For geologic systems where carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is injected underground, existing wells represent potential pathways for fluid migration. Here, this study introduces a novel deep learning model to quantify the likelihood and potential magnitude of fluid migration through wellbores at sites with intermediate aquifers or thief zones between the injection units and underground drinking water sources. Synthetic datasets, generated using reservoir simulations, captured a wide range of subsurface conditions, well attributes, operational parameters, and fluid migration scenarios. Among the regression models developed to predict brine and CO 2 leakage rates and CO 2 saturations along leaky wellbores, convolutional neural network (CNN) outperformed both Light Gradient Boosting Machine and deep neural network. Additionally, a CNN-based classification model was created to predict whether brine and CO 2 would leak along a wellbore, further improving performance over regression alone. The best models were integrated into the National Risk Assessment Partnership Open-source Integrated Assessment Model for rapid, stochastic assessment of storage system containment and leakage risks. A case study demonstrated the model’s ability to simulate fluid migration through existing wells with multiple intermediate aquifers. This computationally efficient wellbore model offers value in support of site performance evaluation and risk-informed decision making by stakeholders.
Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) proffer a flexible and environmentally friendly solution to reduce CO 2 emissions and/or produce H 2 fuel for various applications. Here, the integration of this technology with renewable energy systems makes them even more promising in realizing a near-perpetual green energy infrastructure in the near future. SOEC technology has achieved stupendous improvement in recent years, and some of the limiting factors to the commercialization of this technology have been explored. It is, therefore, necessary to have a succinct outlook of the different factors that contribute to the recent developments in SOEC technology. The current work presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art SOEC component materials and their degradation mechanisms, SOEC modeling essentials and efficiencies, and the scalability of SOECs. Although SOEC is considered a highly promising technology and sufficient multifaceted research has been done, yet not been widely commercialized. Despite the improvement to mitigate degradation of the SOEC materials, a large share of the degradation concerns sprang from charge transfer reaction at the triple-phase boundaries of the H 2 -electrode. Part of which can be improved by microkinetic modeling of these materials supported by their characterization to give insight into their development. Some other directions for the future in advancing this technology toward the commercialization stage are thoroughly addressed.

Young patients, including pediatric, adolescent, and young adult (YA) patients, are most likely to benefit from the reduced integral dose of proton beam radiation therapy (PBT) resulting in fewer late toxicities and secondary malignancies. This study sought to examine insurance approval and appeal outcomes for PBT among YA patients compared with pediatric patients at a large-volume proton therapy center.

The two-dimensional thin film, as an effective interface modification layer to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of graphene/silicon (Gr/Si) heterojunction solar cells has attracted extensive attention recently. However, the complicated manufacturing process and specialized equipment requirements impede its broad application. Herein, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) fabricated under the mild reaction condition was first time used to modify Gr/Si devices interface structure. The effects of CQDs size distributions and coating thickness on J-V characteristics and the energy band structure of Gr/CQDs/Si solar cells were systematically analyzed. The findings indicate that the PCE of resulting Gr/CQDs/Si solar cells could reach 9.97% when the thickness and sizes of CQDs interlayer are ~26 nm and 4–7 nm, without any chemical doping, which is 6.8-times PCE than that of virgin Gr/Si solar cells. The CQDs interlayer serves as both an electron blocking layer and hole transport layer to reduce the carrier recombination, leading to a lower reverse saturation current as well as a larger VOC then improved the device performance. The enhanced PCE shows that the CQDs species have the potential applications in a cost-effective photovoltaic device.
In this paper, we report near-zero crossover for vanadium cross-permeation through single-layer graphene immobilized at the interface of two Nafion® polymer electrolyte membranes. Vanadium ion diffusion and migration, including proton mobility through membrane composites, were studied with and without graphene under diffusion and migration conditions. Single-layer graphene was found to effectively inhibit vanadium ion diffusion and migration under specific conditions. The single-layer graphene composites also enabled remarkable ion transmission selectivity improvements over pure Nafion® membranes, with proton transport being four orders of magnitude faster than vanadium ion transport. Resistivity values of 0.02 ± 0.005 Ω cm 2 for proton and 223 ± 4 Ω cm 2 for vanadium ion through single atomic layer graphene are reported. This high selectivity may have significant impact on flow battery applications or for other electrochemical devices where proton conductivity is required, and transport of other species is detrimental. Our results emphasize that crossover may be essentially completely eliminated in some cases, enabling for greatly improved operational viability.

The chemical industry is a major source of economic productivity and employment globally and among the top 3 industrial sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, along with steel and cement. As global demand for chemical products continues to grow, there is an urgency to develop and deploy sustainable chemical production pathways and to reconsider continued investment in current emission-intensive production technologies. This perspective describes the challenges and opportunities to decarbonize the chemical industry via electrification powered by low-carbon electricity supply, both in the near term and long term, and it discusses four technological pathways ranging from the more mature direct substitution of heat with electricity and use of hydrogen to technologically less mature, yet potentially more selective, approaches based on electrochemistry and plasma. Finally, we highlight the key elements of integrating an electrified industrial process with the power sector to leverage process flexibility to reduce energy costs of chemical production and provide valuable power grid support services. Unlocking such plant-to-grid coordination and the four electrification pathways has significant potential to facilitate rapid and deep decarbonization of the chemical industry sector.

Bulk-power grid connection is an emerging bottleneck to the entry of wind, solar, and storage but has been understudied due to a lack of data. We create and analyze two novel interconnection datasets with more than 38,000 project-level observations that provide new information documenting interconnection challenges in the United States. Active grid connection requests are more than double the total installed capacity of the US power plant fleet (2,600 vs. 1,280 GW). The time required to secure a connection has increased by 70% over the last decade, and withdrawal rates remain high at 80%, suggesting a constrained transmission system that jeopardizes energy transition targets. Wide distributions of interconnection costs indicate the inherent uncertainty of the interconnection process. Interconnection requests that identify large transmission upgrades tend to withdraw from the process. These findings suggest the need for interconnection reforms, tighter links between long-term transmission planning and project-level interconnection processes, and more interconnection outcome transparency.
Mixed-halide wide-band-gap perovskites are critical components of highly efficient tandem cells, but their operating stability is limited by halide migration. Metal oxides deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD) have been shown to block halide migration; however, previously pursued methods result in inhomogeneous nucleation and growth. We hypothesized that functionalizing the perovskite surface with ALD-active carboxyl groups could promote nucleation and enable higher-temperature metal oxide growth. We find that 5-ammonium valeric acid iodide (5-AVAI) facilitates the formation of a compact and uniform aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) layer and allows growth at 100°C compared with the previous limit of 75°C. We demonstrate that halide migration into the C 60 electron transport layer is reduced by a factor of 10 compared with the reference case. Finally, Al 2 O 3 -capped perovskite solar cells with a band gap of 1.78 eV retain 90% of their initial power conversion efficiency after 1,000 h of continuous operation under 1-sun illumination at 55°C.
