Two-stage reflective self-seeding scheme for high-repetition-rate X-ray free-electron lasers

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) open a new era of X-ray based research by generating extremely intense X-ray flashes. To further improve the spectrum brightness, a self-seeding FEL scheme has been developed and demonstrated experimentally. As the next step, new-generation FELs with high repetition rates are being designed, built and commissioned around the world. A high repetition rate would significantly speed up the scientific research; however, alongside this improvement comes new challenges surrounding thermal management of the self-seeding monochromator. Here, a new configuration for self-seeding FELs is proposed, operated under a high repetition rate which can strongly suppress the thermal effects on the monochromator and provides a narrow-bandwidth FEL pulse. Three-dimension time-dependent simulations have been performed to demonstrate this idea. Finally, with this proposed configuration, high-repetition-rate XFEL facilities are able to generate narrow-bandwidth X-ray pulses without obvious thermal concern on the monochromators.

Grid-forming Control of Single- and Two-Stage Solar PV Systems with Mode Transition

Legacy power systems once dominated by con-ventional synchronous machines are transitioning into systems driven by fast-acting power-electronic converters that integrate renewable resources. The majority of integrated renewables such as PV and wind bring down system inertia and can cause stability issues due to their volatile nature. The state-of-the-art grid-forming (GFM) control is proven to enhance system inertia and stability in low-inertia systems. However, most of the existing GFM inverters are applied for battery systems, which are much more expensive than PV. Motivated by this, in this paper we propose a holistic grid-forming (GFM) control strategy for PV systems without the need of energy storage. The proposed strategy is developed on the secondary level of the grid-forming control that enables the PV inverter to operate smoothly among islanded, synchronization, GFM, and limited grid-forming (LGF) modes. The practical criteria for determining the operation modes are established and implemented based on the grid operation scenarios. Here, the proposed design is successfully validated by case studies with a laboratory prototype using Siemens Software Defined Inverters.

Urban-Scale Control of School Bus Fleet Charging and Discharging Strategies Using Single and Multi-Stage Optimization

This paper presents a dual-strategy approach to optimizing charging and discharging schedules for school bus fleets, using the limited charging infrastructure effectively. We aim to ensure that each bus is fully charged for daily operations and aids in grid stability during peak demand. The first strategy utilizes linear programming to schedule overnight charging at available station sockets and strategic discharging during peak periods, efficiently coordinating limited resources. The second strategy employs metaheuristic techniques for continuous optimization, focusing on precise power requirements and offering greater flexibility than the linear model.

Giving Research Software Engineers a Larger Stage Through the Better Scientific Software Fellowship

The Better Scientific Software Fellowship (BSSwF) was launched in 2018 to foster and promote practices, processes, and tools to improve developer productivity and software sustainability of scientific codes. The BSSwF’s vision is to grow the community with practitioners, leaders, mentors, and consultants to increase the visibility of scientific software. Over the last five years, many fellowship recipients and honorable mentions have identified as research software engineers (RSEs). Furthermore, case studies from several of the program’s participants illustrate the diverse ways the BSSwF has benefited both the RSE and scientific communities. In an environment where the contributions of RSEs are too often undervalued, we believe that programs such as the BSSwF can help recognize and encourage community members to step outside of their regular commitments and expand on their work, collaborations, and ideas for a larger audience.

Scenario Creation and Power-Conditioning Strategies for Operating Power Grids with Two-Stage Stochastic Economic Dispatch

A significant difficulty associated with the use of stochastic programming to solve optimal power flow problems on a 5-minute timescale is the quality of renewable energy scenarios input by the user. This is especially true when considering power systems with high penetrations of renewable energy, e.g. wind power. This paper introduces the use of stochastic programming to solve the DC optimal power flow problem with scenarios drawn directly from high-fidelity data sets. Hence, the proposed method avoids the problem of lost physics by finding high-fidelity analogs that can describe future states of the system. Furthermore, this method can be simply extended to output multi-period scenarios to the stochastic program. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique by simulating dispatch operations on a synthetic test system over the course of a week.
