing (4) oral communication and rhetorical theory, and (5) new approaches in and practical applications of technical writing.

The Conference on High Temperature Electronics

The status of and directions for high temperature electronics research and development were evaluated. Major objectives were to (1) identify common user needs; (2) put into perspective the directions for future work; and (3) address the problem of bringing to practical fruition the results of these efforts. More than half of the presentations dealt with materials and devices, rather than circuits and systems. Conference session titles and an example of a paper presented in each session are (1) User requirements: High temperature electronics applications in space explorations; (2) Devices: Passive components for high temperature operation; (3) Circuits and systems: Process characteristics and design methods for a 300 degree QUAD or AMP; and (4) Packaging: Presently available energy supply for high temperature environment.
