An array processing system for lunar geochemical and geophysical data

A computerized array processing system has been developed to reduce, analyze, display, and correlate a large number of orbital and earth-based geochemical, geophysical, and geological measurements of the moon on a global scale. The system supports the activities of a consortium of about 30 lunar scientists involved in data synthesis studies. The system was modeled after standard digital image-processing techniques but differs in that processing is performed with floating point precision rather than integer precision. Because of flexibility in floating-point image processing, a series of techniques that are impossible or cumbersome in conventional integer processing were developed to perform optimum interpolation and smoothing of data. Recently color maps of about 25 lunar geophysical and geochemical variables have been generated.

Coal conversion products industrial applications

Coal-based synthetic fuels complexes under development consideration by NASA/MSFC will produce large quantities of synthetic fuels, primarily medium BTU gas, which could be sold commercially to industries located in South Central Tennessee and Northern Alabama. The complexes would be modular in construction, and subsequent modules may produce liquid fuels or fuels for electric power production. Current and projected industries in the two states which have a propensity for utilizing coal-based synthetic fuels were identified, and a data base was compiled to support MFSC activities.

Science and Applications Space Platforms - A NASA overview

An overview of past, present, and future activities relating to space platforms is presented, with emphasis placed on implementation of the initial platform. It is noted that the challenge at present is to define an initial system that can accommodate high priority science, that possesses the capability of doing multi-discipline science, and that demonstrates on-orbit servicing and payload exchange through use of the Shuttle. The evolution of the Science and Applications Space Platform (SASP), which will provide significantly more time on-orbit for instrument operations without increasing Space Shuttle orbiter time on-orbit, is traced. The importance of completing all required activities to support a new start for the SASP in fiscal year 1983 is stressed. While the initial SASP will support only a limited set of investigations, the program will evolve by replication, upgrading, or the development of new systems to support a broader and generally more demanding set of system requirements.

The application of simulation modeling to the cost and performance ranking of solar thermal power plants

Small solar thermal power systems (up to 10 MWe in size) were tested. The solar thermal power plant ranking study was performed to aid in experiment activity and support decisions for the selection of the most appropriate technological approach. The cost and performance were determined for insolation conditions by utilizing the Solar Energy Simulation computer code (SESII). This model optimizes the size of the collector field and energy storage subsystem for given engine generator and energy transport characteristics. The development of the simulation tool, its operation, and the results achieved from the analysis are discussed.

LANDSAT-D ground segment operations plan, revision A

The basic concept for the utilization of LANDSAT ground processing resources is described. Only the steady state activities that support normal ground processing are addressed. This ground segment operations plan covers all processing of the multispectral scanner and the processing of thematic mapper through data acquisition and payload correction data generation for the LANDSAT 4 mission. The capabilities embedded in the hardware and software elements are presented from an operations viewpoint. The personnel assignments associated with each functional process and the mechanisms available for controlling the overall data flow are identified.

The Network Information Management System (NIMS) in the Deep Space Network

In an effort to better manage enormous amounts of administrative, engineering, and management data that is distributed worldwide, a study was conducted which identified the need for a network support system. The Network Information Management System (NIMS) will provide the Deep Space Network with the tools to provide an easily accessible source of valid information to support management activities and provide a more cost-effective method of acquiring, maintaining, and retrieval data.

Study of LANDSAT-D thematic mapper performance as applied to hydrocarbon exploration

Activities in support of thematic mapper "A'-tape analysis, field work in the Cement-Velma, Oklahoma areas, and continued interpretation and assessment of imagery of various test sites are reported. The objectives of the A-tape analysis are: (1) to examine the radiometric loss of data quality introduced by resampling to P-tape format; (2) to seek a better distriping of the image by replacing the NASA matching of radiometry to on-board calibration data with an EarthSat matching of the histograms for each of the sixteen detectors, processing separately for forward and backward scanner sweeps; and (3) to produce an image with improved appearance and improved radiometeric qualities.

Causes of the triglyceride-lowering effect of exercise training in rats

Studies conducted with human subjects and laboratory animals have consistently shown a reduction in serum triglyceride (TG) in exercise-trained subjects. The obtained data have suggested that this decrease was due to a reduction in hepatic TG secretion. The present investigation, which was conducted with rats trained to attain a high level of spontaneous running activity, provides support for the earlier results. In addition, insights are obtained regarding the mechanism by which exercise lowers TG levels. Since the liver accounts for the vast majority of endogenous very low density lipoprotein (VLDL)-TG secretion, the fall in TG secretion rate seen in exercise-trained (ET) rats must be due to a reduction in hepatic TG secretion.

Extended atmospheres of outer planet satellites and comets

An analysis of the extended atmospheres of outer planet satellites and comets is made. Primary emphasis is placed on cometary atmospheres because of the return of Comet P/Halley. As part of a collaborative effort with A.I.F. Stewart, observations of the hydrogen coma of Comet P/Giacobini-Zinner obtained from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter ultraviolet spectrometer (PVOUVS) were successfully analyzed at AER and are reported. In addition, significant pre-modeling and post-modeling activities to support and analyze the PVOUVS observations of Comet P/Halley successfully acquired in late 1985 and early 1986 are also discussed. Progress in model preparation for third-year analysis of the Voyager UVS Lyman-alpha brightness distribution emitted by hydrogen atoms in the Saturn system is also summarized.

Geometric description and grid generation for space vehicles

The understanding and analysis of three dimensional fluid behavior around reentry vehicles, like the Space Shuttle Orbiter, is of considerable importance for flight applications. Vehicle designers need pressure, heat transfer, and shear distributions to support design activities. Traditionally these have been obtained by experimental data. Significant reduction in design costs can be obtained if the calculated results based on finite difference procedures are used to verify and supplement experimental results. Computing the flow field over Space Shuttle Orbiter, which has complex cross sectional geometries is a major problem. A first step in this direction is development of body definition and grid generation procedure. In this project a digitized body definition and grid generation procedure, developed earlier at JSC, is modified and applied to the Shuttle Orbiter X24C-10D. Two dimensional grid and body definition for various sections of the space vehicle is obtained using the differential equation method. This study demonstrates that this geometry and grid generation procedure can be applied to other aerospace vehicles such as aerospaceplanes.
