Optical Sensors Using Stimulated Brillouin Scattering

A method for enhancing a sensitivity of an optical sensor having an optical cavity counter-propagates beams of pump light within the optical cavity to produce scattered light based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). The properties of the pump light are selected to generate fast-light conditions for the scattered light, such that the scattered light includes counter-propagating beams of fast light. The method prevents the pump light from resonating within the optical cavity, while allowing the scattered light to resonate within the optical cavity. At least portions of the scattered light are interfered outside of the optical cavity to produce a beat note for a measurement of the optical sensor. The disclosed method is particularly applicable to optical gyroscopes.

Aerojet Engineering Corporation: Stimulation and Creation, 1935-1942

There are multiple published accounts of the stimulation and creation of the Aerojet Engineering Corporation that are inconsistent, incomplete, or erroneous in significant details, describing principals involved, timing, and funding of the creation process. This paper corrects the record and offers a well-documented and reliable history of the creation of the Aerojet Engineering Corporation. A small group of academic researchers and technicians, joined by an attorney, working at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), accomplished the formation and creation of the corporation. The group of six men incorporated and served as initial officers of the Aerojet Engineering Corporation—Dr. Theodore von Karman; Dr. Frank Malina; Dr. Martin Summerfield; John Parsons; Edward Forman; and a Washington, DC, attorney, Andrew Haley. A government-funded program definition study at Caltech generated a proposal to produce a means of providing superior aircraft performance capabilities using rocketry, often referred to as jet propulsion, due to engineering disrepute of “rocketry" prior to WWII. Caltech successfully conducted flight demonstrations at March Field (Riverside, California) in the summer of 1941, leading Drs. von Karman and Malina to discuss and explore the best method to provide for production of jet-assisted takeoff (JATO) rockets with established industrial leaders, as well as industrial organizational alternatives. Von Karman, Malina, Summerfield, Parsons, and Forman continued these discussions until von Karman decided, in early 1942, to solicit the legal advice of Andrew Haley on how to proceed. After meetings at von Karman's home in Pasadena, on Haley's recommendation and using his volunteered initial corporate funding, it was agreed to incorporate the group. Articles of incorporation were drawn up by Haley and on 19 March 1942 were formally filed with the Delaware Secretary of State, establishing the Aerojet Engineering Corporation. Many accounts previously published have distorted or misreported many of the details of the process followed by the group that created the company. It is intended that this paper will be regarded as a fully researched historical account of the creation of the Aerojet Engineering Corporation. Included are the historical environment, the industrial motivations, descriptions of key players, the role of government, and the ultimate confluence of these factors with the motivation of a champion and the availability of the required resources.

System and method for stimulated emission depletion projection stereolithography

The present disclosure relates to a system for forming a three dimensional (3D) part. The system may incorporate a beam delivery subsystem for generating optical signals, and a mask subsystem that receives the optical signals and generates optical images therefrom. A first one of the optical images activates a polymerization species of a photo-sensitive resin in accordance with illuminated areas thereof, to thus cause polymerization of select portions of the photo-sensitive resin to help form a layer of the 3D part. A second one of the optical images causes stimulated emission depletion of subportions of the polymerization species, simultaneously, over various areas of the layer, to enhance resolution of at least one subportion of the select portions of the photo-sensitive resin.

Developing a Transferable Framework for CO2-Stimulated Geothermal Energy Enhancement: A Case Study

This is the conference paper accompanying a poster presentation at the 17th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies GHGT-17 held in Calgary, Canada, October 20-24, 2024. In this paper, we present innovative technologies to image key features, including CO₂-stimulated fracture imaging, CO₂ fluid sweep imaging and heat transfer and exchange imaging by leveraging multiple datasets and applying advanced AI/ML, multi-level data analytics, and data/information fusion to better understand the geothermal reservoir for enhanced recovery.

Utah FORGE: Well 16A(78)-32 and 16B(78)-32 Stimulation Production Logging Tests

These are production logging tests (PLT) results from Halliburton collected during the nine hour circulation test performed at Utah FORGE on April 27th, 2024. The circulation test involved injecting into well 16A(78)-32 and producing out of well 16B(78)-32) and was carried out after the fracturing of both of those wells. Data attached here includes raw and processed PLT logs from both wells, as well as technical reports summarizing the data collection and results.

Utah FORGE: Wells 16A(78)-32 and 16B(78)-32 Stimulation Pressure and Circulation Data April, 2024

This dataset consists of all of the pressure pumping data for Utah FORGE Well16A78-32 fracturing stages, Well 16B78-32 fracturing stages, and a 9-hour circulation test which took place after all of the frac plugs were drilled out. Fracturing in the wells took place in stages from April 3rd to April 17th, while the circulation test occurred on April 27th, 2024. Data is in excel files, with ReadMe files for each of the .zip folders that detail what data is available. Also attached here is wellhead pressure data from Pason that is referred to in the ReadMe files.

Grand Challenges and Opportunities in Stimulated Dynamic and Resonant Catalysis

Traditional heterogeneous catalysis is constrained by kinetic and thermodynamic limits, such as the Sabatier principle and reaction equilibrium. Dynamic and resonant catalysts hold promise to overcome these limitations by actively oscillating a catalyst’s physical or electronic structure at the time scale of the catalytic cycle, allowing programmable control over reaction pathways, and leading to improved rate and selectivity. External stimuli such as temperature swing, mechanical strain, electric charge, and light can perturb catalyst surfaces in different ways, altering adsorbate coverage, binding energies, and transition states beyond what steady-state catalysis allows. This work surveys the current state of dynamic catalysis, introduces the concept of “ stimulando ” characterization for observing transient dynamics, and outlines key modeling, mechanistic, and benchmarking strategies to advance the field toward improved chemical transformation.

Visualizing conical intersection passages via vibronic coherence maps generated by stimulated ultrafast X-ray Raman signals

Significance The capabilities of modern X-ray sources have substantially increased the temporal and spectral resolutions for the observation of elementary molecular events. Theoretically, it has been shown that these unique features can be exploited to probe vibronic coherences that emerge when molecules pass through conical intersections. Here, we demonstrate this technique for the photorelaxation of the RNA-nucleobase uracil after UV excitation. The generated coherence maps reveal the path of the nuclear wavepacket on the excited-state surface in the vicinity of the conical intersection. This information is directly accessible from the spectroscopically recorded signal. Being transferrable to other molecules, these coherence maps will provide detailed visualizations of other nonadiabatic passages in the future.

The possibility of anesthesia stimulated by a train of current pulses

This study considers a simple theoretical model of blocking the passage of signals (action potentials) from sensory neurons, thereby affecting anesthesia without the use of anesthetics as a result of a sequence of unipolar current pulses generated by an external source. The proposed model allows the selection of parameters and the required frequency of the repetition of current pulses for the possible implementation of anesthesia, depending on the electrical characteristics of the skin and the conductivity of the saline solution in which the myelinated nerve fibers are located.
