Verification of Adaptive Protection in Hardware in the Loop for Coordination with Solar Variability

As inverter-based resources continue to be installed at all levels of the electric grid, the fixed protection schemes used at the distribution level will continue to be stressed until they no longer ensure the protection of the grid. Adaptive protection has been proposed as a solution with the ability to update the protection schemes in near real-time to ensure reliability and increase the resilience of the grid. However, weather variability poses a significant challenge to the ability of these methods to keep the selectivity and reliability of these schemes coordinated. If the ramp rates, due to solar variability, of the inverter-based resources change faster than the adaptive protection can issue new settings, the protection system could be uncoordinated, with the wrong device responding to a system fault. The proposed adaptive protection method ensures that due to solar variability, communication, and protection calculation latency, it can issu e coordinated protection settings promptly, in one minute or less. The hardware-in-the-loop results show the protection settings being issued and maintaining system coordination in under a minute.

A Boundary Element Model for Assessing Large‐Scale Pressurization in Faulted Geological Storage Systems

Assessing large-scale pressurization at the regional scale—a possible outcome of large subsurface storage applications such as wastewater injection and geological carbon sequestration—presents significant computational challenges. These challenges are particularly pronounced when accounting for complex geologic structures with multiple reservoir and caprock layers, fault zones, and wells. This study introduces a computationally efficient model that integrates single-phase semi-analytical solutions with a boundary element (BE) approach. The model simulates pressure propagation in multilayered 3D systems, including vertical faults, caprock, basement, and confining units. We apply this new model to a representative scenario involving CO 2 injection near a partially sealing fault with verification against an independent two-phase flow model. Results demonstrate that our model accurately captures far-field pressure responses and that, outside the CO 2 plume zone, pressure predictions from single-phase and two-phase models are nearly identical. This supports the use of single-phase models like ours for efficient estimation of far-field pressure changes. Additionally, we demonstrate its effectiveness at a large scale, incorporating multiple wells and faults. With its ability to represent multiple wells, fault zones, and geological heterogeneity, our model is well suited for assessments of basin-scale pressurization. Its computational efficiency also makes it a promising tool for integration with optimization frameworks aimed at designing and managing injection strategies in faulted storage systems.

DAKOTA (Design Analysis Kit for Optimization and Terascale) v.6.14

Sandia's Dakota software supports science and engineering transformation through advanced exploration of simulations. Specifically, Dakota manages and analyzes ensembles of simulations to provide broader and deeper perspective for analysts and decision makers. This enables them to: (1) enhance understanding of risk, (2) improve products, and (3) assess simulation credibility. In its simplest mode, Dakota can automate typical parameter variation studies through a generic interface to a computational model. Dakota also delivers advanced parametric analysis techniques enabling design exploration, optimization, model calibration, risk analysis, and quantification of margins and uncertainty with such models. It directly supports verification and validation activities. The algorithms implemented in Dakota aim to address challenges in performing these analyses with complex science and engineering models from desktop to high performance computers. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525 SAND2021-10468 O

Evaluation of 3D Simulation Capabilities within xRAGE using a Suite of Test Problems

This presentation describes a 3D verification and validation suite for xRAGE. Three verification test problems for hydrodynamics are presented: the Kidder ball problem, the Verney shell problem, and a 5-material compression problem. There is excellent agreement between 2D and 3D XRAGE simulation results for these problems, and between the xRAGE results and the benchmark solutions. In addition, two 3D ICF test problems are presented, based on an OMEGA direct drive capsule experiment, and on a NIF indirect drive capsule experiment. These two ICF test problems are used to evaluate two hydrodynamic methods within xRAGE. In addition to hydrodynamics the simulations also include three temperature plasma physics, thermal conduction and radiation diffusion. When simulating either capsule in 3D the newer unsplit hydrodynamic method in xRAGE produces more vorticity relative to the older default method. For the indirect drive capsule the 3D simulations are in reasonable agreement with the experimental values of ion temperature and neutron production. Unstable 3D vortex rings are present near the DT ice/carbon interface which enhance the confinement of the DT ice.

This report documents the software testing which has been performed for the PARET/ANL version 7.7 software. The software testing is based on code capabilities identified by research reactor analysts as frequently used in their safety analyses. The verification and validation procedures have been performed and documented to address the steady-state capabilities of the software, as described in Chapter 2, and the transient capabilities, as described in Chapter 3. Testing based on the comparison between PARET/ANL calculations and analytical solutions, hand calculations, or other code calculations of the test cases confirms that all the identified capabilities of the software were implemented correctly. In addition, results from code comparisons against SPERT-I and SPERT-IV experiments for various flow rates are reported for the peak power, energy release and cladding surface temperature. The comparisons showed overall good agreement for the peak power and conservative predictions of the cladding surface temperature

Low cost solar array project. Cell and module formation research area. Process research of non-CZ silicon material

Liquid diffusion masks and liquid dopants to replace the more expensive CVD SiO2 mask and gaseous diffusion processes were investigated. Silicon pellets were prepared in the silicon shot tower; and solar cells were fabricated using web grown where the pellets were used as a replenishment material. Verification runs were made using the boron dopant and liquid diffusion mask materials. The average of cells produced in these runs was 13%. The relationship of sheet resistivity, temperature, gas flows, and gas composition for the diffusion of the P-8 liquid phosphorus solution was investigated. Solar cells processed from web grown from Si shot material were evaluated, and results qualified the use of the material produced in the shot tower for web furnace feed stock.
