Using satellite data to assess Hurricane Helene’s impact on vegetation by land use in the CSRA

Many regions within Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina experienced record-breaking rainfall and catastrophic winds due to Hurricane Helene. Helene made landfall on Florida’s big bend on September 26 th , 2024, as a category 4 hurricane, and tracked northward through Georgia and the southern Appalachian Mountains before dissipating on September 29 th , 2024. One significant impact of the hurricane was severe damage to tree canopies across the southeastern United States. This study utilizes satellite-based remotely sensed data provided by the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) to examine the resilience of these tree canopies following the hurricane. Specifically, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Leaf Area Index (LAI), Land Cover Type, Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission datasets were employed to study the tree canopy’s response to such events in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). A significant increase was observed in the LAI in November of 2024. This increase in LAI was likely influenced by warmer-than-average temperatures throughout October of 2024, along with a second record-breaking rainfall event in the CSRA on November 6th, 2024. The LAI increase was then broken down into land cover type to understand which areas contributed most. The complex nature and resilience of trees became evident, offering opportunities for further exploration and application in urban planning, emergency response, and environmental management.

Using Solid Particles as Heat Transfer Fluid-Use in CSP Plants (CRADA Final Report)

NREL assisted the BRIDGE project led by the University of Colorado (CU), Boulder, on developing granular flow and heat transfer simulation tool to serve for an enclosed particle-receiver design. NREL will provide the particle receiver design configuration and operating condition to assist the model setup and may provide certain testing results for model verifications. NREL will attend project reviewing meeting and provide application back-ground including concentrating solar energy technology to collaborate with CU researchers.

Workflow for High-throughput Screening of Enzyme Mutant Libraries Using Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Escherichia coli Colonies

High-throughput molecular screening of microbial colonies and DNA libraries are critical procedures that enable applications such as directed evolution, functional genomics, microbial identification, and creation of engineered microbial strains to produce high-value molecules. A promising chemical screening approach is the measurement of products directly from microbial colonies via optically guided matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). Measuring the compounds from microbial colonies bypasses liquid culture with a screen that takes approximately 5 s per sample. We describe a protocol combining a dedicated informatics pipeline and sample preparation method that can prepare up to 3,000 colonies in under 3 h. The screening protocol starts from colonies grown on Petri dishes and then transferred onto MALDI plates via imprinting. The target plate with the colonies is imaged by a flatbed scanner and the colonies are located via custom software. The target plate is coated with MALDI matrix, MALDI-MS analyzes the colony locations, and data analysis enables the determination of colonies with the desired biochemical properties. This workflow screens thousands of colonies per day without requiring additional automation. The wide chemical coverage and the high sensitivity of MALDI-MS enable diverse screening projects such as modifying enzymes and functional genomics surveys of gene activation/inhibition libraries.

Extracting the distribution amplitude of light pseudoscalar mesons using the HOPE method

The pseudoscalar meson light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) are essential non-perturbative inputs for a range of high-energy exclusive processes in quantum chromodynamics. In this proceedings, progress towards a determination of the low Mellin moments of the pion and kaon LCDAs by the HOPE Collaboration is reported.

Line Faults Classification Using Machine Learning on Three Phase Voltages Extracted from Large Dataset of PMU Measurements

An end-to-end supervised learning method is developed to classify transmission line faults in a twoyear field-recorded dataset that includes synchronized measurements of three-phase voltages recorded by 38 Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) sparsely located in in the US Western Grid interconnection. Statistical analysis is performed to extract features from this large dataset to train Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) classifiers initially. The training further leverages a simulated dataset from a synthetic grid with 12 PMUs to increase the number of faults of types infrequently seen in the field-recorded dataset. Training the classification models with the combined dataset resulted in a classification accuracy of 97.7%. This is a significant improvement over 89.7% to 92.5% accuracy obtained by relying on the field-recorded dataset alone.

Adjusting the pH of a pretreatment solution using carbon dioxide useful for integrating saccharification and fermentation

The present invention provides for a method of fermenting or saccharifying a biomass comprising: (a) (i) contacting a biomass comprising a polysaccharide, and an ionic liquid (IL) to form a first solution, or (ii) providing the first solution comprising the biomass and the IL, (b) contacting the first solution and carbon dioxide such that the first solution results in a lower pH, (c) introducing (i) an enzyme capable of enzymatically to breakdown at least one bond in the polysaccharide or a breakdown product of the polysaccharide, and/or (ii) a microorganism that capable of producing the enzyme and/or fermenting the polysaccharide or a breakdown product of the polysaccharide, such that the polysaccharide is at least partially broken down and the first solution is transformed into a second solution.
