Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Two-blade NACA 10-(3)(062)-045 Propeller and of a Two-blade NACA 10-(3)(08)-045 Propeller

Characteristics are given for the two-blade NACA 10-(3)(062)-045 propeller and for the two-blade NACA 10-(3)(08)-045 propeller over a range of advance ratio from 0.5 to 3.8, through a blade-angle range from 20 degrees to 55 degrees measured at the 0.75 radius. Maximum efficiencies of the order of 91.5 to 92 percent were obtained for the propellers. The propeller with the thinner airfoil sections over the outboard portion of the blades, the NACA 10-(3)(062)-045 propeller, had lower losses at high tip speeds, the difference amounting to about 5 percent at a helical tip Mach number of 1.10.

Pentopyranosyl Oligonucleotide Systems. Part 11: Systems with Shortened Backbones: D)-beta-Ribopyranosyl-(4 yields 3 )- and (L)-alpha - Lyxopyranosyl-(4 yields 3 )-oligonucleotides

The (L)-a-lyxopyranosyl-(4'yields 3')-oligonucleotide system-a member of a pentopyranosyl oligonucleotide family containing a shortened backbone-is capable of cooperative base-pairing and of cross-pairing with DNA and RNA. In contrast, corresponding (D)-beta-ribopyransoyl-(4' yields 3')-oligonucleotides do not show base-pairing under similar conditions. We conclude that oligonucleotide systems can violate the six-bonds-per-backbone-unit rule by having five bonds instead, if their vicinally bound phosphodiester bridges can assume an antiperiplanar conformation. An additional structural feature that seems relevant to the cross-pairing capability of the (L)-a-lyxopyranosyl-(4' yields 3')-oligonucleotide system is its (small) backbone/basepair axes inclination. An inclination which is similar to that in B-DNA seems to be a prerequisite for an oligonucleotide system s capability to cross-pair with DNA.

Oxadiazole-based Heterocycles as Building Block for Material Property Control: Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of 3,4-Bis(3-(4-nitro-1,2,5-oxadiazol-3-yl)- 1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)-1,2,5-oxadiazole (LLM-210)

This paper presents an approach to novel oxadiazole-based melt-castable energetic material, LLM-210. Used in pour-in process and 3D printing, melt-castable energetic materials (MCEM) must possess required physical and safety properties of industry-standard energetic materials, also a narrow range of melting point between 80-100 °C. Melting point is difficult to accurately predict, therefore, searching for MCEM is challenging. 3,4-Bis(5-(4-nitro-1,2,5-oxadiazol-3-yl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol3-yl)-1,2,5-oxadiazole (LLM-205), composed of five-oxadiazole rings allied via carbon-carbon bonds, was selected as new MCEM candidate. The target molecule was synthesized and characterized, showing a density of 1.807g/cm3 ; thermal decomposing temperature at 299 °C; and insensitive to external stimuli, but the melting point of 104 °C was out of the rang. Based on the molecular properties and ab initio calculations, 3,4-bis(3-(4-nitro-1,2,5-oxadiazol-3-yl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)- 1,2,5-oxadiazole (LLM-210), an isomer of LLM-205, was designed and synthesized from a different way. LLM-210 was characterized as MCEM, possessing melting point of 87 °C; density of 1.812 g/cm3 ; and exothermally decomposing temperature at 314 °C; being insensitive to external stimuli. In this study, the relationship of molecular structure to properties of LLM-205 and LLM-210 based on the results of Density Functional Theory (DFT) and X-ray crystallographic analysis is also briefly discussed.

Kinetics of simultaneous hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation reactions using CoMoP/Al 2 O 3 and NiMoP/Al 2 O 3

Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) is a key reaction to achieve diesel production at the specified low sulfur levels and is highly affected by a competing reaction involving nitrogen removal through hydrodenitrogenation (HDN). This work evaluated kinetic parameters of simultaneous reactions of HDS of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and HDN of quinoline (Q) using CoMoP/Al 2 O 3 and NiMoP/Al 2 O 3 catalysts under operational conditions that allow a wide range of reagent conversions. Estimated parameters were evaluated using rigorous statistical 2 analysis. Good fits for the evaluated experimental data were provided by both power-law and Langmuir-Hinshelwood models. Further, turnover frequency values highlight adsorption and competition effects between nitrogen-containing compounds and sulfur-containing compounds. NiMoP catalyst showed higher hydrogenating power than CoMoP, with larger absolute value of the estimated adsorption enthalpy (-120 kJ.mol -1 for NiMoP and -75 kJ.mol -1 for CoMoP), suggesting strong adsorption of nitrogen compounds. A catalyst with more hydrogenating power is also more capable of performing both HDN and HDS reactions simultaneously.

Benzo[$\mathcal{a}$]pyrene toxicokinetics in humans following dietary supplementation with 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) or Brussels sprouts

Utilizing the atto-zeptomole sensitivity of UPLC-accelerator mass spectrometry (UPLC-AMS), we previously demonstrated significant first-pass metabolism following escalating (25–250 ng) oral micro-dosing in humans of [ 14 C]-benzo[a]pyrene ([ 14 C]-BaP). The present study examines the potential for supplementation with Brussels sprouts (BS) or 3,3' -diindolylmethane (DIM) to alter plasma levels of [ 14 C]-BaP and metabolites over a 48-h period following micro-dosing with 50 ng (5.4 nCi) [ 14 C]-BaP. Volunteers were dosed with [ 14 C]-BaP following fourteen days on a cruciferous vegetable restricted diet, or the same diet supplemented for seven days with 50 g of BS or 300 mg of BR-DIM ® prior to dosing. BS or DIM reduced total [ 14 C] recovered from plasma by 56–67% relative to nonintervention. Dietary supplementation with DIM markedly increased T max and reduced C max for [ 14 C]-BaP indicative of slower absorption. Further, both dietary treatments significantly reduced C max values of four downstream BaP metabolites, consistent with delaying BaP absorption. Dietary treatments also appeared to reduce the T 1/2 and the plasma AUC( 0,$\infty$ ) for Unknown Metabolite C, indicating some effect in accelerating clearance of this metabolite. Toxicokinetic constants for other metabolites followed the pattern for [ 14 C]-BaP (metabolite profiles remained relatively consistent) and non-compartmental analysis did not indicate other significant alterations. Significant amounts of metabolites in plasma were at the bay region of [ 14 C]-BaP irrespective of treatment. Although the number of subjects and large interindividual variation are limitations of this study, it represents the first human trial showing dietary intervention altering toxicokinetics of a defined dose of a known human carcinogen.

Integration of proteomics and metabolomics into the Design, Build, Test, Learn cycle to improve 3-hydroxypropionic acid production in Aspergillus pseudoterreus

Biological engineering of microorganisms to produce value-added chemicals is a promising route to sustainable manufacturing. However, overproduction of metabolic intermediates at high titer, rate, and yield from inexpensive substrates is challenging in non-model systems where limited information is available regarding metabolic flux and its control in production conditions. Integrated multi-omic analyses of engineered strains offers an in-depth look at metabolites and proteins directly involved in growth and production of target and non-target bioproducts. Here we applied multi-omic analyses to overproduction of the polymer precursor 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3HP) in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus pseudoterreus. A synthetic pathway consisting of aspartate decarboxylase, beta-alanine pyruvate transaminase, and 3HP dehydrogenase was designed and built for A. pseudoterreus. Strains with single- and multi-copy integration events were isolated and multi-omics analysis consisting of intracellular and extracellular metabolomics and targeted and global proteomics was used to interrogate the strains in shake-flask and bioreactor conditions. Production of a variety of co-products (organic acids and glycerol) and oxidative degradation of 3HP were identified as metabolic pathways competing with 3HP production. Intracellular accumulation of nitrogen as 2,4-diaminobutanoate was identified as an off-target nitrogen sink that may also limit flux through the engineered 3HP pathway. Elimination of the high-expression oxidative 3HP degradation pathway by deletion of a putative malonate semialdehyde dehydrogenase improved the yield of 3HP by 3.4× after 10 days in shake-flask culture. This is the first report of 3HP production in a filamentous fungus amenable to industrial scale biomanufacturing of organic acids at high titer and low pH.

Gas–Phase Synthesis of 3–Vinylcyclopropene via the Crossed Beam Reaction of the Methylidyne Radical (CH; X 2 Π) with 1,3–Butadiene (CH 2 CHCHCH 2 ; X 1 Ag)

The crossed molecular beam reactions of the methylidyne radical (CH; X 2 Π) with 1,3-butadiene (CH 2 CHCHCH 2 ; X 1 Ag) along with their (partially) deuterated counterparts were performed at collision energies of 20.8 kJ mol -1 under single collision conditions. Combining our laboratory data with ab initio calculations, we reveal that the methylidyne radical may add barrierlessly to the terminal carbon atom and/or carbon-carbon double bond of 1,3-butadiene, leading to doublet C 5 H 7 intermediates with life times longer than the rotation periods. Furthermore, these collision complexes undergo non-statistical unimolecular decomposition through hydrogen atom emission yielding the cyclic cis- and trans-3-vinyl-cyclopropene products with reaction exoergicities of 119±42 kJ mol -1 . Since this reaction is barrierless, exoergic, and all transition states are located below the energy of the separated reactants, these cyclic C 5 H 6 products are predicted to be accessed even in low-temperature environments, such as in hydrocarbon-rich atmospheres of planets and cold molecular clouds such as TMC-1.

Boosting the cycling stability of Ni-rich layered oxide cathode by dry coating of ultrastable Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 nanoparticles

Nickel (Ni)-rich layered oxides such as LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM622) represent one of the most promising candidates for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the pristine Ni-rich cathode materials usually suffer from poor structural stability during cycling. In this work, we demonstrate a simple but effective approach to improve the cycling stability of the NCM622 cathode by dry coating of ultrastable Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 -carbon (LVP-C) nanoparticles, which leads to a robust composite cathode (NCM622/LVP-C) without sacrificing the specific energy density compared with pristine NCM622. The optimal NCM622/LVP-C composite presents a high specific capacity of 162 mA h g -1 at 0.5 C and excellent cycling performance with 85.0% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 2 C, higher than that of the pristine NCM622 (67.6%). Systematic characterization confirms that the LVP-C protective layer can effectively reduce the side reactions, restrict the cation mixing of NCM622 and improve its structural stability. Moreover, the NCM622/LVP-C||graphite full cells also show a commercial-level capacity of 3.2 mA h cm -2 and much improved cycling stability compared with NCM622/LVP-C||graphite full cells, indicating the great promise for low-cost, high-capacity and long-life LIBs.

Interferometric bunch length measurements of 3 MeV picocoulomb electron beams

We report picosecond bunch length measurements using an interferometric method for a 3 MeV electron beam having bunch charge ranging from 1 to 14 pC. The method senses the single-cycle sub-terahertz (THz) pulse emitted by each electron bunch as coherent transition radiation which, in turn, is analyzed using a Michelson-type interferometer, forming an interferogram that is then processed to yield the nominal electron bunch length. This sub-THz coherent radiation intensity was measured using a quasi-optical detector (QOD) operated at room temperature. This experiment was quite challenging since the divergence angle of the sub-THz pulse emitted by the low-energy electron bunch exceeds ±10°, and its pulse energy at the entrance to the detector was as low as 100 pJ. When compared to a conventional helium-cooled silicon composite bolometer designed for frequencies above 0.5 THz, the QOD provided much better signal-to-noise ratio in the ~80 GHz frequency range, which was critical for the successful measurement of the bunch length.

Slow spin dynamics in the hyperhoneycomb lattice [ ( C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH ] 2 Cu 2 ( C 2 O 4 ) 3 revealed by H 1 NMR studies

We report the results of magnetic susceptibility χ and H 1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on a three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb lattice compound [ ( C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH ] 2 Cu 2 ( C 2 O 4 ) 3 (CCCO). The average value of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling between the Cu 2 + ( S = 1 / 2 ) spins was determined to be J ~ 50 K from the χ measurements. No long-range magnetic ordering has been observed down to T = 50 mK, although NMR lines become slightly broader at low temperatures below 1 K. The broadening of the NMR spectrum observed below 1 K reveals that the Cu spin moments remain at this temperature, suggesting a non-spin-singlet ground state. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of 1 / T 1 at temperatures above 20 K is well explained by paramagnetic thermal spin fluctuations where the fluctuation frequency of Cu 2 + spins is higher than the NMR frequency of the order of megahertz. However, a clear signature of the slowing down of the Cu 2 + spin fluctuations was observed at low temperatures where 1 / T 1 shows a thermally activated behavior. The magnetic field dependence of the magnitude of the spin excitation gap suggests that the magnetic behaviors of CCCO are characterized as an AFM chain at low temperatures.

Engineering Relaxor Behavior in (BaTiO 3 ) n /(SrTiO 3 ) n Superlattices

Complex-oxide superlattices provide a pathway to numerous emergent phenomena because of the juxtaposition of disparate properties and the strong interfacial interactions in these unit-cell-precise structures. This is particularly true in superlattices of ferroelectric and dielectric materials, wherein new forms of ferroelectricity, exotic dipolar textures, and distinctive domain structures can be produced. Here, in this study, relaxor-like behavior, typically associated with the chemical inhomogeneity and complexity of solid solutions, is observed in (BaTiO 3 ) n /(SrTiO 3 ) n (n = 4–20 unit cells) superlattices. Dielectric studies and subsequent Vogel–Fulcher analysis show significant frequency dispersion of the dielectric maximum across a range of periodicities, with enhanced dielectric constant and more robust relaxor behavior for smaller period n. Bond-valence molecular-dynamics simulations predict the relaxor-like behavior observed experimentally, and interpretations of the polar patterns via 2D discrete-wavelet transforms in shorter-period superlattices suggest that the relaxor behavior arises from shape variations of the dipolar configurations, in contrast to frozen antipolar stripe domains in longer-period superlattices (n = 16). Moreover, the size and shape of the dipolar configurations are tuned by superlattice periodicity, thus providing a definitive design strategy to use superlattice layering to create relaxor-like behavior which may expand the ability to control desired properties in these complex systems.

The Role of Interfacial Interactions and Oxygen Vacancies in Tuning Magnetic Anisotropy in LaCrO 3 /LaMnO 3 Heterostructures

The interplay of lattice, electronic, and spin degrees of freedom at epitaxial complex oxide interfaces provides a route to tune their magnetic ground states. Unraveling the competing contributions is critical for tuning their functional properties. The relationship between magnetic ordering and magnetic anisotropy and the lattice symmetry, oxygen content, and film thickness in compressively strained LaMnO 3 (LMO)/LaCrO 3 (LCO) superlattices is investigated. Mn–O–Cr antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions across the heterointerface result in a net ferrimagnetic magnetic structure. Bulk magnetometry measurements reveal isotropic in-plane magnetism for as-grown oxygen-deficient thin samples due to equal fractions of orthorhombic a+a-c-, and a-a+c- twin domains. As the superlattice thickness is increased, in-plane magnetic anisotropy emerges as the fraction of the a+a-c- domain increases. On annealing in oxygen, the suppression of oxygen vacancies results in a contraction of the lattice volume, and an orthorhombic to rhombohedral transition leads to isotropic magnetism independent of the film thickness. The complex interactions are investigated using high-resolution synchrotron diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. These results highlight the role of the evolution of structural domains with film thickness, interfacial spin interactions, and oxygen-vacancy-induced structural phase transitions in tuning the magnetic properties of complex oxide heterostructures.
