Observations of NGC 604 over six decades in frequency

Maps in the near-infrared, H-alpha and radio continuum have been obtained of NGC 604, the brightest H II region complex in M33, as well as a measurement of the UV spectrum of the ionizing star cluster. The data show that NGC 604 consists of about ten components of typical size 10 pc, embedded in a much larger envelope with dimensions of 225 pc. At least one component is optically almost completely obscured; it is located close to another object that is only detected in the near-infrared and whose nature is uncertain.

IUE low-dispersion spectra of six luminous stars in symmetric nebulae

The stars and nebulae are HD 156738 and HDE 319703A, respectively centered in a pair of symmetric nebulae among the NGC 6334 group, AG Car in its nebula, HDE 250550 in nebula 8 of a catalog by Herbig, 209 BAC in Ml-67, and HD 89358 in NGC 3199. These include two O stars, two WN stars, an unstable B supergiant, and a ZAMS B star. Four of them are additions to a previous similar study, and the information about AG CAR and 209 BAC/Ml-67 is extended from that study. The objects are interpreted with Weaver et al.'s (1977) theory of the interaction of a stellar wind with the ambient interstellar medium, except where the short lifetime of the HDE 250550 nebula has forestalled such analysis. Spectral line identifications and types, and several parameters of mass loss, are tabulated. When the present mass loss rates are compared with previous results from other methods, there is an outstanding difference only for WN stars, since 1-3 x 10 to the -7th solar masses/year is derived here.

In Flight Performance of a Six Ampere-hour Nickel-cadmium Battery in Low Earth Orbit

Flight data for 17,000 orbital cycles are reviewed and summarized. The nickel cadmium battery system operated without failure or abnormality. Battery trend analysis used in determining the feasibility of extending mission life is discussed. The life test data for 20% depth of discharge indicates design life requirements would be reached even at a deeper depth of discharge.

The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE): Six years in orbit

Spacecraft and scientific instrument status of the International Ultraviolet Explorer mission at 6 yr in orbit is discussed. The satellite has been in continuous operations since January 26, 1978 and continues to support science operations normally and effectively in its 7 th year of successful in-orbit operation. Sapcecraft and scientific instrument design requirements and goals are met. Design lifetime of the hardware is 3 yr with a goal, including the sizing of consumables and degradable hardware, of 5 yr.

Preliminary scientific results from the first six months of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS)

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) was successfully launched on January 25, 1983. This paper presents results based on analysis of early scientific data returned from IRAS. Among the early results of IRAS are the discovery of comet IRAS-Araki-Alcock, evidence for a shell of large particles around the nearby bright star Vega, detection of stars in the process of formation, and detection of many infrared bright galaxies. These early results demonstrate that the IRAS data will be a treasure chest for astronomers for years to come.

Diameters and albedos of thirty-six asteroids

Radiometric diameters and albedos of 36 asteroids, most previously unmeasured by this technique, are reported. These objects were selected primarily to resolve taxonomic ambiguities resulting from the lack of albedo information. Of the sample of 36, most are of the common types C, S, and M, but also represented are types A, D, F, and P. One object, 214 Aschera, is of the rare E type (only the fourth of its kind known); 87 Sylvia is the largest known member of the P class. Albedo and Arizona eight-color data from Tholen (1983) indicate that 336 Lacadiera is of type D, one of the few members of this class found in the main asteroid belt and a prime candidate for future space missions.

Preliminary scientific results from the first six months of the infrared astronomy satellite (IRAS)

The Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) was successfully launched on 25 January 1983. The goals of this joint U.S., Dutch, and British project were twofold. The first, and most important, goal was to perform an unbiased all-sky survey at wavelengths of 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns to establish the importance of infrared emission in the energy balance of the universe, to map the diffuse emission from the Galaxy and the material in the solar system, and to obtain low resolution spectra of the brightest sources identified at 12 and 25 microns. A second mission objective was to study specific known astronomical objects in more detail to gain higher sensitivity or higher spatial resolution than that achievable by normal survey observations. The satellite is now seven months into its one year mission life, and survey operations are exceeding prelaunch expectations. The initial all-sky survey was completed on 26 August 1983. In the last four months of the mission a second all-sky survey will be conducted to enhance the survey completeness. A previous paper in the proceedings of this conference (Low et al., 1983) has described the design and performance of the satellite. In this paper a description is provided of some of the early scientific results from the IRAS mission.

Detection of Ni 2 lambda 7378 in six Seyfert galaxies

A line due to Ni 2 7378 in the Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068, 2110, 3227, 4151, 5506, and Arp 102 B was detected. The average Ni abundance is about 2 times solar, which is 5 times less than in the filaments of the Crab Nebula. This argues for nucleosynthetic processing in the latter. The Ni 2 line is spatially revolved in NGC 1068, and shows at least a factor of 4 enhancement in the Ni abundance away from the nucleus. The off-nuclear abundance of Ni in NGC 1068 approaches that of the Crab, which strongly suggests that type supernovae enriched the off-nuclear gas clouds.

Display comparison for six-degree-of-freedom force/torque control

The experimental design and the results of a study of a force and torque sensing and display (FTSD) system, developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, are presented. The FTSD system was incorporated into the one-g version of the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (RMS). The tests consisted of evaluating alternative graphics formats for presenting force and torque information at the RMS work station, and of testing the utility of the sensor and the display system as an aid to specific RMS tasks. The participating subjects were all trained RMS operators with experience on the one-g version of the system, three of them with previous experience using the Space Shuttle RMS on orbit. The results support the use of the FTSD system as an aid to RMS operations: the system was found to facilitate the control of forces when the RMS is under partially or wholly constrained conditions. The graphics format employed in the present version of the FTSD system was found to be superior to earlier formats.

Drop testing and analysis of six-foot diameter graphite-epoxy frames

Graphite-epoxy frames were drop tested onto a concrete floor to simulate crash loadings. The frames have Z-shaped cross-sections typical of designs often proposed for fuselage structure of advanced composite transports. The 6-foot diameter of the frames was chosen to reduce specimen fabrication costs and to facilitate testing. Response of the frames from accelerometer, strain gage, and photographic measurements are presented which characterize the behavior under 25-30 fps vertical impact velocity onto concrete. Failure of the graphite-epoxy frames involved a complete separation through the cross section near the impact point. All damage to the composite frame was confined to an area close to the impact point. Failure of aluminum frames tested for comparison were different from the composite specimens. The aluminum frames yielded (plastic hinges formed) at several locations around the lower portion of the frame without failing completely across the section.

The flight and impact dispersion of the Comet Nucleus Penetrator - A six-degree-of-freedom simulation

The flight dynamics of a Penetrator probe which, as part of a Comet Rendezvous and Asteroid Flyby mission will impact a known periodic comet, possibly Hempel 2, and penetrate beneath the surface to obtain measurements, is discussed. The mission is described, including the penetrator-separation dynamics, the dynamics during initial coast and rocket thrust phase, and the final coast to impact. The effects on the results that may be caused by the comet nucleus gravity field variations, uncertainty in the spacecraft state vector, the spacecraft pointing accuracy, initial separation errors, and rocket motor thrust errors are examined.

The six year Nimbus-7 Earth Radiation Budget data set

Correlative statistics gathered during the first 6 yr of operation of the Nimbus-7 ERB instrumentation are presented and discussed. The numerical model employed for calculating the net radiation from data collected by wide and narrow field of view scanners is reviewed, along with the scanning patterns and specific data collection scenarios encountered with the remote sensing system. Seasonal and regional discrepancies between the ERB and polar-orbiting NOAA satellite data for average differences between zonal temperatures are noted.

Six micrometer period wide-gap permalloy magnetic bubble devices

This report describes the progress made toward the goal of developing a 1 Mbit bubble memory chip, based on a 6 micron period wide-gap permalloy technology. Characterization of the functions showed that the guard-rail, generator, swap, write-line, read-line and after several revisions, the replicator and the expander-detector performed acceptably in preliminary testing. Several investigations were initiated to solve the problem of low minor loop yield. A dual-spacing process, which allows the minor loop propagation elements to be more tightly coupled to the garnet film was developed. Several new propagate structures, intended to be more tolerant of small defects were also conceived.
