Wildfire Smoke PM2.5 per Zipcode

This dataset contains daily aggregated measurements of daily PM2.5 from ambient wildfire smoke in the contiguous United States, spanning from 2006 to 2016. The data is sourced from a study by Childs et al. (2022), titled "Daily Local-Level Estimates of Ambient Wildfire Smoke PM2.5 for the Contiguous US" published in Environmental Science & Technology. To compute the standardized weight across different zip codes, we computed the weight calculation on a 10km grids. To compute the weight, we obtain area-weights that add up to 1 in each polygon of zipcodes. This enabled us to calculate the smoke values per zipcode for the aforementioned period. Those interested in replicating our data processing pipeline can access it at https://github.com/NSAPH-Data-Processing/smoke_aggregation.

Hybrid Analytics Solution for Power Plant Operations

Expert Microsystems, Inc., MapEx Software Inc. and XMPLR Energy LLC have teamed to submit a proposal to the US Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy to improve the efficiency, reliability and flexibility of existing coal-based power plants. The project, titled Hybrid Analytics Solution to Improve Coal Power Plant Operations (the “Hybrid Analytics” project), will develop, demonstrate and commercialize a novel approach that integrates two proven real-time monitoring techniques. The Hybrid Analytics approach integrates into a single, integrated solution: a) an established, advanced data-driven analytics solution that includes artificial intelligence, advanced pattern recognition and machine-learning techniques and b) a well-proven, first principle thermal heat balance model solution. The future role of coal plants will depend on the ability to cycle and follow loads to meet marginal power demands, accommodate renewables and support the grid. Essential to success in this new role is a plant’s ability to maintain high reliability, efficiency and flexibility. However, these changing operational demands put significant stresses on power plant components that directly impact the ability to deliver these requirements. In the past, plants have independently monitored performance using physics-based solutions (heat rate, boiler losses, etc.) and reliability using data-driven analytics (advanced pattern recognition). The Hybrid Analytics solution integrates both approaches to enhance fault detection, provide automated diagnostics and estimates of remaining time to act, and provide critical, enhanced and accurate real-time information to coal plant operators. As a result, coal plants can improve efficiency, reliability, and flexibility and can cost-effectively maintain their key role in the power delivery system.

Machine Learning for Gearbox Fault Prediction by Using Both Scada and Modeled Data

This presentation outlines the work in the paper titled "Prognostics of Wind Turbine Gearbox Bearing Failures Using SCADA and Modeled Data" published by the PHM Society and presented at its 2020 annual conference. It is accessible at https://papers.phmsociety.org/index.php/phmconf/article/download/1292/862. The technical work is on machine learning approaches for prognostics for gearbox faults. The methodology combines SCADA time series data and physics domain modeling data, derived from the models developed by the NREL team, as inputs to machine learning models to predict gearbox bearing failures with one month lead time. Based on SCADA data, modeled data, and bearing failure log data from an actual wind plant, the performances of different machine-learning models on unseen data are then evaluated using industry-standard metrics such as precision, recall, and F1 score, and AUC (area under receiver operating characteristic curve). Results show the overall system performance enhancement in predicting bearing failure when modeled data are included with SCADA data. The reduction in terms of false alarms is about 50%, and improvement in terms of precision, and F1 score, and AUC is about 33%, and 12%, and 6% respectively, based on the best modeling case in this study.

Pro2R: Procurement of Ramping Product and Regulation in CAISO Using Probabilistic Solar Power Forecasts

This presentation summarizes the objectives and findings from the project titled, "Pro2R: Coordinated Procurement of Ramping Product & Regulation in CAISO Using Probabilistic Solar Power Forecasts," funded by DOE SETO. The goal is to develop cutting edge probabilistic solar power forecasting methods, and integrate them into ISO market operations. The team has integrated in two ways: 1) to procure ramping product and regulation requirements (ancillary services) in the California ISO market, and 2) to develop an open source visitation and ramp alert related situational awareness using probabilistic forecasts. This deck also summarizes the results from the use of machine learning methods to relate probabilistic solar forecasts to the the needs for flexible ramp product in the California ISO system.

Geographic Mapping Tool for Power Systems

Power systems models are continuously updated to reflect changing infrastructure and modeling techniques. Open source geographic locations of power systems infrastructure do not include attributes that directly tie to electrical models. Moreover, relationships established between electric models and geospatial data sets do not apply to a future model because of nomenclature changes and architecture changes. The software titled “Geographic Mapping Tool for Power Systems” starts with a known set of locations, then runs multiple iterations to identify missing locations with a triangulation algorithm based on the branch connections and distances to the known locations.”

Efforts and Innovations to Promote Data Sharing and Data Accessibility in the EGS Collab Experiments

Large-scale scientific research programs such as the EGS Collab experiments and the FORGE program play extremely important roles in advancing geothermal technologies. Such efforts involve a large number of researchers from multiple institutions, last multiple years, and generate large, complex datasets. The value of the research efforts is only realized when the datasets are used by a large community of researchers in the decades to come. A challenge is that due to the complexity of the data, it could require a user to devote a serious effort into understanding the data before the data can be effectively utilized. In the EGS Collab experiments, the team has devoted remarkable efforts and developed many innovative solutions to make the data more accessible to broader team members and future users. This paper documents the experience gained and lessons learned by the EGS Collab team in disseminating the data in the most informative and inspiring forms to maximize the value of this precious dataset. "Accessibility"in the title does not only mean making the raw data available for download. Particularly, we want to emphasize the importance of organizing, annotating, and presenting the data in ways to make it easy to digest by prospective consumers of the data.
