Automated Rendezvous and Capture in Space: A Technology Assessment

This paper presents the results of a study to assess the technology of automated rendezvous and capture (AR&C) in space. The outline of the paper is as follows: First, the history of manual and automated rendezvous and capture and rendezvous and dock is presented. Next, the need for AR&C in space is reviewed. In light of these, AR&C systems are proposed that meet NASA's future needs, but can be developed in a reasonable amount of time with a reasonable amount of money. Technology plans for developing these systems are presented; cost and schedule are included.

Shield Fields Within the Nemesis Tessera Quadrangle, Venus

Here we study small edifice concentrations in parts of Nemesis Tessera to quantify their spatial distribution and density. Does this affect shield field size, and do specific density values characterize different tectonic settings? Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Geometric Properties of Possible Volcanoes in the South Polar Region, Mars

In 1987 Tanaka and Scott mapped the south polar region of Mars using Viking Orbiter data and identified several features as volcanoes, probable volcanoes of uncertain origin, or mountains of uncertain origin. Several workers have since studied these features using Mars Orbiter Laser Altimetry (MOLA) data. In the north polar region of Mars volcanic edifices have been identified that have surrounding annular depressions, perhaps formed when magma chamber heat melted surrounding ground ice causing surface subsidence. Our objective is to use Martian south polar volcanoes as indicators of magma-ground ice interactions and as indicators of regional eruptive styles. In this study we use high resolution MOLA data to characterize the geometric parameters of mapped volcanoes and mountains and systematically search for any unidentified volcanic edifices from latitude 55 S to the South Pole.

Use of Soft Computing Technologies For Rocket Engine Control

The problem to be addressed in this paper is to explore how the use of Soft Computing Technologies (SCT) could be employed to further improve overall engine system reliability and performance. Specifically, this will be presented by enhancing rocket engine control and engine health management (EHM) using SCT coupled with conventional control technologies, and sound software engineering practices used in Marshall s Flight Software Group. The principle goals are to improve software management, software development time and maintenance, processor execution, fault tolerance and mitigation, and nonlinear control in power level transitions. The intent is not to discuss any shortcomings of existing engine control and EHM methodologies, but to provide alternative design choices for control, EHM, implementation, performance, and sustaining engineering. The approaches outlined in this paper will require knowledge in the fields of rocket engine propulsion, software engineering for embedded systems, and soft computing technologies (i.e., neural networks, fuzzy logic, and Bayesian belief networks), much of which is presented in this paper. The first targeted demonstration rocket engine platform is the MC-1 (formerly FASTRAC Engine) which is simulated with hardware and software in the Marshall Avionics & Software Testbed laboratory that

Autonomous Component Health Management with Failed Component Detection, Identification, and Avoidance

This paper details a novel scheme for autonomous component health management (ACHM) with failed actuator detection and failed sensor detection, identification, and avoidance. This new scheme has features that far exceed the performance of systems with triple-redundant sensing and voting, yet requires fewer sensors and could be applied to any system with redundant sensing. Relevant background to the ACHM scheme is provided, and the simulation results for the application of that scheme to a single-axis spacecraft attitude control system with a 3rd order plant and dual-redundant measurement of system states are presented. ACHM fulfills key functions needed by an integrated vehicle health monitoring (IVHM) system. It is: autonomous; adaptive; works in realtime; provides optimal state estimation; identifies failed components; avoids failed components; reconfigures for multiple failures; reconfigures for intermittent failures; works for hard-over, soft, and zero-output failures; and works for both open- and closed-loop systems. The ACHM scheme combines a prefilter that generates preliminary state estimates, detects and identifies failed sensors and actuators, and avoids the use of failed sensors in state estimation with a fixed-gain Kalman filter that generates optimal state estimates and provides model-based state estimates that comprise an integral part of the failure detection logic. The results show that ACHM successfully isolates multiple persistent and intermittent hard-over, soft, and zero-output failures. It is now ready to be tested on a computer model of an actual system.

Athena in 2013 and Beyond

TRISA, the U.S. Army TRADOC G2 Intelligence Support Activity, received Athena 1 in 2009. They first used Athena 3 to support studies in 2011. This paper describes Athena 4, which they started using in October 2012. A final section discusses issues that are being considered for incorporation into Athena 5 and later. Athena's objective is to help skilled intelligence analysts anticipate the likely consequences of complex courses of action that use our country's entire power base, not just our military capabilities, for operations in troubled regions of the world. Measures of effectiveness emphasize who is in control and the effects of our actions on the attitudes and well being of civilians. The planning horizon encompasses not weeks or months, but years.Athena is a scalable, laptop-based simulation with weekly resolution. Up to three months of simulated time can pass between game turns that require user interaction. Athena's geographic scope is nominally a country, but can be a region within a county. Geographic resolution is "neighborhoods", which are defined by the user and may be actual neighborhoods, provinces, or anything in between. Models encompass phenomena whose effects are expected to be relevant over a medium-term planning horizon--three months to three years. The scope and intrinsic complexity of the problem dictate a spiral development process. That is, the model is used during development and lessons learned are used to improve the model. Even more important is that while every version must consider the "big picture" at some level of detail, development priority is given to those issues that are most relevant to currently anticipated studies. For example, models of the delivery and effectiveness of information operations messaging were among the additions in Athena 4.
