Understanding the Chemomechanical Function of the Silver–Carbon Interlayer in Sheet-type All-Solid-State Lithium–Metal Batteries

All-solid-state batteries with lithium metal anodes hold great potential for high-energy battery applications. However, forming and maintaining stable solid–solid contact between the lithium anode and solid electrolyte remains a major challenge. One promising solution is the use of a silver–carbon (Ag–C) interlayer, but its chemomechanical properties and impact on interface stabilities need to be comprehensively explored. Here, we examine the function of Ag–C interlayers in addressing interfacial challenges using various cell configurations. Experiments show that the interlayer improves interfacial mechanical contact, leading to a uniform current distribution and suppressing lithium dendrite growth. Furthermore, the interlayer regulates lithium deposition in the presence of Ag particles via improved Li diffusivity. The sheet-type cells with the interlayer achieve a high energy density of 514.3 Wh L –1 and an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.97% over 500 cycles. Furthermore, this work provides insights into the benefits of using Ag–C interlayers for enhancing the performance of all-solid-state batteries.

Nanoscale Miscibility in In Situ Polymerized Hybrid Electrolytes Speeds Up Ion Dynamics and Enables Stable Cycling of Li Metal Batteries

While the potential use of copolymerized electrolytes in Li metal batteries is subject to intense investigation, the fundamental understanding of the nanoscale domain formation and its effect on Li + transport is still lacking. In this study, we investigated the correlation between the Li + transport mechanism and the miscibility of monomers in polymer blend electrolytes derived from the in situ copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and vinylene carbonate (VC) in the presence of polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEGDME) plasticizer and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt. The addition of a polar short chain plasticizer reduced the dynamic and structural heterogeneities of the electrolyte. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements and coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to investigate the nanoscale structure of the electrolytes. The distribution of relaxation times corresponding to the three distinct diffusion mechanisms of the free and interfacial Li + ions at the copolymer/plasticizer and electrolyte/SEI boundaries was analyzed in a broad temperature range to elucidate the Li + transport mechanism. Furthermore, the chemical composition of the SEI and the contribution of a ceramic lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (LLZO, Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 ) phase on the interfacial resistance, salt degradation, and SEI stability were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profile analysis and electrochemical testing.

Non-linear elastic-plastic behavior of the invert glass lithium phosphorous oxynitride (LiPON)

Micro and nano-scale mechanical behavior of network/ionic glasses is dictated by their composition and the number of constraints per structural unit. From this perspective, the glass LiPON presents the opportunity for enhancement of the microscale ductility due to its rather unconstrained orthophosphate structure. Here, we use instrumented nanoindentation with different tip geometries to investigate the mechanical response of LiPON glass. The results reveal that the elastic modulus of LiPON is not constant and depends on pressure. With the method utilizing spherical nanoindentation and continuous stiffness measurement (CSM) we determine the yield point of LiPON. We propose the Drucker-Prager type of yield criterion for LiPON and estimate its yield stress in compression as 2.4 GPa. There exists another stress threshold, however, around 490 MPa, at which the elastic deformation becomes non-linear, and this can be mistaken for the yield stress.

Ternary Potassium‐Bismuth‐Telluride Intermetallic Support Promotes Electrochemical Stability in Potassium Metal Anodes

We employed accumulative roll bonding to fabricate self‐standing metallurgical composite of in situ formed alkaline potassium‐bismuth‐telluride intermetallic K 2 (Bi 2/6 Te 3/6 Vac 1/6 ) embedded in potassium metal. This newly discovered thermodynamically stable potassiophilic crystal, termed “KBT”, is fcc antifluorite with K 2 Te archetype. Symmetric cells achieve 880 h of cycling at 0.5 mA cm −2 and 0.5 mAh cm −2 . Potassium metal battery (KMB) with Prussian blue (PB) cathode in carbonate electrolyte retains 80% capacity after 200 cycles at 1C. In ether‐based electrolyte with organic cathode, it achieves 80% retention after 900 cycles at 2C. Combined synchrotron X‐ray nano‐tomography, cryogenic‐focused ion beam microscopy (Cryo‐FIB) and sputter‐down X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrate uniform electrodeposits, versus baseline of potassium filaments intermixed with pores and coarse SEI. Binary K 3 Bi‐K and K 2 Te‐K intermetallic supports also provide improved electrochemical performance, albeit to lesser extent. Multiscale simulation provides insight into role of support structure in adatom energetics, film nucleation, early‐stage SEI morphology and interfacial stability.
