Multi-stage falling particle receivers

The present disclosure is directed to multi-stage falling particle receivers and methods of falling particle heating. As the particles fall through the receiver, the particles are periodically collected and released by flow retarding devices. The periodic catch-and-release of the particles falling through the receiver reduces particle flow dispersion, increases particle opacity and solar absorption, and reduces erosion and damage to surfaces caused by direct particle impingement.

Wavelength control and monitor for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) silicon photonic receiver

Techniques and circuitry for wavelength monitor and control are disclosed herein. The disclosed wavelength monitor and control circuitry and techniques are designed to realize a multi-channel DWDM optical link by using a photonic receiver that dynamically adjusts resonant wavelengths of the microring drop filter (MDF), as needed. The wavelength monitor and control circuitry can monitor and control the resonant wavelengths of multiple MDFs for a DWDM silicon photonics receiver with minimum power and area overhead. In an embodiment, circuitry for an optical receiver comprises an MDF having resonant wavelength for multiple DWDM channels, and circuitry to control and monitor the resonant wavelength of the MDF in real-time and in manner that compensates for deviation between actual resonant wavelength of the MDF and the incident optical wavelength of the MDF.

The design and test results of A Giga-Bit Cable Receiver (GBCR) for the ATLAS Inner Tracker Pixel Detector

This paper presents the design and test results of a Gigabit Cable Receiver ASIC called GBCR for the HL-LHC upgrade of the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) pixel detector. Three prototypes (GBCR1, GBCR2, and GBCR3) have been designed in the CERN-identified 65 nm CMOS technology. GBCR receives seven (GBCR2) or six (GBCR3) channels (RX) each at 1.28 Gbps from the front-end readout chip RD53B via flex cables up to 1 meter and Twinax cables up to 5 meters and sends the equalized and retimed signals to lpGBT. Both GBCR2 and GBCR3 ASICs have two transmitting channels (TX) that pre-emphasize the signals from lpGBT before sending them to RD53B through the same cables. No Single-Event Upset (SEU) is observed in any tested channels of GBCR2 in a 400 MeV proton beam. The extrapolated bit error rate for the future HL-LHC application is below 8*10^(-16), significantly below the specified BER criterion. GBCR3 is designed to improve the immunity to single-event-upset by applying the Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) technology to all RX channels. The retimed signals from GBCR3 have less total jitter than those from GBCR2 (35 ps versus 79 ps). Each receiver channel of GBCR3 consumes 75% more power than that of GBCR2.

Design and Performance of the SPT-SLIM Receiver Cryostat

The South Pole Telescope Shirokoff Line Intensity Mapper (SPT-SLIM) is a millimeter-wavelength line-intensity mapping experiment, which was deployed on the South Pole Telescope (SPT) during the 2024-2025 Austral summer season. This pathfinder experiment serves to demonstrate the on-sky operation of multi-pixel on-chip spectrometer technology. We report on the cryogenic performance of the SPT-SLIM receiver for the first year of commissioning observations. The SPT-SLIM receiver utilizes an Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator (ADR) for cooling the focal plane of superconducting filterbank spectrometers to a temperature of 150 mK. We demonstrate stable thermal performance of the focal plane module during observations consistent with thermal modeling, enabling a cryogenic operating efficiency above 80%. We also report on the receiver control system design utilizing the Observatory Control System (OCS) platform for automated cryogenic operation on the SPT.

Evaluation of Additively Manufactured Monolithic SiC and SiC Ceramic Matrix Composites for Concentrating Solar Receiver Applications

Supported by an award from the Solar Technology Office, US Department of Energy, GE Aerospace Research in collaboration with Heliogen Holdings Inc, is engaged in the development of ultra-High Operating Temperature SiC-matrix Solar Thermal Air Receiver (HOTSSTAR). We report the results of our study of the effective heat transfer characteristic of several candidate structure motifs, or feature geometries, made of SiC via additive manufacturing in a simulative laboratory test. The SiC structure motifs studied include different permutations of three-dimensional periodic lattices and defined shapes. The solar-thermal simulating laboratory test setup is constructed using a 4kW CO2 laser system with beam shaping optics to apply radiative heating power on one face of 2”-diameter cylindrical feature specimens representing the structure motifs of interest for receiver element design. Using the test setup, simulative test conditions representative of a concentrated solar flux of up to ~2000 suns could be achieved in the lab tests under varying air flow through the test structure. A numerical analysis scheme is developed to extract an effective or compound heat transfer coefficient representative of the test structure under steady-state heat flow conditions.

A Proof for the Unbiased Nature of Range-Doppler Measurements in Coarse-Resolution Dechirp-on-Receive Feedback Synthetic Aperture Radar Navigation

In feedback synthetic aperture radar (SAR) navigation, observables extracted from SAR range-Doppler images correct position and velocity errors accumulated within an associated navigation system. Unlike most other sensors, which produce measurements without input from a navigation system, SARs require a prior estimate of the radar’s position and velocity to adjust the radar’s matched filter during range-Doppler image formation. Consequently, it is possible for position and velocity errors within a navigation system to manifest as additional errors (biases) in the range-Doppler measurement observables. Prior work has not tackled this possibility in the context of feedback SAR navigation with a dechirp-on-receive radar. This paper offers a proof demonstrating that range-Doppler observables extracted from coarse-resolution vertical SAR images formed with a dechirp-on-receive radar may be safely modeled as unbiased measurements of the radar’s true position and velocity despite the presence of moderate navigation errors.

Coupled receiver-decoders for low rate turbo codes

We present a rate 1/31 turbo code that achieves a bit error rate of 10(sup -6) at Eb/No = -0.9 db. At this coding gain, insufficient energy per symbol is present for a conventional receiver to recover the carrier phase properly. We present a method to overcome this problem by coupling the receiver and decoder functions.

Performance Evaluation of Large Aperture 'Polished Panel' Optical Receivers Based on Experimental Data

Recent interest in hybrid RF/Optical communications has led to the development and installation of a "polished-panel" optical receiver evaluation assembly on the 34-meter research antenna at Deep-Space Station 13 (DSS-13) at NASA's Goldstone Communications Complex. The test setup consists of a custom aluminum panel polished to optical smoothness, and a large-sensor CCD camera designed to image the point-spread function (PSF) generated by the polished aluminum panel. Extensive data has been obtained via realtime tracking and imaging of planets and stars at DSS-13. Both "on-source" and "off-source" data were recorded at various elevations, enabling the development of realistic simulations and analytic models to help determine the performance of future deep-space communications systems operating with on-off keying (OOK) or pulse-position-modulated (PPM) signaling formats with photon-counting detection, and compared with the ultimate quantum bound on detection performance for these modulations. Experimentally determined PSFs were scaled to provide realistic signal-distributions across a photon-counting detector array when a pulse is received, and uncoded as well as block-coded performance analyzed and evaluated for a well-known class of block codes.

Qualitative and quantitative profiles of jejunal oligosaccharides and cecal short–chain fatty acids in broiler chickens receiving different dietary levels of fiber, protein and exogenous enzymes

Dietary supplemental carbohydrases are able to degrade non-starch polysaccharides and generate oligosaccharides in the gastrointestinal tract. This study was conducted to investigate the influence of dietary fiber and protein levels on growth performance, nutrient utilization, digesta oligosaccharides profile and cecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) profile in broilers receiving diets supplemented with xylanase or protease individually or in combination. Enzyme supplementation had no effect on growth performance. There was significant (P < 0.05) fiber × protein × xylanase interaction for ileal nitrogen digestibility and significant (P < 0.01) protein × xylanase × protease interaction for nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy. Birds fed high-fiber diets had higher (P < 0.05) jejunal oligosaccharides and cecal SCFA concentrations. Xylanase and protease combination produced the greatest pentose (Pent) levels in low fiber–adequate protein diets but lowest levels in highfiber–low protein diets. There was significant (P < 0.05) fiber × xylanase × protease interaction explained by the digesta concentrations of (Pent) 3 , (Pent) 4 and (Pent) 5 being greatest (P < 0.5) in protease-only supplemented high-fiber diets but lowest in protease-only supplemented low-fiber diets. Furthermore, these results suggest that, of all the factors investigated, dietary fiber level had the greatest effect on modulating digesta concentration of oligosaccharides and cecal SCFA. Evidence points to the fact that there is considerable capacity for generating pentose oligosaccharides in the digestive tract of broilers receiving diets rich in fibrous feedstuffs, and that this may have a beneficial effect on microbial profile in the digestive tract.

Characterization of Aliased Noise in the Advanced ACTPol Receiver

Advanced ACTPol is the second-generation polarization-sensitive upgrade to the 6m aperture Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), which increased detector count and frequency coverage compared to the previous ACTPol receiver. Advanced ACTPol utilizes a new two-stage time-division multiplexing readout architecture based on superconducting quantum interference devices to achieve a multiplexing factor as high as 64 (rows), fielding a 2012 detector camera at 150/220 GHz and two 90/150 GHz cameras containing 1716 detectors each. In a time-domain system, aliasing introduces noise to the readout. Here in this work we present a figure of merit to measure this noise contribution and present measurements of the aliased noise fraction of the Advanced ACTPol receiver as deployed.
