Viking orbiter stereo imaging catalog

The extremely long mission of the two Viking Orbiter spacecraft produced a wealth of photos of surface features. Many of these photos can be used to form stereo images allowing the student of Mars to examine a subject in three dimensional. This catalog is a technical guide to the use of stereo coverage within the complex Viking imaging data set.

A catalog of red stars near L1454

In view of their potential interest as individual objects of study, a catalog is presented of stars noted by the Duerr and Craine (1982) study of the nature of the dark cloud L1454 to have V-I magnitudes greater than about 2.5. Finding charts are given for these 156 stars, with attention to the individual quadrants of the region studied. The original star counts had been made with Near Infrared Photographic Sky Survey data.

Analysis of the Konus catalog of gamma-ray bursts with the thermal synchrotron model

Approximately 150 reported gamma-ray burst spectra of the Konus catalog are analyzed using the thermal synchrotron model. An overwhelming majority of these spectra can be satisfactorily fitted by theoretical thermal synchrotron spectra of mildly relativistic electrons in strong magnetic fields, making the strong-field neutron star picture at least self-consistent. Valuable additional information is also extracted from various spectral features contained in many of the events.

The 12 micron band of ethane: A spectral catalog from 765 cm(-1) to 900 cm(-1)

The high resolution laboratory absorption spectrum of the 12 micro band of ethane gas is studied. The data were obtained using the McMath Solar Telescope 1 meter Fourier Transform interferometer at Kitt Peak National Observatory and tunable diode laser spectrometers at the University of Tennessee and NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. Over 200 individual vibration rotation transitions were analyzed taking into account many higher order effects including torsional splitting. Line positions were reproduced to better than 0.001/cm. Both ground and upper state molecular constants were determined in the analysis. The experimental details, the analysis procedures and the results are addressed. A list of ethane transitions occurring near (14)CO2 laser lines needed for heterodyne searches for C2H6 in extraterrestrial sources is also included. A spectral catalog of the ethane nu sub g fundamental from 765/cm to 900/cm is provided. A high dispersion (1/cm 12 in.) plot of both the Kitt Peak interferometric data and a simulated spectrum with Doppler limited resolution, a table of over 8500 calculated transitions listed quantum number assignments, frequencies and intensities are provided.

Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) Catalogs and Atlases. Explanatory Supplement

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) mission is described. An overview of the mission, a description of the satellite and its telescope system, and a discussion of the mission design, requirements, and inflight modifications are given. Data reduction, flight tests, flux reconstruction and calibration, data processing, and the formats of the IRAS catalogs and atlases are also considered.

A second catalog of gamma ray bursts: 1978 - 1980 localizations from the interplanetary network

Eighty-two gamma ray bursts were detected between 1978 September 14 and 1980 February 13 by the experiments of the interplanetary network (Prognoz 7, Venera 11 and 12 SIGNE experiments, Pioneer Venus Orbiter, International Sun-Earth Explorer 3, Helios 2, and Vela). Sixty-five of these events have been localized to annuli or error boxes by the method of arrival time analysis. The distribution of sources is consistent with isotropy, and there is no statistically convincing evidence for the detection of more than one burst from any source position. The localizations are compared with those of two previous catalogs.

Limits to the burster repetition rate as deduced from the 2nd catalog of the interplanetary network

The burster repetition rate is an important parameter in many gamma ray burst models. The localizations of the interplanetary network, which have a relatively small combined surface area, may be used to estimate the average repetition rate. The method consists of (1) estimating the number of random overlaps between error boxes expected in the catalog and comparing this number to that actually observed; (2) modeling the response of the detectors in the network, so that the probability of detecting a burst can be estimated; and (3) simulating the arrival of bursts at the network assuming that burster repetition is governed by a Poisson process. The application of this method for many different burster luminosity functions shows that (1) the lower limit to the burster repetition rate depends strongly upon the assumed luminosity function; (2) the best lower limit to the repetition period obtainable from the data of the network is about 100 months; and (3) that a luminosity function for all bursters similar to that of the 1979 Mar 5 burster is inconsistent with the data.

Occultations of stars by solar system objects. VI - Occultations of catalog stars by asteroids in 1986 and 1987

Results are presented of a search for upcoming asteroid occultations involving stars in six major astrometric catalogs containing a total of approximately 326,000 individual stars. Within stated constraints on solar elongation, asteroid angular diameter, orbit quality, and occultation duration, the search is complete for all numbered asteroids. Circumstances of 74 occultations occurring in 1986 and 59 in 1987 are described.

The NASA/JPL pilot ocean data system catalog

Data from various ground and satellite sensors collected and processed by various institutions cannot be used easily without a well planned method of determining their existence and location. The Global On-Line Data (GOLD) Catalog will provide a requestor with the ability to determine the existence of specific data holdings by specifying any combination of platform, measurement, location, or time. By this means, one can obtain details of data held at PODS and also at cooperating remote archives.

An analysis of the Basel star catalog

The standard Bahcall-Soneira (1980) Galaxy model is compared with the data from the 12 fields in the Basel star catalog that are at Galactic latitudes above 20 deg and have E(B-V) of less than 0.1 mag. Good agreement is found between the calculated and observed color distributions, as well as star counts, for all the fields. The globular cluster feature that is observed in the luminosity function of globular clusters near M(v) = +1 to +4 mag is also present in the spheroid field stars. It is possible to assign some of the spheroid stars from the standard two-component Galaxy model (thin disk plus de Vaucouleurs spheroid) to a third stellar component (a thick disk with a spheroid luminosity function) without disturbing the agreement with observations.

Occultations of stars by solar system objects. VII - Occultations of catalog stars by asteroids in 1988 and 1989

Predictions are given for 102 occultations of stars by minor planets occurring in 1988 and 1989. The predictions are based on a computerized comparison of asteroid ephemerides with star positions given in eight major astrometric catalogs. The search is completed for all numbered asteroids whose orbits are accurately known and that reach an angular diameter of at least 0.08 arcsec during the search years. Preliminary information sufficient for planning is given for each occultation.

A catalog of interplanetary type III storms

A catalog describing the characteristics of all the interplanetary type III storms observed at kilometric wavelengths by the radio astronomy experiment on the ISEE-3 spacecraft between September 1978 and October 1982 is presented. Three-dimensional trajectories have been determined for about one-third of these storms using radio techniques. Solar coordinate and solar wind parameters derived from the trajectories are also tabulated. A statistical summary of the data is included.

A catalog of IRAS observations of large optical galaxies

A catalog is presented of IRAS observations of 85 galaxies with blue-light isophotal diameters greater than 8 arcmin. The observations, data processing, and data measurement techniques are described, and total IRAS flux densities and integrated infrared emission properties of the sample are reported. Infrared brightness profiles of the detected galaxies and infrared surface brightness contour maps of the galaxies for which structural features were resolved are displayed. A classification scheme based on the degree of central concentration and spatial structure of the 60 micron emission of the best-resolved galaxies is proposed. The 60 micron and blue-light isophotal diameters of the largest galaxies are compared.
